Editor’s note: This is an archived U.S. weekend guide for September 27–28, 2025, not a guide to the current weekend. The release dates and platform information below describe that original weekend; availability may have changed since then.
The weekend’s strongest event release was One Battle After Another, Paul Thomas Anderson’s new theatrical film starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Sean Penn. At home, Netflix’s historical family saga House of Guinness was the clearest binge candidate, while the returning Law & Order shows offered the most immediately accessible television. The rest of the lineup covered adult drama, action-comedy, true crime, senior dating and celebrity endurance competition.

1. One Battle After Another: the weekend’s prestige theatrical event
If you are choosing one new movie to see on a big screen, One Battle After Another is the obvious event pick. Paul Thomas Anderson’s feature opened theatrically on September 26, 2025, with Leonardo DiCaprio playing Bob Ferguson, a former rebel and vigilante whose daughter, Willa, is abducted by a character played by Sean Penn.
The combination of Anderson, DiCaprio and Penn makes this the lineup’s most conspicuous prestige release. It is also the selection most likely to benefit from a theater’s scale and sound system. This was not a streaming release during the September 27–28 weekend, so viewers looking for something to watch at home should choose one of the series below instead.

Viewing note: Physical-media availability was not verified for this guide. If you are reading this retrospectively and want to own the film, check the current release format and retailer inventory rather than assuming a Blu-ray or 4K edition is available.
2. Eleanor the Great: a quieter alternative at the cinema
For a more intimate theatrical choice, Eleanor the Great offers Scarlett Johansson’s directorial debut and a lead performance from June Squibb. Squibb plays Eleanor Morgenstein, a 90-year-old woman attempting to rebuild her life after the death of her best friend and a move back to New York City after decades in Florida.
Chiwetel Ejiofor, Jessica Hecht and Erin Kellyman also appear. Sony Pictures Classics announced a nationwide theatrical release in the United States and Canada for September 26, 2025.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →The film is a useful counterweight to Anderson’s larger-scale, more overtly event-oriented movie. Its central question is not what happens when a former fighter is pulled back into danger, but how someone starts over late in life after losing the person who anchored her world.
Choose it if: you want an adult drama centered on reinvention, grief and an older protagonist rather than spectacle or franchise storytelling.
3. House of Guinness: Netflix’s beer-dynasty family saga
House of Guinness is the weekend’s strongest binge option. The eight-episode Netflix drama begins in Dublin in 1868, after the death of brewery patriarch Sir Benjamin Lee Guinness. The story follows his four children—Arthur, Edward, Anne and Benjamin—as they face the future of the family business while dealing with political pressure, private conflicts and secrets.
The series comes from Steven Knight, the creator of Peaky Blinders, which gives viewers a clear indication of its appeal: a historical setting, a powerful family, social tension and a business empire that becomes a source of both privilege and conflict.

- Cinematic streaming: This TV streaming device brings the movie theater to your living room with spectacular 4K, HDR10+, and Dolby Vision picture alongside immersive Dolby Atmos audio.
- The ultimate Roku remote: The rechargeable Roku Voice Remote Pro offers backlit buttons, hands-free voice controls, and a lost remote finder.
- No more fumbling in the dark: See what you’re pressing with backlit buttons.
- Say goodbye to batteries: Keep your remote powered for months on a single charge.
There is an important qualification. Netflix describes the show as inspired by the real Guinness family, but it is a fictionalized drama, not a documentary or a fully factual reconstruction of the family’s history. Treat its historical setting as a foundation for the story rather than a guarantee that every event or relationship occurred as shown.
Choose it if: you enjoy period dramas about wealthy families, business succession and political or social power—and you want several episodes available together rather than a single weekly premiere.
4. Hotel Costiera: Amalfi Coast scenery with a problem-solving hero
Prime Video’s Hotel Costiera is the lighter, more location-driven option in the lineup. Jesse Williams stars as Daniel De Luca, an ex-Marine who works as a problem solver at the Hotel Villa Costiera on Italy’s Amalfi Coast.
Daniel’s job brings a succession of wealthy and demanding hotel guests, but the season also has a continuing mystery: he is searching for Alice, a missing girl who has become entangled in serious trouble. Prime Video lists the first season at six episodes, with its release beginning September 23, 2025.

