The College Football Playoff’s official schedule identified ESPN as the platform for the quarterfinal window. How streaming access worked during the live game
Downloading the ESPN app did not by itself provide free access to the live Rose Bowl broadcast. ESPN’s support information explains that live ESPN networks, events and replays generally require authentication through an affiliated television or internet provider, either in the ESPN app, on ESPN.com or through a supported over-the-top viewing experience.
- Open the ESPN app or ESPN.com.
- Choose the sign-in or provider-authentication option when prompted.
- Select your participating TV or internet provider.
- Enter the provider account credentials associated with an eligible package.
- Open the ESPN event or channel once authentication is complete.
The exact screens and labels can vary by device and provider. A successful ESPN account login is not necessarily the same as having access to a live ESPN network; the provider authorization is the important part.
Could YouTube TV stream the Rose Bowl?
Yes—YouTube TV was a valid example of the type of live-TV service that could provide ESPN access. YouTube TV’s help documentation identifies ESPN among its national networks and explains that subscribers can use ESPN’s TV Everywhere authentication through the ESPN website or app.
That does not mean YouTube TV was the only possible route, or that its current channel lineup, plan requirements or pricing should be assumed from the 2025 broadcast. Live-TV packages change by date, market and plan. For another game, verify directly that the service carries ESPN and that the selected plan supports the provider login required by ESPN.

What about ESPN+?
Do not assume that an ESPN+ subscription alone included this particular Rose Bowl broadcast. The available event information establishes the ESPN network broadcast and the need for affiliated-provider authentication, but it does not establish that a standalone ESPN+ subscription carried Ohio State vs. Oregon.
ESPN+ can include separately listed college-sports events, but network-televised games and ESPN+ programming are not interchangeable. An event-specific ESPN listing is the safest way to determine whether a future game is included with ESPN+.
Can you watch the game now?
Not as a live broadcast. The January 1, 2025 viewing window has ended. As of August 11, 2026, the most reliable options are:
- Official ESPN highlights: ESPN’s official video channels include a legitimate highlights route for the game.
- College Football Playoff recap: The CFP’s official recap confirms the quarterfinal result and Ohio State’s advancement.
- Ohio State game center and final statistics: Ohio State’s official materials preserve the score, kickoff, venue, attendance and player statistics.
Be cautious with pages that still use phrases such as “watch live,” “live stream” or “free broadcast.” Those labels may refer to an old listing, a highlight clip or an unauthorized upload rather than an active official stream.

Do you need a streaming device?
No. A phone, computer or compatible smart-TV app may be enough if you have an eligible ESPN provider login. A separate device can be useful if you want to display an authenticated ESPN stream on a television. For example, a Roku streaming device is relevant hardware because ESPN supports Roku, but the device does not include ESPN access, a live-TV package or a provider subscription. Device compatibility and app support can change, so check the current ESPN and Roku requirements before buying.
Disclosure: A device recommendation may lead to a commission if the site later adds an approved retailer link. The hardware is optional and does not replace the provider authentication required for live ESPN content.
