- First Blood (1982)
- Rambo: First Blood Part II (1985)
- Rambo III (1988)
- Rambo (2008)
- Rambo: Last Blood (2019)
This is the complete order for the five released films in the main series. There is no separate chronological order that improves on it for a first viewing: the films refer to Rambo’s past, but the franchise was made and released in this sequence.
Why release order is the best choice
The first film establishes who John Rambo is, what happened to him during and after the Vietnam War, and why his military training becomes central to the story. The sequels then expand the character and change the scale of the action.

#1 Best Overall
- When the daughter of one of his friends is kidnapped, Rambo- who has been working on a ranch- crosses the U.S.-Mexico border and quickly finds himself up against the full might of one of Mexico's most violent cartels.
First Blood is primarily a tense survival and manhunt thriller. First Blood Part II turns the series into a more conventional military-action franchise, while Rambo III continues that larger geopolitical approach. The 2008 film revives the character after a long gap, and Last Blood serves as the current endpoint of the released five-film run.
1. First Blood (1982)
Release date: October 22, 1982, in the United States
First Blood introduces John Rambo, played by Sylvester Stallone. Rambo is a Vietnam veteran traveling through the Pacific Northwest when a confrontation with local law enforcement escalates after he is arrested for vagrancy.
Richard Crenna plays Colonel Sam Trautman, Rambo’s former commanding officer and one of the few people who understands the veteran’s abilities and psychological state. Unlike the later films, the original is not built mainly around battlefield spectacle. It is a tightly focused survival story about trauma, alienation, authority, and the consequences of treating a trained soldier as a public threat.
Start here even if you already know Rambo as an action icon. The film’s quieter, more grounded tone is the foundation for everything that follows.
Rank #2
- John Rambo, a former member of the Green Berets, is pursued in the mountains by a tyrannical sheriff and his subordinates, forcing him to survive using his combat skills.
2. Rambo: First Blood Part II (1985)
Release date: May 22, 1985, in the United States
In the first sequel, a government mission sends Rambo back to Vietnam to investigate a suspected prisoner-of-war camp. Stallone returns as Rambo, with Crenna reprising the role of Trautman.
The subtitle is officially written as First Blood Part II, although the film is also commonly referred to as Rambo II. It is important to watch it after the original because its mission and Rambo’s return to Vietnam build directly on the character introduced in First Blood.
This is the point at which the franchise becomes a full-scale military-action series. The setting grows, the mission becomes more overtly combat-driven, and Rambo’s skills move from defensive survival to offensive warfare.

Release date: May 25, 1988, in the United States
Rambo III is the third released film and again stars Stallone as John Rambo and Crenna as Colonel Trautman. The story shifts away from Vietnam and places Rambo in a new international conflict.
The change in geopolitical setting does not mean the film should be moved elsewhere in the order. Watch it after First Blood Part II, exactly as audiences did when the series was released. Its relationship with Trautman and its continuing focus on Rambo’s military past make more sense when viewed as the next chapter in release order.
4. Rambo (2008)
Release date: 2008
The fourth film is titled simply Rambo. In a watch guide, adding “(2008)” is useful because it distinguishes the movie from the character, the franchise as a whole, and search results for unrelated uses of the name.
Made roughly two decades after Rambo III, this film revives the series rather than functioning as a remake of First Blood. Its position is straightforward: it is the fourth released entry and belongs after the three original films.

For viewers comparing the movies, Rambo continues the franchise’s later, more combat-focused direction while presenting Rambo as an older man shaped by the violence he has survived. It is best experienced after seeing the earlier films, since the character’s history carries more weight at this point in the series.
5. Rambo: Last Blood (2019)
Release date: 2019
Rambo: Last Blood is the fifth released film and the latest available entry in the main series. It follows the four earlier movies and should remain at the end of any current watch-through.
The title presents the movie as a final or last chapter in the existing series, but it is more precise to call it the current endpoint of the released films. A future project titled John Rambo has been listed by Lionsgate Publicity with a scheduled U.S. release date of June 4, 2027; that date and the project itself may change. It should not be inserted into the order until it is actually released.
Is there a chronological story order?
Not one that is more useful than release order. Rambo’s backstory includes his military service and experiences before the events of the films, but those details do not create a clean alternate sequence for the released movies.
Reordering the films based on references to Rambo’s past would make a first viewing more complicated without providing a clearer narrative. Use this sequence instead:
| Watch | Film | What it contributes |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | First Blood (1982) | Introduces Rambo and establishes the survival-thriller tone. |
| 2 | Rambo: First Blood Part II (1985) | Returns Rambo to Vietnam and expands the scale into military action. |
| 3 | Rambo III (1988) | Continues the action series in a new international setting. |
| 4 | Rambo (2008) | Revives the character after the long gap following the original trilogy. |
| 5 | Rambo: Last Blood (2019) | Acts as the current endpoint of the released five-film run. |
Want all five movies in one set?
If you want to watch the entire series without switching between digital storefronts, look for a Rambo 5-film 4K UHD collection or an equivalent complete Blu-ray set. Physical editions can be useful for a franchise watch-through because streaming rights vary by title, country, service, and date. Check the listed format and region before buying, since collection contents and availability can differ between editions.

Recheck each movie at publication time—or before starting your marathon—rather than assuming that one service carries the whole franchise.
What comes after Last Blood?
Lionsgate Publicity currently lists John Rambo as a future project with a June 4, 2027 release date. Treat that as a scheduled date subject to change, not as a sixth released movie. For now, the correct released-film order ends with Rambo: Last Blood (2019).
Frequently Asked Questions

Watch the films in release order: First Blood (1982), Rambo: First Blood Part II (1985), Rambo III (1988), Rambo (2008), and Rambo: Last Blood (2019).
Should I watch the Rambo movies in chronological story order?
No. The released films contain references to Rambo’s earlier life, but those references do not create a superior alternate sequence. Release order is the clearest choice for a first viewing.
Is Rambo: Last Blood the final Rambo movie?
The fifth released film is Rambo: Last Blood (2019). A future project titled John Rambo has been listed with a scheduled June 4, 2027 release date, but it is not yet part of the released-film order and the date is subject to change.
Where can I stream the Rambo movies?
Availability varies by country, title, service, and date. In the United States, check JustWatch immediately before viewing to compare streaming, ad-supported, rental, purchase, and physical-disc options.
The Bottom Line
The answer is simple: watch First Blood, Rambo: First Blood Part II, Rambo III, Rambo (2008), and Rambo: Last Blood in release order. The future project John Rambo is not part of the current watch order until it is released.
