That does not mean every page visit automatically infects a device. It does mean the risks are difficult to control: unofficial streaming sites can expose visitors to malicious advertising, aggressive redirects, fake download prompts, phishing pages, unwanted applications, credential theft, and malware. The safer choice is to watch through a licensed anime service or official digital storefront.
What happened to 9anime?
9anime was an unauthorized anime-streaming brand. Its operators announced a rebrand to AniWave in August 2023, reportedly citing legal pressure and domain blocking. Reports at the time also warned that fake 9anime clones were circulating and could attempt to steal users’ information.

AniWave—formerly 9anime—shut down in August 2024. Its farewell message pointed users toward legal paid alternatives. That history is important because old bookmarks, search results, social-media posts, and copied “official” links can remain online long after a service has disappeared.
A familiar name, logo, domain spelling, or video-player design does not prove that a current site is operated by the former service. In this case, the brand itself is especially easy for unrelated operators to imitate.
Why unofficial streaming sites can be dangerous
Malvertising, pop-ups, and redirects
Unauthorized streaming ecosystems commonly rely on advertising and third-party scripts that are outside the control of the person watching the video. A malicious advertisement can open a new tab, redirect the browser to a phishing page, or display a fake security warning.
Be particularly cautious if a page:
- opens several tabs as soon as you click the player;
- redirects you repeatedly or prevents you from returning to the video;
- claims that your computer, browser, or video player needs an urgent update;
- shows a phone number and tells you to call technical support;
- asks for payment details before ordinary playback; or
- insists that you enable notifications before you can watch.
Close the tab instead of interacting with the warning. Do not call a number displayed in a pop-up and do not grant a stranger remote access to your computer.

Fake CAPTCHA instructions
Some deceptive pages use a fake CAPTCHA or “human verification” screen. A real CAPTCHA may ask you to identify images, type displayed characters, or complete a similar web-based challenge. It should not tell you to press keyboard shortcuts, open Terminal or PowerShell, paste text, or run a command.
Rank #2
Those instructions can cause you to execute hidden malware. If a CAPTCHA asks you to copy and paste anything into a command window, stop immediately and close the page.
Fake downloads, extensions, and updates
You should not install an APK, executable, browser extension, codec, “special player,” or security update offered by an unofficial streaming page. A download button beside a video is not evidence that the file is genuine.
Do not let a page persuade you that playback requires software outside your normal browser. Download applications only from a source you independently trust, such as the developer’s verified website or your device platform’s official store. Avoid pirated-content downloads altogether: they provide an especially convenient way to distribute malware and unwanted software.
Phishing, tracking, and privacy exposure
A clone can be designed to collect more than viewing information. It may imitate a sign-in page, request an email address and password, or ask for payment details. Even when a page is not actively phishing, advertising scripts, cookies, and tracking pixels can record browsing activity and share information with third parties.
An ad blocker can reduce some pop-ups and nuisance advertising, but it is not a malware guarantee. It does not make an untrusted site legitimate, and it may not detect every malicious script or infected download.

Does HTTPS or the padlock make 9anime safe?
No. HTTPS encrypts the connection between your browser and the website. It does not establish that the operator is legitimate, that the anime is licensed, that advertisements are safe, that redirects are harmless, or that a download is clean.
Likewise, a clean result from a site-status or reputation checker is not a complete trust or legality certification. Security services can identify some known dangerous domains and files, but newly created clones, compromised advertising networks, and deceptive pages may not yet be known to them.

