Prime membership and Prime Video access are related but should not be treated as permanently identical in every market or plan. Before starting a subscription, check the current Prime Video listing for the United States to see whether the film is included with your plan, whether advertising applies, and whether a trial is available to you. Amazon’s older announcement included historical membership pricing; that price should not be used as a current quote.
Prime Video accessibility features
The Prime Video listing includes English audio description and dialogue-boost options, along with a range of subtitle and dubbed-audio choices. The exact languages and playback features can depend on the account, device, and territory, so check the title page if you need a particular accessibility option.
2. Watch The Idea of You on Peacock
Peacock’s official page currently presents The Idea of You as available to stream. The page identifies the film as a 2024 MGM romance, drama, and comedy starring Hathaway, Galitzine, and Ella Rubin. It lists the runtime as 1 hour 55 minutes.
Peacock is an alternative subscription option, not automatically a free viewing option. U.S. availability listings identify Peacock Premium and Peacock Premium Plus, but the required tier and any promotional terms can change. Confirm the current tier and total cost during signup rather than assuming that every Peacock plan includes the movie.

3. Rent or buy the movie digitally
If you only want to watch the film once, a digital transaction may be more practical than starting a monthly streaming subscription. Current U.S. availability information lists these outlets:
- Amazon Video
- Apple TV Store
- Fandango At Home
These services may offer a rental, a purchase, or both. The exact price, video quality, rental period, download rules, and supported devices are volatile, so compare the live listings immediately before checkout. A digital purchase also normally remains tied to the retailer’s account and playback system; it is not the same as owning a physical disc.
Do you need Amazon Prime to watch it?
Not necessarily. Prime Video is the most direct streaming route, but viewers who do not want Prime can check Peacock or look for a one-time rental or purchase through Amazon Video, Apple TV Store, or Fandango At Home.
Do not confuse Prime Video streaming access with an Amazon Video rental or purchase. A title can appear in Amazon’s video store even when a viewer does not have the subscription access needed to stream it as part of a membership. The checkout screen for your U.S. account will show which option is actually available.

Is the movie based on a book?
Yes. The film is based on Robinne Lee’s novel The Idea of You. Macmillan identifies Lee as the author and the book as the source for the Prime Video adaptation. The publisher’s information identifies the original edition as a 320-page romance published June 13, 2017, with ISBN 9781250353078 and digital-audio availability.
If you want to read the story that inspired the film, The Idea of You by Robinne Lee is available in book and audio editions. Treat the novel and movie as separate versions: an adaptation can change characters, events, emphasis, and the ending, so reading the book may reveal details that are not presented in the film.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. The soundtrack and August Moon songs
Music is a major part of the film because August Moon is the fictional band at the center of Hayes’s career. Amazon Music lists The Idea of You (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack / Deluxe Edition) by Various Artists. The digital release is dated May 3, 2024 and contains 15 tracks, including August Moon songs, acoustic and live material, the song “The Idea of You” performed by Nicholas Galitzine and Anne-Marie, and score music by Siddhartha Khosla.
Prime Video also curates an official Amazon Music playlist associated with the movie. That playlist contains 31 songs, including August Moon tracks and other music used in the film. The available research confirms digital soundtrack and playlist listings, but not a current physical CD or vinyl edition, so do not assume that a physical soundtrack is in stock.
