10 Free Netflix Alternatives in 2026: Best Apps and Sites

No single free service replaces Netflix, but Tubi, Kanopy, Hoopla, Pluto TV, Plex, YouTube, and other legal platforms can cover movies, documentaries, TV, and live channels without a monthly subscription.

The closest free replacement for Netflix is Tubi, but no free service matches Netflix’s combination of original programming, predictable catalog depth, and ad-free viewing. The most useful no-cost setup combines an ad-supported service such as Tubi, Pluto TV, or The Roku Channel with a library platform such as Kanopy or Hoopla.

“Free” usually means one of two things: you watch advertisements, or your public library, college, or university pays for access. Catalogs, channels, subtitles, supported devices, and library limits change frequently, so use these recommendations to choose the right type of service rather than expecting a particular film or series to remain available.

What to expect from a free Netflix alternative

Free streaming is legal when the service has the rights to distribute its movies and shows. It is not a hidden version of Netflix with every current release. Most free streaming platforms have rotating catalogs, advertising breaks, older films, television libraries, live channels, or a mixture of all four.

  • Ad-supported streaming: You pay nothing, but advertisements support the service. Tubi, Pluto TV, The Roku Channel, Xumo Play, Sling Freestream, Plex, and YouTube’s free movie and TV sections use this model.
  • Library-funded streaming: You sign in through a participating library, college, or university. Kanopy and Hoopla are the main options, although each institution controls eligibility, catalog access, and borrowing limits.
  • Free live television: FAST services—short for free ad-supported television—organize much of their programming into scheduled channels. This is closer to traditional television than Netflix’s on-demand interface.

None of these services reliably provides Netflix Originals, and a title that is available today may disappear after a licensing change. For that reason, the rankings below are based on each service’s access model and strengths, not on promises about individual titles.

1. Tubi: the best overall free Netflix alternative

Tubi is the best first stop for most people who want a large, general-purpose collection of movies and television without paying for a subscription. Its service description lists thousands of movies and TV shows and says viewers can use it without a subscription or credit card. It is available across the web, mobile devices, smart TVs, game consoles, and common streaming platforms.

Tubi is legal and funded by advertising. There is currently no ad-free option, so the trade is straightforward: no monthly bill in exchange for commercial breaks. The catalog rotates, and Tubi does not promise access to a particular Netflix Original or any other title indefinitely.

Best for: General movie and TV browsing, households with several types of devices, and anyone who wants the simplest place to begin.

Why it suits documentary viewers: Tubi’s broad catalog can be useful for browsing documentary and factual categories alongside mainstream movies and series, but its availability should be checked in the app rather than assumed from a search result or an old list.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose something else if: You want ad-free viewing, a guaranteed new release, or a carefully curated documentary collection. Kanopy is usually the better first check for those seeking independent, international, or educational films through a library.

2. Pluto TV: the best free service for channel surfing

Pluto TV combines hundreds of free live channels with thousands of on-demand movies and television programs. Its channel-style experience includes news, sports, themed entertainment, fan-favorite shows, movies, and other scheduled programming, while its on-demand area provides more control over what you watch.

Pluto is especially useful when you miss turning on the television and finding something already playing. It can also work well as background viewing. The downside is that a live channel may be showing a program you would not have chosen, and the on-demand experience is not always as central as it is on Netflix. Programming and availability change over time.

Best for: Traditional-TV schedules, themed channels, news, sports coverage, and lean-back viewing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose something else if: You want to search for one specific documentary and start it immediately without checking whether it is currently scheduled or available on demand.

3. The Roku Channel: the best mix of free on-demand and live TV

The Roku Channel combines free, ad-supported movies and television with live channels, kids’ programming, news, and Roku Originals. Roku’s current support information describes thousands of free shows and movies and more than 350 free live TV channels, although the exact lineup depends on location, device, and licensing.

You can find The Roku Channel on Roku devices and through its website and mobile apps. Roku also documents availability on selected third-party platforms, including Amazon Fire TV, Samsung televisions, and Google TV. The app may place paid or premium subscriptions near free programming, so check the label before starting a title or entering payment information.

