Why McDonald’s Netherlands Pulled Its AI-Generated Holiday Ad After Backlash

McDonald’s Netherlands pulled an AI-generated Christmas commercial after days of mockery. The backlash targeted both its synthetic visuals and its bleak idea of escaping Christmas at McDonald’s.

McDonald’s Netherlands removed an approximately 45-second Christmas commercial after several days of intense online criticism. The ad used generative AI to turn holiday frustrations—traffic, ruined food, tangled decorations and snowy mishaps—into a deliberately bleak parody of Christmas advertising. Its central joke was that the “most terrible time of the year” could be escaped by hiding in McDonald’s until January.

The backlash was aimed at two things at once: the visibly synthetic, often unsettling imagery and the creative decision to frame Christmas as something from which people should retreat. That combination made the commercial a useful case study in how generative AI can amplify a weak or poorly matched advertising idea rather than rescue it.

What happened to the McDonald’s AI Christmas ad?

McDonald’s Netherlands published the commercial through its YouTube presence on December 6, 2025. Contemporary reports said the video was removed or made unavailable around December 9, after viewers heavily criticized it. Some reports described comments being disabled before the upload was delisted. Because copies and reuploads circulated afterward, accounts differ slightly over the precise moment when the original video disappeared.

On December 10, McDonald’s Netherlands confirmed that it had decided to remove the AI-generated Christmas advertisement. The company said the campaign had been produced for its Netherlands operation and described the episode as an important learning opportunity. There is no evidence in the available reporting that McDonald’s permanently abandoned AI advertising or that the campaign represented a global McDonald’s decision.

The ad turned Christmas into an endurance test

The commercial inverted the familiar Christmas-advertising formula. Instead of beginning with warmth, family and seasonal magic, it used the phrase “It’s the Most Terrible Time of the Year” and assembled a rapid series of holiday disasters.

Reported scenes included traffic and transport problems, people slipping in snowy conditions, overloaded gifts, burnt food or cookies, tangled decorations and other exaggerated seasonal frustrations. The ending presented McDonald’s as a refuge: viewers were effectively invited to retreat to the restaurant and remain there until the holiday period was over.

The concept appears to have been intended as an irreverent acknowledgement of holiday stress. McDonald’s later explained that the campaign was meant to show the difficult moments many people experience while recognizing that Christmas is still regarded by many as “the most wonderful time of the year.”

That intention did not come through for many viewers. The premise could be read less as a friendly joke about seasonal pressure and more as an unusually cynical message: Christmas is miserable, the imagery is chaotic, and McDonald’s is the place to hide from it. For a brand operating during one of the year’s most emotionally loaded periods, that distinction mattered.

Why viewers mocked the commercial

1. The AI artifacts were easy to notice

Coverage described the commercial as unsettling, chaotic and soulless. Rapidly changing shots made it difficult to assess every frame, but viewers still noticed apparent problems with continuity, physical plausibility and the behavior of objects and people.

Those flaws are particularly damaging in a short advertisement. A fast montage can conceal individual imperfections, but it can also make the entire piece feel like a sequence of disconnected generated images rather than a controlled story. As reporting on the commercial noted, short, rapidly edited scenes can themselves become a recognizable signal of current AI video: the production avoids asking the system to maintain characters, environments and physical action over a longer continuous shot.

The result was not simply “unusual” or surreal. To critics, it looked unfinished or emotionally vacant—the visual novelty was more apparent than the intended humor.

2. The holiday message was tonally wrong for the brand

The use of AI was not the only source of criticism. The underlying idea also created a difficult emotional problem.

Christmas advertising depends heavily on emotional shorthand: comfort, togetherness, generosity, nostalgia and anticipation. A campaign can challenge those conventions, but it generally needs to replace them with an equally persuasive human insight. In this case, the ad’s insight was that the holidays can be stressful. That is relatable, but the execution reportedly pushed the idea toward misery and escape rather than relief, connection or warmth.

The McDonald’s ending therefore did not necessarily feel like a comforting break. It could be interpreted as a brand asking customers to abandon the holiday altogether and seek shelter in a fast-food restaurant. The deliberately hostile twist on the traditional Christmas lyric gave critics an obvious line to mock, while the synthetic visuals gave them an equally obvious visual target.

3. AI made the strategic weakness more visible

It would be too simple to say that every negative reaction was caused by artificial intelligence. A conventional production could also have created an anti-Christmas commercial that audiences found bleak, frantic or poorly matched to the brand.

But generative AI added another layer of distrust. Once viewers perceived the images as synthetic, the ad could be interpreted as an example of a company choosing technical novelty over emotional craftsmanship. The technology did not merely produce controversial visuals; it shaped how people judged the intent behind them.

This is the central lesson of the episode. The ad’s problem was best understood as a combination of creative strategy and execution. The gloomy concept created the tonal mismatch, while the visible AI artifacts amplified the impression that the work was impersonal or low-effort.