Individual episodes can deliver self-contained guest problems, while the missing-person storyline supplies a reason to keep watching. It is a good fit for viewers who want action and intrigue without committing to the darker tone of a grim crime drama or the historical weight of House of Guinness.
Choose it if: you want attractive Italian locations, a capable lead, episodic missions and a continuing mystery. Prime Video release dates and catalog access can vary by country, so viewers outside the U.S. should check their local listing.
5. The Golden Bachelor, season 2: the franchise’s senior-dating counterpart returns
ABC’s second season of The Golden Bachelor premiered Wednesday, September 24, with Mel Owens as the new lead. ABC identifies Owens as a 66-year-old former NFL player and lawyer.

- TV, simplified: With setup that only takes minutes, a simple-to-navigate Home Screen, and an uncluttered remote control that does all you need—Roku makes it easier to watch the TV you love.
The series keeps the familiar Bachelor format while focusing on an older cast, giving the franchise a different emotional and life-experience perspective from its younger counterparts. It is the most straightforward choice here for viewers who want relationship-focused reality television rather than scripted drama or documentary crime.
In the U.S., episodes aired on ABC with next-day streaming on Hulu. The next-day qualification matters: Hulu was not presented as the same-night destination in the supplied release information.
Choose it if: you already enjoy the Bachelor format, want a new central contestant and prefer a warm, conversational reality show to a competition built around physical punishment.
6. Cocaine Quarterback: the true-crime documentary pick
Prime Video’s Cocaine Quarterback follows the real story of Owen Hanson, a former USC football player who became involved in international cocaine trafficking and organized crime. The first season premiered September 24, 2025.
This is a documentary series, not a scripted sports drama. Its hook is the contrast between Hanson’s college-football background and his later involvement in a criminal network. That trajectory makes it a natural choice for viewers drawn to stories about identity, ambition, organized crime and the collapse of a public or promising life.
The available Prime Video description supports the broad premise and its true-story framing. It does not, by itself, verify every legal or sentencing detail that may appear in secondary summaries, so those specifics should not be treated as established here.
Choose it if: you want a real-life crime story with a sports-world entry point and prefer investigative nonfiction to dramatized crime.

7. The Law & Order franchise: the most dependable returning-TV choice
The Law & Order recommendation is really a Thursday-night franchise block rather than one series. The original Law & Order returned for season 25 on NBC on September 25, 2025, while Law & Order: Special Victims Unit returned for season 27 the same night. Law & Order: Organized Crime was also part of the Thursday franchise lineup.
NBC’s shows had next-day streaming availability on Peacock according to the supplied release information. The CW’s Law & Order Toronto: Criminal Intent began its second season separately, giving viewers another branch of the format rather than another NBC premiere. The original roundup identified that Toronto installment as available on Hulu.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteHow to choose among the shows
- Original Law & Order: choose the classic police-investigation and courtroom formula.
- Special Victims Unit: choose the more emotionally intense cases and the franchise’s longest-running investigative identity.
- Organized Crime: choose a more serialized crime story.
- Toronto: Criminal Intent: choose a separate international branch of the format, subject to local availability.
Choose the franchise if: you want familiar procedural television, multiple shows to sample and episodes that can be watched in a flexible order. Platform rights and episode availability change, especially across regions, so confirm the current NBC, Peacock, CW or Hulu listing before watching.

Fox’s fourth season of Special Forces: World’s Toughest Test returned September 25, 2025. The season sends celebrity recruits to Morocco for demanding physical and tactical exercises modeled on aspects of Special Forces selection. The roundup’s identified cast includes Teresa Giudice, Jussie Smollett and Kody Brown.
It is best understood as a celebrity endurance competition and social experiment—not as actual military selection, and not as a documentary about active-duty Special Forces operations. The appeal comes from watching recognizable personalities confront exhaustion, fear, teamwork and unfamiliar physical demands.
Episodes aired Thursdays on Fox, with next-day Hulu availability in the U.S.
