For most listeners, Audible is the best dedicated audiobook app; Libby is the best free option if you have a participating library card. Spotify is convenient for eligible Premium subscribers but includes a monthly listening allowance, while Everand is better for readers who want audiobooks and ebooks together. Apple Books, Google Play Books, Chirp, Libro.fm, Kobo Books, Hoopla, and Downpour each serve a more specific need.

The right choice depends less on a universal catalog-size ranking than on how you borrow, subscribe, or buy—and whether you need offline listening, car integration, ebook syncing, bookstore support, or DRM-free files.

Quick answer: which audiobook app should you choose?

Audible is the best all-around choice if you want a dedicated audiobook service with a deep feature set. Libby is the first app to try if you have a participating public-library card and want to borrow audiobooks at no direct cost. Spotify is convenient for eligible Premium subscribers, but its audiobook listening is metered rather than unlimited.

For readers who move between audio and text, choose Everand. For one-off purchases, Apple Books suits iPhone users and Google Play Books suits Android users. Chirp is built for discounts, Libro.fm supports independent bookstores, Kobo Books fits Kobo device owners, and Hoopla is another useful library-card option.

Audible A dedicated audiobook library Paid subscription after any applicable trial Confirm current plan terms and regional availability before subscribing
Libby Free borrowing with a library card Library loans Catalogs, waitlists, loan periods, and borrowing limits depend on the library
Spotify Existing eligible Premium subscribers Monthly audiobook listening allowance Not an unrestricted replacement for an audiobook-first service

Apple Books Individual purchases on iPhone Buy titles individually Not a broad audiobook subscription catalog
Google Play Books Individual purchases on Android Buy titles individually Best integrated with Google services and Android devices

Libro.fm Supporting independent bookstores Individual audiobook purchases Its main advantage is bookstore support and DRM-free availability, not an unlimited catalog
Kobo Books Kobo readers and cross-device syncing Individual Kobo purchases and Kobo Plus options Audiobook availability and subscription options vary by country
Hoopla Library borrowing beyond books Library loans Requires a participating library; monthly limits and catalog access vary
Downpour DRM-conscious audiobook buyers Individual purchases DRM status is title-specific; some files work only in Downpour apps

1. Audible: best dedicated audiobook app

Choose the Audible app if audiobooks are your primary form of reading and you want an app designed around listening rather than added to a music or ebook service. It is a strong fit for commutes, travel, exercise, and family listening because the app supports offline playback, adjustable speed, a sleep timer, bookmarks, reviews, curated collections, and listening challenges.

Audible also documents CarPlay, Apple Watch playback, Alexa-enabled listening, and kids profiles. Those integrations make it more practical for listeners who move between a phone, car, watch, smart speaker, and family account. Downloading a title before a flight or road trip also avoids relying on a mobile signal.

The main reason not to choose Audible is its commercial subscription model. A subscription is required after any applicable trial, and the exact plan lineup and price should be checked for your country before signing up. The app is most compelling when you expect to listen regularly and value audiobook-specific discovery and playback tools.

2. Libby: best free audiobook app with a library card

Libby should be your first stop if you have a card from a participating public library. You can borrow audiobooks, ebooks, and magazines, stream them or download them for offline listening, and return them through the app. Its player includes variable playback speed, a sleep timer, bookmarks, notes, and highlights.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Libby is also unusually useful in a car. Its documented integrations include Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Android Automotive, and Bluetooth listening. That combination makes it a strong free option for commuters who want library audiobooks without adding another monthly bill.

“Free” does not mean unlimited or universally available. You need an eligible card and a library system that licenses the title you want. The size of the catalog, loan period, number of simultaneous borrows, waitlist length, and renewal rules are controlled by the library and its digital licensing agreements. A popular new release may have a long queue, while another library may not carry it at all.

If your local library offers Libby, try it before paying for a commercial subscription. It is particularly good for readers who can plan around holds and due dates.