  • Wi-Fi 6 support - Enjoy smooth 4K streaming, even when other devices are connected to your router.

Best for: Viewers who want one guide containing both on-demand programs and live television, including news, children’s content, and Roku Originals.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Trade-offs: Some features and programs are region- or device-dependent. It is a useful free hub, but it is not one universal catalog available identically on every television.

4. Xumo Play: the best no-login FAST option

Xumo Play is designed for immediate, free viewing. Xumo describes it as an ad-supported service that requires no subscription, account, or credit card. It offers live news, sports, selected events, movies, television, and on-demand programming across the web, mobile devices, smart TVs, and streaming hardware.

Xumo’s current service information describes hundreds of channels—one current service page lists more than 350—and about 15,000 on-demand titles. Its support documentation uses a lower “more than 300 channels” description, which illustrates why channel and title counts should be treated as snapshots rather than permanent guarantees.

Best for: People who want to start watching immediately without registering, especially those who prefer live channels to a large on-demand library.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Trade-offs: Xumo Play feels more like a free cable guide than a Netflix replacement. It is strongest when you are happy to browse channels and categories instead of building a carefully managed watchlist.

5. Sling Freestream: the best large free live-TV lineup

Sling Freestream is Sling’s free, ad-supported service. Its current service page advertises more than 600 free channels and more than 40,000 on-demand shows and movies. Basic viewing does not require an account.

Creating a free account adds useful features, including favorites, watchlists, profiles, parental controls, rewards, and up to 10 hours of free DVR storage. That makes registration worthwhile for households that want to organize a large lineup, even though it is not required for basic access.

Sling Freestream is particularly relevant for news, reality television, classic programming, international channels, and sports-oriented channels. It is less suitable for someone who expects every program to behave like a Netflix title that can be started, paused, and resumed whenever desired.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Best for: The largest-feeling free live-TV guide and viewers who enjoy scheduled programming.

Trade-offs: Channel counts, titles, and availability change. The service’s large headline numbers should not be interpreted as a promise that every show is available on demand.

6. Plex: the best free streaming service for people with personal media

Plex offers legal, ad-supported movies and television, along with free live channels. You can begin watching without a paid subscription or credit card. An optional free account adds watchlists, cross-device progress, favorite channels, and personalization.

Plex’s distinctive advantage is that the same broader ecosystem can also organize your own legally acquired movie and TV collection through Plex Media Server. That requires a computer or other suitable hardware to store and serve the files, so this part is not an instant, no-setup alternative to Netflix. It is best understood as two capabilities in one ecosystem: free licensed streaming supplied by Plex, and a personal media library that you manage yourself.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Best for: Viewers who want free licensed content and a central interface for their own media collection.

Trade-offs: The free catalog is ad-supported and can be less predictable than a paid service. Personal media setup involves storage, server software, network access, and some troubleshooting.

7. Kanopy: the best ad-free library option for documentaries

For documentary viewers, Kanopy may be the most valuable Netflix alternative on this list. It is available through participating public libraries and colleges or universities, and its catalog is particularly suited to documentaries, independent films, international cinema, educational video, and other curated programming.

Kanopy generally provides an ad-free library-funded viewing experience, but it is not universally free for everyone. You need access through a participating institution. Public-library users typically create an account with their library card number and PIN or password; university users use the relevant university login. Your institution determines whether Kanopy is offered and what access rules apply.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Libraries may impose ticket or viewing limits, and access can be temporarily restricted when an institution reaches its usage budget or changes its agreement. Those limits mean Kanopy is not necessarily a limitless replacement for a household’s entire streaming subscription stack.

Best for: Documentaries, independent and international films, educational video, and viewers who would rather accept library limits than watch advertisements.

Trade-offs: You need an eligible library card or university login, and the catalog is not designed to duplicate Netflix’s mainstream entertainment library. Check your local library’s digital-services page to confirm participation before planning around Kanopy.

