How to Watch Every V/H/S Movie in Order: Release Date and Approximate Chronology

The best way to watch the V/H/S franchise is release order, but a useful approximate chronology begins with V/H/S/85 and ends with V/H/S/Halloween. Here is the complete eight-film sequence, optional spin-offs, and U.S. availability guidance.

For a first watch, use release order: V/H/S (2012), V/H/S/2 (2013), V/H/S: Viral (2014), V/H/S/94 (2021), V/H/S/99 (2022), V/H/S/85 (2023), V/H/S/Beyond (2024), and V/H/S/Halloween (2025).

The franchise is an anthology rather than one tightly serialized story, so release order best preserves its changing formats, filmmakers, framing devices, and progression from analog found footage to period horror and science-fiction anthology filmmaking. A chronological route is possible, but it should be treated as an approximate order by the era depicted, not a definitive timeline shared by every tape.

The V/H/S movies in release order

Release order is the most useful sequence for newcomers and completionists. It follows the franchise’s actual development and avoids treating loosely connected segments as if they belonged to one fully documented continuity.

  1. V/H/S (2012)

The original film establishes the central premise: criminals enter an abandoned house looking for a particular videotape and discover a disturbing collection of recordings. The result is a feature-length anthology linked by a framing story and the physical mystery of the tapes. Shudder’s catalog identifies it as a 2012 film.

Start here even if you are primarily interested in the later period entries. The first movie introduces the franchise’s basic rules, visual language, and tape-within-a-film structure.

  2. V/H/S/2 (2013)

The sequel expands the anthology format with new tapes and a connected framing narrative. It is the natural follow-up to the original because it develops the series’ mythology and demonstrates how much variety the format can support.

Its segments are largely self-contained, but watching it directly after V/H/S makes the recurring anthology mechanics easier to appreciate.

  3. V/H/S: Viral (2014)

The third film moves the framing concept toward the internet age: disturbing videos begin spreading online. Its principal segments include Dante the Great, Parallel Monsters, and Bonestorm.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Viral is less dependent on the previous films’ individual stories than a conventional sequel would be, but it works best as the conclusion of the original trilogy’s contemporary-era run.

  4. V/H/S/94 (2021)

This revival is explicitly set in 1994. Its framing story follows a SWAT raid on a warehouse that uncovers a cult-related VHS conspiracy. The period setting returns the franchise to its tape-centered roots while giving the anthology a strongly defined early-1990s atmosphere.

Although it was released seven years after Viral, it belongs fourth in release order.

  5. V/H/S/99 (2022)

Set during the final analog years of the 1990s, this entry is built around the anxiety and technology of 1999, just before the millennium transition. Its principal segments are Shredding, Suicide Bid, Ozzy’s Dungeon, The Gawkers, and To Hell and Back.

Shudder describes the film as beginning with a teenager’s home video and leading to horrifying revelations. It is a period anthology, but it follows V/H/S/94 in release order because it arrived one year later.

  6. V/H/S/85 (2023)

This anthology travels back to 1985. Its framing device involves a taped-over made-for-television documentary, which introduces five tales of terror rooted in the look and technology of the 1980s.

    • Number of discs: 1

V/H/S/85 is therefore earlier than V/H/S/94 in story-era order, but it should remain sixth for a release-order marathon.

  7. V/H/S/Beyond (2024)

V/H/S/Beyond makes science fiction the dominant connective idea. Shudder describes it as six new tapes set against a science-fiction-inspired hellscape. Unlike V/H/S/85, V/H/S/94, and V/H/S/99, it does not establish one simple historical year for the anthology as a whole.

The film premiered at Fantastic Fest on September 20, 2024, and arrived on Shudder on October 4, 2024. It is the seventh released main-series entry.

  8. V/H/S/Halloween (2025)

The eighth released main-series anthology is organized around Halloween rather than a numbered historical year. Its six segments are Diet Phantasma, Fun Size, Home Haunt, Kidprint, Ut Supra Sic Infra, and Coochie Coochie Coo.

V/H/S/Halloween premiered at Fantastic Fest on September 19, 2025, and was released on Shudder on October 3, 2025. It is the latest released entry covered here, but it should not be described as the definitive final film unless a future official announcement confirms that status.

V/H/S movies in approximate chronological order

If you want to move through the eras depicted on screen rather than the years in which the movies were made, use this sequence:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. V/H/S/85 — approximately 1985
  2. V/H/S/94 — 1994
  3. V/H/S/99 — 1999
  4. V/H/S — contemporary to its 2012 production and release context
  5. V/H/S/2 — the contemporary sequel era
  6. V/H/S: Viral — the post-original-trilogy internet era
  7. V/H/S/Beyond — a modern or near-future science-fiction setting, without one confirmed anthology-wide year
  8. V/H/S/Halloween — the latest practical placement because it is the newest released main-series film and does not establish an earlier overall calendar year

The first three positions are the most secure. Their titles and official descriptions directly identify 1985, 1994, and 1999. The rest are practical placements based on framing stories, recording technology, release context, and broad themes. Individual segments can have their own settings, and the films do not provide a complete official chronology that places every tape on one master timeline.