3. Spotify: best for eligible Premium subscribers

Spotify makes the most sense when you already pay for an eligible Premium plan and want music, podcasts, and audiobooks in one app. Spotify’s U.S. audiobook materials describe selected Premium plans as including 15 hours of audiobook listening per month from a catalog of more than 700,000 titles. Spotify also documents Audiobooks+ add-ons for additional listening hours.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The convenience is real, but the listening allowance changes the calculation. A 15-hour allowance may suit someone who listens to an audiobook occasionally or takes a few short trips. It is less suitable for a listener who finishes several long books each month. Once you use the included hours, you may need an add-on or another service.

Do not treat Spotify as unlimited audiobook streaming or as a direct one-for-one replacement for Audible. Plan eligibility, monthly hours, catalog access, add-on availability, and pricing can vary by plan and country. Check the offer attached to your own account before choosing Spotify specifically for audiobooks.

4. Everand: best audiobook-and-ebook subscription

Everand is the best fit for readers who regularly switch between listening and reading on screen. Its app combines audiobooks and ebooks, with offline downloads, variable narration speed, sleep timers, bookmarks, customizable progress displays, and multiple subscription levels.

The important detail is the access model. Current app materials describe monthly unlock allowances rather than universal, unlimited access to every audiobook and ebook. An unlock should not automatically be interpreted as a permanent, DRM-free purchase, and the benefits are not necessarily identical across plans.

Everand is attractive when format flexibility matters more than owning a particular file. Before subscribing, check whether the titles you want are available under the plan you are considering and how the monthly unlock system applies to them. It is a better recommendation for mixed-format readers than for someone who only wants the largest possible audiobook-focused service.

5. Apple Books: best for one-off audiobook purchases on iPhone

Apple Books is the natural choice for iPhone users who would rather buy individual audiobooks than maintain another subscription. No subscription is required for purchases. The app emphasizes audiobook discovery through curated collections, personalized recommendations, free books, special offers, and reading goals.

It is also a convenient Apple ecosystem option: audiobooks can be downloaded to an Apple Watch, which is useful for walks or runs when you do not want to carry an iPhone. Apple Books is a good fit when you already know which titles you want and prefer a straightforward purchase inside Apple’s ecosystem.

Its limitation is the same feature that makes it simple: it is purchase-oriented, not an all-you-can-listen audiobook membership. Choose another app if you want to sample many books every month without buying them individually.

6. Google Play Books: best for one-off audiobook purchases on Android

Google Play Books is the Android-native counterpart to Apple Books. You can buy audiobooks individually and access them across a phone, tablet, and computer. The app supports offline downloads, shelves, Android Auto, and voice control through Google Assistant.

It suits Android users who want purchases and listening history kept in the Google ecosystem rather than split across separate services. Android Auto support is a practical advantage for in-car listening, while offline downloads help when traveling or commuting through areas with unreliable reception.

Google Play Books is not presented here as a subscription service. Pick it when you prefer a-la-carte purchases and cross-device access, not when your priority is an unlimited monthly audiobook catalog.

7. Chirp: best for audiobook bargains

Chirp audiobook deals are designed for listeners who want to pay less without taking on a monthly subscription. The service promotes limited-time discounts, including titles offered at low prices, and does not require a subscription fee. Purchased books are available immediately and can be downloaded for offline listening.

The app includes a sleep timer, bookmarks, chapter navigation, and customizable playback speed. The purchasing workflow is different from most app-store services: you search and buy through the Chirp website, then the audiobook appears in the iOS or Android app. The service’s help documentation says that search and purchasing are not currently handled inside the app.

Chirp is closer to a discount retailer than an all-you-can-listen service. It is excellent for patient bargain hunters who are willing to watch for a particular author, narrator, or genre, but less useful if you need every new release immediately.

8. Libro.fm: best for supporting independent bookstores

Libro.fm is the strongest choice for readers who want audiobook purchases to support an independent bookshop. Its support materials say that purchases support a local bookstore, and the service positions itself as one of the few DRM-free audiobook providers. Dedicated apps are available for iPhone and Android.

That makes Libro.fm appealing for listeners who care about where their money goes and who want more flexibility than a locked subscription library can provide. The important distinction is that Libro.fm is primarily a purchase service with bookstore support and DRM-free availability—not a free library app or a claim of unlimited listening.