8. Hoopla: the best library-card borrowing option

Hoopla lets patrons of participating public libraries borrow digital movies and television, as well as ebooks, audiobooks, music, comics, and magazines. Access is free through the library, but a valid library card and a participating library are required.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Hoopla works more like a digital lending service than an unlimited streaming subscription. Your library determines which titles are licensed, how many borrows you receive each month, and the loan periods. Some titles may be immediately available, while others may not be offered by your library at all.

  • Enjoy the show in 4K Ultra HD, with support for Dolby Vision, HDR10+, and immersive Dolby Atmos audio.

Best for: Library-card holders who want movies and television alongside books, audiobooks, music, and other digital media.

Why it matters for documentaries: Documentary availability can be more useful when you search through your library’s own digital collection rather than relying only on commercial FAST catalogs. The result is institution-specific, so two nearby library systems may offer different programs.

Trade-offs: Participation, monthly borrowing limits, loan periods, and the catalog vary by library. A library card alone does not guarantee access to every Hoopla title.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

9. YouTube Free Primetime Movies & Shows: the best familiar interface

YouTube’s Free Primetime Movies & Shows program provides a no-cost, ad-supported collection separate from YouTube’s rental and purchase inventory. The catalog is refreshed regularly and can be browsed through YouTube’s free-movie and free-show sections.

Availability is currently documented in the United States, Australia, Japan, Germany, and the United Kingdom. Free ad-supported television shows are also available to viewers in the United States and Australia. The exact selection depends on location and changes over time.

Best for: People who already use YouTube, want a familiar web and television interface, or prefer to check a rotating selection of studio content.

Important distinction: A movie appearing in YouTube search results does not mean it is free. YouTube also displays rentals, purchases, channel memberships, and other paid options. Look specifically for the free program or a clear free-with-ads label before pressing play.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

10. Free channels and apps built into your smart TV or streaming platform

Your television or streaming device may already provide a useful free-TV hub. Roku documents free live channels and on-demand programming in its platform experience. Xumo also lists access to services such as Xumo Play, Tubi, and Pluto TV on compatible Xumo devices. Other smart-TV manufacturers and streaming platforms provide their own free channels or app rows.

This is not one unified Netflix alternative. It is a convenient way to combine several services behind one remote, home screen, or guide. The experience depends on your device manufacturer, country, installed apps, and current third-party licensing.

Best for: Households that already own a compatible smart TV or streaming device and want a single starting point for several free services.

Trade-offs: A built-in channel guide does not make every service identical or every program available. You may still need separate apps, accounts, privacy settings, and watchlists.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Which free Netflix alternative should you choose?

If you want… Start with… Why
The closest general replacement Tubi Broad on-demand movie and TV browsing with no subscription or credit card required.
Free live television Sling Freestream or Pluto TV Both emphasize live channels; Sling promotes a particularly large lineup, while Pluto is strong for simple channel surfing.
No account for basic viewing Xumo Play or Sling Freestream Both describe basic access without creating an account.
On-demand and live TV together The Roku Channel It combines free movies and shows with a large free live-TV guide and Roku Originals.
Free streaming plus your own media Plex It adds personal-media organization to its own free, ad-supported catalog.
Documentaries and independent films Kanopy Its library and university model is often a better fit for curated, educational, independent, and international viewing.
Library-card borrowing Hoopla It lets participating-library patrons borrow video and other digital media.
A familiar browser and TV interface YouTube Free Primetime Movies & Shows It uses an interface many viewers already understand and regularly refreshes its free catalog.

A practical free streaming setup for documentary viewers

  1. Check your library first. Search your public library’s digital-services page for Kanopy and Hoopla. These services may provide the most distinctive documentary and educational options, but eligibility and monthly limits are local.
  2. Install one broad on-demand service. Tubi is the logical starting point if you want a large general catalog. Plex or The Roku Channel are alternatives if you also want live channels or personal-media features.
  3. Add one live-TV service only if you will use it. Pluto TV, Xumo Play, and Sling Freestream overlap in purpose. You do not need all three unless their channel lineups solve different needs for your household.
  4. Check YouTube separately. Search the free movie and show sections rather than assuming that every result marked as a movie is included at no charge.
  5. Use the official app or website. Avoid unofficial APK files, mirror sites, pop-up-heavy movie pages, and services that ask you to use a VPN to access allegedly free copyrighted content.
  6. Expect to search more than once. Free catalogs rotate. If a documentary is unavailable on one service, check Kanopy, Hoopla, Tubi, Plex, YouTube’s free section, and the live-service on-demand areas before concluding that it is unavailable everywhere.