Which order should you choose?

Viewer Best route Why
First-time viewer V/H/S → V/H/S/2 → V/H/S: Viral → V/H/S/94 → V/H/S/99 → V/H/S/85 → V/H/S/Beyond → V/H/S/Halloween Preserves the franchise’s evolution and makes the format changes easier to follow.
Chronology-focused viewer V/H/S/85 → V/H/S/94 → V/H/S/99 → V/H/S → V/H/S/2 → V/H/S: Viral → V/H/S/Beyond → V/H/S/Halloween Moves from the explicitly dated period films into the modern and science-fiction entries.
Completionist Watch the eight main films in release order, then add Siren and Kids vs. Aliens as optional companions. Keeps the numbered anthology series separate from its feature-length expansions.
Alien-focused viewer V/H/S/2 → Kids vs. Aliens → V/H/S/Beyond Follows an alien-related thematic branch, not a confirmed single continuity.

Optional V/H/S spin-offs and expanded stories

Siren (2016)

Siren is a feature-length expansion of Amateur Night, the segment from the original V/H/S. Watch it after V/H/S if you want to see that concept developed beyond its original anthology appearance. It is not one of the eight numbered main-series films and is not required for the main sequence.

Kids vs. Aliens (2022)

Kids vs. Aliens expands the Slumber Party Alien Abduction concept from V/H/S/2 into a standalone feature. Place it after V/H/S/2 if you want to follow the franchise’s alien-themed branch. Like Siren, it is optional and does not need to be inserted into the eight-film release order.

Where to watch the V/H/S films

For U.S. viewers, Shudder is the principal verified home for several of the later films, including V/H/S/94, V/H/S/99, V/H/S/85, and V/H/S/Beyond. The original V/H/S is also listed through digital rental and purchase outlets, including Amazon Video. The exact catalog, price, and availability can vary by country and can change over time, so check the listing for your location before subscribing or renting.

If you prefer discs, the V/H/S Blu-ray or DVD is a practical physical starting point because the original is the franchise’s first film and is central to the recommended route. It is not a collection of every anthology. V/H/S/Beyond also received a U.S. Blu-ray/DVD release dated February 4, 2025, making the V/H/S/Beyond Blu-ray a useful option for collectors who want a physical copy of the science-fiction entry. Stock and regional editions may differ.

Are the V/H/S films one continuous story?

Not exactly. Each movie is an anthology made up of separate segments, usually connected by a framing narrative involving videotapes, recordings, or a related media device. Some concepts and characters receive feature-length expansions, and the films share a recognizable format and mythology, but there is no fully mapped chronology that places every segment in one continuous timeline.

That is why “chronological order” here means the approximate era depicted by each anthology, not a canonical scene-by-scene timeline. Release order is the safer recommendation when continuity and context matter.

What to know before starting

  • Do not expect conventional sequel structure. The films are collections of short horror stories with connective framing material.
  • Do not treat the dated titles as a complete timeline. They firmly establish broad eras, but not every segment’s exact place in franchise continuity.
  • Start with release order if you are new. It shows how the series changed from its 2012 origins through its later period and science-fiction anthologies.
  • Use chronology as a second viewing route. It is most rewarding when you are interested in analog technology, period details, or the franchise’s movement from the 1980s through the internet era.
  • Keep the spin-offs separate. Siren and Kids vs. Aliens expand individual concepts but are not prerequisites for the main series.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is there a required order for watching the V/H/S movies?

No. The anthology segments are mostly self-contained, but release order is recommended for a first viewing because it preserves the franchise’s development: V/H/S, V/H/S/2, V/H/S: Viral, V/H/S/94, V/H/S/99, V/H/S/85, V/H/S/Beyond, and V/H/S/Halloween.

Does V/H/S have one official chronological timeline?

No complete, authoritative timeline has been established for every segment. The chronological list is best understood as an approximate order by depicted era, with V/H/S/85, V/H/S/94, and V/H/S/99 providing the clearest dated placements.

Do I need to watch Siren and Kids vs. Aliens?

No. Siren expands the Amateur Night segment from V/H/S, while Kids vs. Aliens expands the alien-related concept from V/H/S/2. Both are optional companion films.

Where can I watch the V/H/S movies in the United States?

Shudder is the principal verified U.S.-oriented streaming home for several later entries, including V/H/S/94, V/H/S/99, V/H/S/85, and V/H/S/Beyond. The original film is also available through digital rental and purchase listings. Availability and pricing vary by country and date.

Is V/H/S/Halloween the final V/H/S movie?

It is the eighth released main-series entry as of the research date, but it should not be called the definitive final film unless an official announcement confirms that the franchise has ended.

The Bottom Line

Best overall order: watch the eight main films by release date—V/H/S, V/H/S/2, V/H/S: Viral, V/H/S/94, V/H/S/99, V/H/S/85, V/H/S/Beyond, and V/H/S/Halloween. Choose the approximate chronological route only if moving through the depicted eras matters more to you than following the franchise’s real-world evolution.