  • Siri or Voice Command: One Button to activate the Siri or Voice Command In the standby mode, press the Siri Button for 2 seconds to activate the voice command function on Andriod or iOS devices.

DRM policies should always be understood in the context of the service and title. Do not assume that every audiobook sold by every provider has the same download or portability rules simply because the apps have similar playback controls.

9. Kobo Books: best for Kobo device owners

Kobo audiobooks are most compelling if you already use a Kobo eReader or want your ebook and audiobook activity connected to one Kobo account. The app supports audiobook playback controls, sleep timers, and progress synchronization across the Kobo app, web reader, and compatible Kobo eReaders. Kobo Plus options may also be available, depending on the market.

Kobo’s ecosystem advantage matters more than choosing it solely for a single audiobook. If you read an ebook on a Kobo device and sometimes switch to audio, shared progress and one account can reduce friction.

Audiobook availability and Kobo Plus audiobook plans are limited to selected countries. U.S. readers should verify current Kobo Plus audiobook availability and pricing immediately before subscribing; readers elsewhere should check their local Kobo storefront. Do not assume that an option advertised in one country is available in another.

10. Hoopla: another strong library-card option

Hoopla is worth checking alongside Libby if your public library participates. It offers audiobooks as well as ebooks, comics, magazines, music, movies, and television. Its app supports offline downloads, sleep timers, dark mode, and Apple CarPlay.

Hoopla can be especially useful when you want more than books from your library or when a title is available there but not in Libby. However, Libby and Hoopla are not interchangeable services. A library may offer one, both, or neither, and each library sets its own borrowing limits and catalog access.

Because Hoopla often operates with library-defined monthly limits, check your library’s policy before planning to use it as your only audiobook source. It is a valuable no-direct-cost supplement when the catalog and borrowing allowance fit your habits.

11. Downpour: a niche option for DRM-conscious buyers

Downpour audiobooks are worth considering if downloadable ownership and DRM are central to your decision. Downpour’s official FAQ says that much of its catalog is DRM-free, but some publisher-restricted titles use DRM-protected files that can be played only in Downpour’s iOS and Android apps.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That title-by-title distinction is the reason Downpour is a niche recommendation rather than a blanket choice for every buyer. Check the DRM status of each audiobook before purchasing if you need to download, archive, or play files outside the Downpour apps.

Downpour is a better fit for a careful buyer who understands file restrictions than for someone who simply wants the easiest subscription experience.

How to choose the right audiobook app

Choose by how you want to pay

  • Borrow for free: Start with Libby and then check Hoopla if your library supports it.
  • Pay for a dedicated service: Choose Audible if you listen frequently and want audiobook-first features.
  • Use an existing subscription: Spotify can be convenient if your eligible Premium plan includes enough monthly audiobook hours.
  • Combine audio and text: Everand is the most directly suited to moving between audiobooks and ebooks.
  • Buy one title at a time: Use Apple Books on iPhone or Google Play Books on Android.
  • Hunt for discounts: Check Chirp rather than paying for a subscription you may not use.
  • Support bookstores: Choose Libro.fm when independent-bookstore support and DRM-free availability matter.
  • Stay in the Kobo ecosystem: Kobo Books is the logical choice for Kobo hardware and synchronized progress.

Check catalog access before paying

Audiobook availability is not identical across apps. A title may be included in one service, require an unlock in another, appear as a library hold in Libby, or be sold only as an individual purchase elsewhere. Library catalogs are especially variable because each system chooses its licenses.

Search for two or three audiobooks you genuinely plan to hear before committing. For library apps, also check the waitlist and loan period. For Spotify and Everand, check whether the title uses your included allowance or an unlock. For Kobo, verify that the audiobook and any Kobo Plus option are offered in your country.

