Spotify is back after a Sunday morning outage that disrupted playlists, playback, and app access on Sunday, September 29, 2024. The service recovered after approximately three hours, while Downdetector recorded more than 40,000 U.S. reports at the peak. Spotify acknowledged the incident but did not disclose a technical cause in available reporting.

The outage was widespread enough to affect both desktop and mobile experiences. The incident is historical, so current Spotify problems require fresh status verification rather than relying on this September 2024 report.

Key takeaways

  • Spotify recovered from an approximately three-hour outage on Sunday, September 29, 2024.
  • Downdetector recorded more than 40,000 U.S. outage reports at the peak, but the figure does not represent confirmed unique users.
  • Users reported playlists failing to load, interrupted playback, unresponsive apps, and “Something went wrong” errors.
  • Spotify acknowledged the incident and later said, “Everything’s looking much better now!”
  • The available contemporaneous reporting did not establish a technical cause, and no hardware purchase would have fixed the platform-side disruption.

What happened during the Spotify outage?

Spotify experienced a widespread service disruption on Sunday, September 29, 2024. The outage affected multiple experiences, including desktop and mobile apps, rather than pointing to a problem with one phone, headphone, router, operating system, or account.

Reuters’ contemporaneous report said the disruption lasted approximately three hours and that Downdetector reports in the United States peaked above 40,000. By 3 p.m. Eastern Time, fewer than 600 U.S. reports remained.

The Associated Press independently reported that more than 40,000 people had reported Spotify problems. The AP described failed track playback, an unresponsive phone app for some users, and a “Something went wrong” message for some desktop users.

What problems did Spotify users report?

The reported symptoms were consistent with a service outage affecting Spotify’s systems:

  • Playlists failed to load or loaded unusually slowly.
  • Music stopped playing unexpectedly.
  • Some users could access only recently played material.
  • Some desktop users saw a “Something went wrong” error.
  • Some mobile users found the phone app unresponsive.
  • More than one Spotify client, including desktop and mobile experiences, was affected.

Those symptoms support describing the event as a Spotify outage. They do not establish that a device, internet router, headphones, account, or operating-system version caused the failure.

How many people were affected by the Spotify outage?

More than 40,000 U.S. Downdetector reports were recorded at the peak, according to Reuters’ September 29, 2024 report. The number describes user-submitted incident reports, not a confirmed count of unique people affected. One person can generate multiple reports, and Downdetector reports do not measure every affected user.

Spotify reported 626 million monthly active users and 246 million subscribers for the second quarter of 2024 in its official Q2 2024 earnings announcement. Those company-wide figures provide scale but are not the number of people affected by the September 29 outage.

There is therefore no supported basis for saying that the outage was caused by a hack, cyberattack, cloud-provider failure, software update, server failure, malware, or a problem with users’ devices. The most accurate description is a temporary Spotify service disruption with an undisclosed cause.

What should you do if Spotify is still not playing songs?

If Spotify continues failing after the broader outage has cleared, first check Spotify’s official ongoing-issues guidance. If Spotify reports no active problem, troubleshoot the app or connection using Spotify’s support paths for playback problems, app updates, and reinstalling.

  1. Check whether Spotify lists an ongoing issue.
  2. Try the service on another available client, such as the desktop or mobile app, to determine whether the problem is limited to one client.
  3. Check the internet connection and retry playback.
  4. Update Spotify if an update is available.
  5. Reinstall the app only if the problem continues and Spotify’s support guidance recommends that step.

Reinstalling Spotify or replacing headphones, speakers, phones, or routers is not evidence-based treatment for the historical September 29 outage. The incident affected Spotify’s service across clients, and the available reports do not show that hardware changes restored it.

Was Spotify down on Sunday morning?

Yes. Spotify was broadly disrupted on Sunday, September 29, 2024, with playlist-loading failures, playback interruptions, app problems, and error messages reported in the United States. Spotify later indicated that service was improving, and the outage had substantially subsided by the afternoon.

Because this incident occurred in 2024, readers checking Spotify now should not treat this report as a live status update. A new Spotify problem requires fresh verification through Spotify’s current status or support information and current user-report data.

The Bottom Line

Spotify is back after a Sunday morning outage that lasted approximately three hours on September 29, 2024. More than 40,000 U.S. Downdetector reports marked the peak, but that was not a confirmed unique-user count. Spotify acknowledged the problem, later reported improvement, and did not disclose a technical cause in the available reports.