If you only opened a page and did not download anything, enter credentials, approve notifications, or follow a suspicious instruction, the immediate risk is lower. Close the tabs, remove any notification permission you granted, and continue with the checks below if anything seems unusual.
If you clicked a pop-up or were redirected
- Close the suspicious tab or browser window. Do not click “scan,” “fix,” “update,” or “call support.”
- Review your browser’s notification permissions and remove any unfamiliar site.
- Check installed browser extensions and uninstall anything you do not recognize.
- Update your operating system, browser, and security software through their normal settings—not through a pop-up.
- Run a scan with reputable, up-to-date security software.
If you downloaded or ran a file
Stop using the downloaded program and do not open it again. Disconnect the device from the internet if you suspect it is actively behaving maliciously, then run a full security scan using trusted software. If the computer shows persistent redirects, disabled security tools, unknown accounts, encryption demands, or other serious symptoms, seek help from a qualified technician or your organization’s IT team.
On Windows, a supplementary diagnostic or privacy tool such as Outbyte PC Repair may help identify potentially unwanted applications and some known malware, but it should not be treated as a guarantee of cleanup or as a replacement for antivirus software. Use it only as part of a broader recovery process after updating and running reputable security protection.
If you entered a password or payment information
- Use a different, clean device if possible.
- Change the exposed password immediately, beginning with any account where you reused it.
- Turn on two-factor authentication where the service supports it.
- Contact your bank or card issuer if payment details were entered.
- Review account activity for unfamiliar sign-ins, purchases, password-reset messages, or newly added recovery methods.
Do not wait for a confirmed loss before changing a reused password. A phishing page does not need to infect your computer to compromise an account.

Should you use a VPN or antivirus with 9anime?
A VPN can encrypt traffic between your device and the VPN provider, and antivirus software can detect some malicious files. Neither tool makes an unverified streaming site trustworthy. A VPN does not prevent phishing, malicious browser scripts, fake CAPTCHA commands, unsafe downloads, or stolen passwords. Antivirus tools also cannot guarantee that every newly distributed threat will be detected.
These tools are useful parts of general security hygiene, but “use a VPN and antivirus and you are safe” is not a sound conclusion. The underlying problem is the site’s uncertain operator, advertising ecosystem, content authorization, and download risk.
Where can you watch anime instead?
Choose a licensed anime service, an official digital storefront, or another provider that clearly identifies its operator, terms, catalog availability, and payment process. Availability differs by country and can change when licensing agreements expire, so check the service directly for the anime you want to watch.
A licensed service is not automatically perfect—outages, ads, price changes, and regional restrictions can still occur—but it avoids the central trust problem presented by a 9anime clone. Do not follow links claiming to be a new “official” replacement unless you independently verify the provider.
What not to do
- Do not search for or share active 9anime or AniWave clone domains.
- Do not follow instructions to bypass domain blocks or access pirated streams.
- Do not install a player, APK, codec, extension, or “browser update” supplied by a streaming page.
- Do not grant notification, camera, microphone, remote-access, or screen-sharing permissions merely to watch video.
- Do not enter an email password, payment card, or recovery code into a page reached through an unexpected redirect.
- Do not mistake HTTPS, a padlock, a clean search result, or an ad blocker for proof of safety.
If the goal is simply to continue watching anime, the safer route is legal anime streaming through a currently operating, licensed provider—not a new domain using an old brand.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is 9anime still safe to use?
No. The original 9anime service rebranded as AniWave in August 2023, and AniWave shut down in August 2024. A current site using the 9anime name may be an unrelated clone or impersonator.
Does the 9anime padlock or HTTPS mean the site is safe?
HTTPS only encrypts the connection. It does not prove that the site operator is legitimate, that advertisements and redirects are safe, that the anime is licensed, or that downloads are malware-free.
What should I do if I visited 9anime or clicked a suspicious pop-up?
Close the page, remove unfamiliar browser notification permissions and extensions, update your operating system and security software, and run a reputable full scan. If you entered passwords or payment details, change them from a clean device and contact your bank if necessary.

Use a currently operating licensed anime streaming provider or an official digital storefront. Availability and catalogs vary by country, so verify the provider and title directly.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Avoid 9anime-branded sites. The original service became AniWave in August 2023 and AniWave shut down in August 2024, so current 9anime domains may be clones or impersonators. If you already downloaded a file, update your security tools and run a scan; if you entered credentials or payment details, change passwords and contact your financial institution. For viewing, use a licensed anime service or official storefront.
