For U.S. subscribers, October 2024 was Max’s Halloween month. The service’s No Sleep October campaign paired new horror and thriller premieres—including Salem’s Lot, Caddo Lake, MaXXXine, and Trap—with a large October 1 catalog refresh. The month also brought HBO’s superhero-movie satire The Franchise, the final season of Somebody Somewhere, and several documentaries and unscripted series.
This is a historical guide to the announced U.S. October 2024 release calendar, not a claim about what remains available on Max today. Licensed titles can leave the service, and availability varies by country.

Best new horror and thrillers
Salem’s Lot — October 3
Max opened its October horror push with Salem’s Lot, a Max Original feature adaptation of Stephen King’s 1975 vampire novel. Gary Dauberman wrote, directed, and executive-produced the film. The story follows author Ben Mears as he returns to Jerusalem’s Lot and discovers that vampires are preying on the town. Warner Bros. Discovery confirmed the October 3 Max debut in its official announcement.

We will provide professional service and a satisfactory solution for you.
It was the month’s clearest headline horror premiere and the natural starting point for a Stephen King-themed double feature with It, It: Chapter Two, Doctor Sleep, or the October 1 arrival A Return to Salem’s Lot.
Caddo Lake — October 10
This Max Original thriller begins with the disappearance of an eight-year-old girl. Earlier deaths and disappearances gradually connect to the history of a fractured family, turning the film into a mystery that is more concerned with buried relationships and an unsettling chain of events than with a straightforward monster story. M. Night Shyamalan produced the film.
Caddo Lake is the strongest choice for viewers who want suspense and a puzzle-box mystery rather than a conventional Halloween slasher.

A24’s MaXXXine stars Mia Goth as Maxine Minx, an adult-film performer trying to break into mainstream acting in 1980s Hollywood while a killer targets actresses. It is the third film in Ti West’s X trilogy, following X and Pearl. Viewers unfamiliar with the earlier films can still identify its central character, but watching the trilogy in order gives Maxine’s story more context.
Among the month’s major films, this was the most overtly tied to the traditions of exploitation cinema, Hollywood horror, and the slasher genre.
Trap — October 25
In Trap, a father takes his daughter to a pop concert and realizes that the event is actually a police operation designed to catch a serial killer hiding in the audience. The premise turns a crowded concert into a pressure cooker: the central problem is not simply escaping a threat, but figuring out how to move through a heavily monitored public event without exposing yourself.
It was the late-month choice for viewers who wanted a contemporary thriller rather than a supernatural horror film.

Best new comedy
The Franchise season 1 — October 6
The Franchise is an HBO Original comedy from Sam Mendes, Armando Iannucci, and Jon Brown. Its eight-episode first season follows the crew of an unpopular superhero franchise movie as they try to survive the demands, politics, and absurdity of blockbuster production.
The show is aimed at viewers who enjoy workplace comedy with a Hollywood-industry setting. Its target is not superhero storytelling itself so much as the machinery around a franchise: production crises, creative compromises, corporate pressure, and the scramble to keep an expensive film moving.
Somebody Somewhere season 3 — October 27
The third season of HBO’s Somebody Somewhere stars Bridget Everett and Jeff Hiller. It was also the show’s final season, making the October 27 premiere a concluding chapter rather than the start of another long-running run.
If you prefer character-driven comedy to broad genre satire, this was the month’s most important series return. Start with the earlier seasons if you have not yet met Sam and the people around her.

Louder: The Soundtrack of Change — October 17
This Max Original documentary, produced by Selena Gomez and Stacey Abrams, focuses on women musicians, their activism, and the relationship between music and social change. It is the clearest documentary recommendation for viewers interested in the cultural and political role of popular music rather than a conventional crime story.
I Am Not a Monster: The Lois Riess Murders — October 15
This two-part HBO documentary examines the case of Lois Riess, who killed her husband in 2018, fled authorities, and later discussed the case with filmmakers. Its two-part structure makes it a relatively contained true-crime watch for viewers who want a documentary series that can be completed in one sitting.
Other nonfiction arrivals
The October schedule also included Breath of Fire on October 23, Chris Brown: A History of Violence on October 27, and a wide selection of Discovery, TLC, HGTV, Food Network, and other unscripted programming. The latter included new seasons of 1000-lb Sisters, Bering Sea Gold, Impractical Jokers, People Magazine Investigates, and Paranormal Caught on Camera.
Best family and lighter Halloween picks
Gremlins: The Wild Batch season 2 — October 3
The second season of the animated Gremlins series arrived on October 3. It was one of the month’s more accessible Halloween options for viewers who want spooky creatures without committing to the harder-edged horror films in the lineup.