C. Crane Co SSV SoftSpeaker-2 Pillow Speaker with Volume Control
  • Great for anyone who listens to audio at night to help them fall asleep. Listen to radio shows, audio books, podcasts, late night movies and music at the volume you prefer without disturbing others.
  • Teddy-bear soft cover so you can easily rest your ear right on it. Frequency response: 20 Hz to 20,000 Hz
  • One-year Warranty
  • In-line Volume Control
  • Its durable, high-flex cord and removable, washable cover help ensure longevity

Match the app to your listening routine

  • Long commutes: Offline downloads, reliable resume position, speed controls, and CarPlay or Android Auto matter more than a visually rich store.
  • Travel: Download the title in advance and confirm that it remains playable offline under the service’s access rules.
  • Running or walking: Look for Apple Watch support or comfortable Bluetooth listening. Bluetooth headphones for audiobooks are a practical accessory for private, hands-free listening on either iPhone or Android.
  • Bedtime listening: A sleep timer and easy position recovery are essential; Audible, Libby, Everand, Chirp, Kobo, and Hoopla document sleep-timer support.
  • Family use: Audible’s documented kids profiles may be useful when several listeners share an account or device.
  • Mixed reading: Everand and Kobo are better starting points when you frequently alternate between text and audio.

Understand borrowing, subscription, and purchase models

These apps do not provide the same kind of access. A library loan can expire or become unavailable when your library’s license changes. A subscription may grant access only while the plan is active and may use hours or monthly unlocks. A purchase gives you a title in a retailer account, but portability and DRM vary by provider and title.

That distinction is more important than a small difference in playback controls. If you care about keeping downloadable files, inspect the provider’s DRM policy before buying. Libro.fm specifically promotes DRM-free availability, while Downpour warns that some publisher-restricted titles are DRM-protected. Apple Books, Google Play Books, and Chirp are purchase-oriented, but that should not be interpreted as a promise that every purchased file is unrestricted.

Which audiobook app is best for iPhone?

For a dedicated service, choose Audible. For free library borrowing, choose Libby or Hoopla if your library participates. Apple Books is the simplest option for buying individual audiobooks within the Apple ecosystem, particularly if Apple Watch downloads are useful. Kobo Books is the better choice if your iPhone is part of a wider Kobo reading setup.

Which audiobook app is best for Android?

For a dedicated audiobook service, choose Audible. Libby and Hoopla are the best free options when supported by your library. Google Play Books is the most natural option for individual purchases and Google Assistant or Android Auto integration. Kobo Books is preferable for Kobo users, while Spotify is convenient for eligible Premium subscribers who will remain within the monthly listening allowance.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Bottom line

Start with Libby if you have a participating library card; there is little reason to pay before checking what your library offers. Choose Audible if you listen heavily and want the most audiobook-specific experience. Choose Spotify only when its included monthly hours match your listening habits. Use Everand for an audio-and-ebook routine, Apple Books or Google Play Books for individual purchases, Chirp for bargains, Libro.fm to support independent bookstores, and Kobo Books for Kobo integration.

Before paying, verify the current plan, title availability, regional restrictions, and DRM terms. Those details determine whether an app is genuinely useful for you—not just how many titles appear in its store.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Libby really free?

Libby is free to use for eligible cardholders at participating libraries, but it is not an unlimited commercial catalog. Your library determines which audiobooks are available, how long you can borrow them, the number of loans allowed, and whether you face a waitlist.

Can Spotify replace Audible for audiobooks?

Not necessarily. Spotify’s U.S. materials describe selected Premium plans as including 15 hours of audiobook listening per month. Audiobooks+ add-ons may provide additional hours. Plan eligibility, allowances, and availability vary by country, so check your account’s current offer.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Are Libby and Hoopla interchangeable?

Libby and Hoopla both depend on participating libraries, but they are separate services with different catalogs and borrowing rules. A library may provide one, both, or neither, and its monthly limits may differ between them.

Which audiobook apps let you buy books instead of subscribing?

Apple Books, Google Play Books, and Chirp are designed around individual purchases, while Libro.fm and Downpour also offer purchase-oriented access. DRM and portability differ by provider and sometimes by title. Libro.fm promotes DRM-free availability, while Downpour says some publisher-restricted titles are DRM-protected and playable only in its apps.

The Bottom Line

Best overall: Audible. Best free option: Libby, provided your library participates. Best for Spotify subscribers: Spotify, if the monthly hours are sufficient. The right choice ultimately depends on whether you borrow, subscribe, or buy—and whether you need iPhone, Android, car, watch, ebook, or DRM support.
