December’s biggest Netflix originals
That Christmas — December 4
That Christmas is an animated holiday film built from several connected stories about family, friendship, love, loneliness and Santa Claus—with an unusually large number of turkeys involved. It is based on a trilogy of children’s books by Richard Curtis, who also wrote and executive-produced the film. Simon Otto directed. The voice cast includes Brian Cox, Fiona Shaw, Jodie Whittaker, Bill Nighy and Rhys Darby.
Black Doves — December 5
Keira Knightley stars as Helen Webb, a politician’s wife who has secretly worked as a professional spy for 10 years. When her lover is killed, Helen’s organization turns to her old friend Sam Young, played by Ben Whishaw, to protect her. Created and written by Joe Barton, the six-episode spy thriller uses London at Christmas as the setting for its personal and political intrigue.
A Nonsense Christmas with Sabrina Carpenter — December 6
This musical variety special places Sabrina Carpenter at the center of the holiday slate. December 6 also added the biblical coming-of-age epic Mary, the documentary Biggest Heist Ever, and the films Camp Crasher and Echoes of the Past.
Maria — December 11
Angelina Jolie plays opera singer Maria Callas in Maria, a biographical drama directed by Pablo Larraín. It was one of Netflix’s principal original films for the month.

Carry-On — December 13
Carry-On stars Taron Egerton, Jason Bateman and Sofia Carson in an airport thriller. Netflix reported that the film opened with 42 million views and reached the Top 10 in 93 countries. Those figures came from Netflix’s own December 17 Top 10 report; they are Netflix-reported performance figures rather than independent audience measurements. At that point, Netflix described the opening as its biggest film opening of 2024.
The Six Triple Eight — December 20
Tyler Perry’s The Six Triple Eight is based on the 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion, the first and only all-Black, all-female battalion stationed overseas during World War II. The historical drama arrived shortly before Christmas.
Squid Game, season 2 — December 26
In season 2, Seong Gi-hun—Player 456—returns three years after winning the first game. He is determined to find the people behind the competition and bring it to an end. Netflix announced that a third and final season was planned for 2025.

The franchise also expanded beyond the series. Squid Game: Unleashed, a Netflix mobile game, launched on December 17. Netflix’s broader promotional activity included Puma apparel, Crocs footwear, collectibles and Netflix Shop merchandise. Those products and the game are franchise extensions, not replacements for season 2 and not required to watch it.
Licensed movies and returning catalog series
December’s additions were not limited to Netflix-produced programming. The month also added films such as Burlesque, Daddy Day Care, Little, Midway, Project X, We’re the Millers, Zero Dark Thirty, The Dead Don’t Die and Mad Max: Fury Road.
Licensed and returning television additions included Bunk’d, Top Chef seasons from Boston, Kentucky and Seattle, The Equalizer seasons 1–3, Project Runway seasons 18–19, Flipping Out seasons 6–8, Evil season 3 and The Millionaire Matchmaker seasons 5–7. Rights can expire, so these additions should be treated as time-specific catalog entries rather than permanent Netflix fixtures.
Live programming, documentaries, comedy and the game release
Netflix’s December lineup extended beyond scripted films and series:

Titles leaving Netflix in December 2024
If you were planning a December catch-up, several departures made timing important. The reported U.S. removals included:
- December 1: A larger group including Ali, Point Break, Troy and What to Expect When You’re Expecting.
- December 16: Darkest Hour and Mortal Kombat.
- December 20: Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken.
- December 25: The Flash.
- December 31: Royal Pains, seasons 1–8.
Removal dates were also market-specific. A title leaving the U.S. catalog did not necessarily leave Netflix on the same date everywhere else.
How to use this calendar
- For family viewing, start with That Christmas on December 4. The animated format and interconnected holiday stories make it the clearest seasonal pick.
- For prestige drama, choose Maria or The Six Triple Eight. The former centers on Maria Callas; the latter dramatizes a rarely represented World War II battalion.
- For suspense, choose Black Doves or Carry-On. The former is a serialized spy thriller, while the latter is a contained airport thriller.
- For the major franchise event, save December 26 for Squid Game season 2. If you want the companion game, Squid Game: Unleashed arrived nine days earlier.
- For catalog catch-up, check the departure dates first. Movies such as Darkest Hour, Mortal Kombat, The Flash and Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken had reported December removals.

The Bottom Line
December 2024’s Netflix lineup was led by Black Doves, Carry-On, The Six Triple Eight and the return of Squid Game, with That Christmas and live NFL games supplying the holiday programming. Because this was a U.S.-oriented, rights-dependent calendar, viewers elsewhere should confirm each title in their local Netflix catalog.