Barney’s World season 1 — October 14
Barney’s World season 1 premiered on October 14. This was the month’s clearest preschool-oriented addition and a better fit for very young viewers than the horror-heavy October catalog.

October 1 family and fantasy additions
The large October 1 refresh included Scooby-Doo, Tim Burton’s Corpse Bride, Gremlins, Gremlins 2: The New Batch, Practical Magic, Water for Elephants, Monte Carlo, and The Huntsman: Winter’s War. These titles made it possible to build a family-friendly or lightly spooky marathon without relying only on new premieres.
The No Sleep October horror collection
Max positioned October 2024 around its No Sleep October campaign. The promotion combined new exclusives with catalog horror, including The Exorcist, Evil Dead Rise, Malignant, Poltergeist, Hereditary, The Witch, Coraline, and the A Nightmare on Elm Street franchise. The campaign details and featured titles were outlined by Warner Bros. Discovery.
The October 1 additions supported several practical watchlists:
- Freddy marathon: A Nightmare on Elm Street, A Nightmare on Elm Street 2: Freddy’s Revenge, A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors, A Nightmare on Elm Street 4: The Dream Master, A Nightmare on Elm Street 5: The Dream Child, and Freddy vs. Jason.
- Conjuring universe night: Annabelle: Creation, Annabelle Comes Home, The Conjuring, The Conjuring 2, and The Curse of La Llorona.
- Gremlins double feature: Gremlins and Gremlins 2: The New Batch, followed by Gremlins: The Wild Batch season 2.
- Stephen King collection: It, It: Chapter Two, Doctor Sleep, A Return to Salem’s Lot, and the new Salem’s Lot.
- Classic versus modern horror: pair Poltergeist or A Nightmare on Elm Street with The Conjuring, It, Doctor Sleep, or Salem’s Lot.
These were catalog additions and promotional groupings, not all-new Max productions. That distinction matters: Max’s October identity came from the combination of new releases and a temporary-looking library refresh, not from a slate made entirely of Max Originals.

International, reality, and genre additions
Not every October arrival was a U.S.-made Max or HBO production. The schedule mixed HBO and Max Originals with licensed films and series, Discovery programming, HGTV, TLC, Food Network, international titles, and other Warner Bros. Discovery brands.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →The Confidante was notable as the first French Max Original limited series. The four-part psychological thriller was inspired by true events connected to the 2015 Bataclan terrorist attack, with new episodes scheduled weekly. The international slate also included Polish crime series Angel of Death (Szadź) and The Disappearance (Chyłka – Zaginięcie), as well as the Spanish-language La Mente del Poder and Las Bravas F.C. season 2.
For unscripted viewers, the month offered everything from the roller-skating competition Roller Jam to home and property series such as House Hunters: Amazing Water Homes, Bargain Block New Orleans, My Lottery Dream Home, Vacation House Rules, and First-Time Buyer’s Club. Food and competition programming included Kids Baking Championship: Scary Good and Supermarket Stakeout season 6.
Sports and live programming
Max’s broader October 2024 calendar also included Bleacher Report live sports. Listings included NHL and NBA games, Mountain West college football, U.S. men’s and women’s national soccer matches, MotoGP events, and cycling coverage. These live events were part of the wider Max programming schedule, but they were separate from the movie-and-series premieres listed above and could depend on the relevant sports access and U.S. availability.
How to choose what to watch
- For classic Halloween: Start with the October 1 A Nightmare on Elm Street additions, then move to Salem’s Lot on October 3.
- For modern horror: Choose MaXXXine on October 18, with Hereditary, The Witch, or Evil Dead Rise from the horror collection.
- For a mystery without traditional monster horror: Watch Caddo Lake on October 10.
- For a high-concept thriller: Save Trap for October 25.
- For comedy: Try The Franchise for Hollywood satire or the final season of Somebody Somewhere for a warmer character comedy.
- For documentaries: Pick I Am Not a Monster: The Lois Riess Murders for true crime, Louder: The Soundtrack of Change for music and activism, or Breath of Fire for another nonfiction option.
- For family viewing: Use Barney’s World, Gremlins: The Wild Batch, Scooby-Doo, Coraline, or Tim Burton’s Corpse Bride, depending on the age and scare tolerance of the audience.