Who made the commercial?

Contemporary reporting identified Dutch advertising agency TBWANEBOKO as the agency behind the campaign and The Sweetshop as its production company. The project was associated with The Gardening Club, which describes itself as an AI and innovation arm that grew out of The Sweetshop.

The commercial was widely described as AI-generated or made entirely with generative AI. However, that description should not be confused with a simple prompt-to-video workflow.

Melanie Bridge, chief executive of The Sweetshop, said the team worked for seven weeks, involved up to 10 AI and post-production specialists, and generated thousands of iterations. She said the team then edited, composited, corrected artifacts, balanced lighting and completed the spot through post-production.

Those figures are production-company claims, not an independently audited record. They are still important because they complicate the assumption that an AI-generated commercial is automatically cheap, fast or labor-free. The available evidence does not establish that this project cost less or took less time than a conventional commercial. In fact, the production-side account emphasizes substantial human involvement.

A short chronology

Date What was reported
December 6, 2025 The approximately 45-second commercial appeared through McDonald’s Netherlands’ YouTube presence.
December 9, 2025 Reports said comments had been disabled and the video had been delisted or made unavailable after heavy criticism.
December 9–10, 2025 Other coverage described the upload as removed after only several days. Copies and reuploads made the exact visibility change harder to establish.
December 10, 2025 McDonald’s Netherlands confirmed the removal and said the advert had been produced for its Netherlands operation.
December 10–13, 2025 Discussion widened to AI advertising, creative labor, authenticity, brand fit and the role of synthetic imagery in emotionally important campaigns.

What the episode says about AI advertising

The commercial arrived amid wider debate about AI-generated holiday advertising, including criticism of other high-profile experiments such as Coca-Cola campaigns. Brands may see generative AI as a way to explore strange visual worlds, produce more variations or reduce some production constraints. Audiences, however, may interpret visibly synthetic work as evidence of low effort or emotional distance.

That does not mean audiences will reject every advertisement that uses generative AI. The more useful question is whether viewers can understand and feel the idea before they start inspecting the technology.

An AI-assisted campaign has a better chance when:

  • the concept is emotionally clear without relying on the novelty of the tool;
  • the visual style is coherent rather than merely uncanny;
  • human performers, characters and environments maintain continuity;
  • the brand’s tone matches the emotional context of the campaign;
  • human artists and editors are given enough time to correct errors and make deliberate creative decisions; and
  • the company is prepared to explain the production process honestly when audiences ask.

McDonald’s Netherlands’ commercial exposed the opposite risk. Its emotional proposition was already divisive, and the synthetic style made the gap between the brand’s intended message and the audience’s interpretation impossible to ignore.

The larger lesson: technology cannot repair brand strategy

Generative AI can help an advertiser explore images that would be expensive, impractical or impossible to stage conventionally. It can also introduce continuity problems, visual artifacts and a sense that no one is fully responsible for the final image. Neither outcome is inevitable; both depend on the concept, the workflow and the level of human control.

In this case, the technology seems to have made a strategic weakness unusually legible. A more coherent production might have made the “holiday stress” idea easier to understand, but it would not automatically have solved the question of why a Christmas campaign should ask people to hide from Christmas. Conversely, a warmer and more generous concept might have made audiences more forgiving of occasional synthetic imperfections.

The unresolved industry question is therefore not whether AI can make an advertisement. It plainly can, and this project reportedly involved weeks of work and a large number of human specialists. The question is whether audiences will accept generative AI when the result is emotionally resonant, visually coherent and clearly connected to the brand—rather than when the technology itself is the most memorable part of the campaign.

How long was the commercial online?

The ad was published on December 6, 2025, and reports said it was removed or made unavailable around December 9–10. Because copies and reuploads circulated afterward, accounts differ over the exact public visibility transition.

Was the commercial made entirely by AI?

Contemporary coverage described it as AI-generated or overwhelmingly produced with generative AI. The production company said the project also involved up to 10 AI and post-production specialists, seven weeks of work, thousands of iterations, editing, compositing, artifact correction and finishing.

Why did people dislike the advertisement?

Criticism focused on both its visibly synthetic imagery and its bleak creative premise. The ad portrayed Christmas as “the most terrible time of the year” and suggested escaping the holiday in McDonald’s, which many viewers considered a poor emotional fit for a Christmas campaign.

Did McDonald’s stop using AI in advertising?

The available evidence does not support that broader conclusion. It shows that McDonald’s Netherlands removed this particular advertisement after backlash.

The Bottom Line

The McDonald’s Netherlands commercial was not rejected simply because it used AI. Its rapid, synthetic-looking imagery made the ad easy to mock, but the deeper problem was the combination of an unsettling execution with an unusually bleak Christmas proposition. The case shows that generative AI can magnify a brand mismatch: it cannot substitute for a strong emotional idea, coherent visual direction and careful human finishing.