What you need to watch

You need a reliable internet connection and a supported device: a web browser, phone or tablet, smart TV, game console, or streaming device, depending on the service. Compatibility is not universal. A service may be available on a Roku device but not on an older television, or it may provide different features on its website and mobile app.

If your television lacks convenient access to the apps, a Fire TV Stick HD can provide a simple way to put services such as Tubi, Pluto TV, The Roku Channel, Xumo Play, Plex, and YouTube on the TV. The device itself is a purchase; it does not make the streaming services paid, remove advertisements, or guarantee access to every app in every country. Verify current model availability and app compatibility before buying.

If you also want local broadcast stations, an indoor HDTV antenna may complement free streaming on a compatible television. It is a separate cord-cutting option, not a Netflix-style on-demand library: it receives local over-the-air broadcasts where signal and station coverage allow.

Why a title may be missing or unavailable

  • Licensing changed: Free services regularly add and remove titles.
  • Your location is different: Country, state, and sometimes local licensing rules affect catalogs and channels.
  • Your device has a different lineup: Some services support selected smart-TV brands or streaming platforms, and features may vary.
  • Your library uses a different collection: Kanopy and Hoopla catalogs and monthly limits are determined by the participating institution.
  • You found a paid listing: YouTube and The Roku Channel can display premium or rental content beside free programs.
  • The program is live-only: A channel service may carry a show on a schedule without offering the episode on demand.

These are normal limitations of free streaming, not signs that you need a VPN. Do not use a VPN to bypass regional rights restrictions, and do not trust unauthorized sites that promise every new movie without ads or payment. They may expose viewers to redirects, malware, intrusive pop-ups, or copyright infringement.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is one free service enough?

Usually not if you want the breadth of a paid subscription. A practical combination might be Kanopy or Hoopla for library documentaries, Tubi for broad on-demand browsing, and Pluto TV, Xumo Play, or Sling Freestream for live channels. Add YouTube when its current free catalog contains something you want to watch.

The trade-off is convenience. You may have to check several apps, tolerate ads on commercial services, remember which library limits apply, and accept that the catalog will change. In return, you avoid a recurring subscription and can build a legal viewing setup around the types of programs you actually watch.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are these free Netflix alternatives legal?

Yes. The services listed here are legitimate ad-supported platforms, library-funded services, or official free sections of established platforms. Avoid unauthorized mirror sites, unofficial apps, and services that require a VPN to access copyrighted movies or shows.

Which free Netflix alternative is best for documentaries?

Start with Kanopy if your public library, college, or university participates. It is generally ad-free and is particularly suited to documentaries, independent films, international cinema, and educational video. Hoopla is another strong library-card option, while Tubi, Plex, and YouTube can provide additional rotating choices.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I watch Netflix Originals on these services?

No service on this list guarantees Netflix Originals or reproduces Netflix’s full catalog. Some individual titles may appear elsewhere after licensing changes, but free catalogs rotate and availability varies by location.

Which services work without an account?

Xumo Play describes access without a subscription, account, or credit card. Sling Freestream says basic viewing does not require an account. Tubi also says no subscription or credit card is required. Other services may offer optional accounts or require library credentials.

Are free streaming services completely ad-free?

Commercial services such as Tubi, Pluto TV, The Roku Channel, Xumo Play, Sling Freestream, Plex, and YouTube’s free movie and TV sections are ad-supported. Kanopy is generally ad-free because participating libraries and institutions fund access, although library usage limits can apply.

The Bottom Line

Start with Tubi for the broadest free Netflix-style experience, Kanopy or Hoopla for library-based documentaries, and Pluto TV, Xumo Play, or Sling Freestream for live channels. The best setup is usually a small combination of services, not one perfect replacement. Expect advertising or library limits, verify availability in your country and on your device, and remember that every free catalog can change.
