How to watch ‘The Walking Dead’ shows in chronological order: the practical guide

The best practical chronological order starts with Fear the Walking Dead Seasons 1–3, moves through The Walking Dead and later Fear, then places World Beyond before the final flagship episodes and The Ones Who Live. Watch Tales separately, followed by Daryl Dixon and Dead City.

How to watch ‘The Walking Dead’ shows in chronological order: begin with Fear the Walking Dead Seasons 1–3, followed by The Walking Dead Seasons 1–8, Fear Seasons 4–8, an optional Season 9 split around World Beyond, then The Ones Who Live, Daryl Dixon, and Dead City. Watch Tales separately because its six anthology episodes occupy different timeline positions.

This is the best practical series-level chronology for the television universe, not an official definitive episode order. Flashbacks, overlapping stories, anthology episodes, and time jumps make a perfectly separated timeline impractical for a normal first watch.

Key takeaways

  • Fear the Walking Dead Seasons 1–3 come first in the broad in-universe timeline because they cover the outbreak-era collapse.
  • The Walking Dead Seasons 1–11 form the television universe’s central storyline; AMC announced that the flagship series would end with an expanded 11th season of 24 episodes.
  • Fear Seasons 4–8 belong after The Walking Dead Season 8 because the later seasons become a continuation branch connected to the flagship story.
  • World Beyond is useful before The Ones Who Live because it expands the Civic Republic Military and related communities.
  • Tales of the Walking Dead has no single chronological position because AMC describes it as a six-episode anthology of standalone stories.
  • Daryl Dixon and Dead City follow the original series; the practical order is The Ones Who Live, Daryl Dixon, then Dead City, although the exact episode-by-episode relationship is not fully clean.

What is the chronological order of The Walking Dead shows?

The practical chronological order is the 10-part sequence below, with Tales of the Walking Dead kept outside the main block. This is a series-level viewing order rather than an official definitive episode-by-episode timeline, because the franchise includes flashbacks, overlapping events, anthology episodes, and major time jumps.

The order includes the full flagship run. AMC’s September 9, 2020 announcement described The Walking Dead as ending with an expanded two-year 11th season spanning 24 episodes.

South Park: Seasons 16-20 [Blu-Ray, Collector's Edition]
  • Collector's Edition
  • Complete series 16-20
Order Show and episodes Why it goes here
1 Fear the Walking Dead — Seasons 1–3 The outbreak-era branch and the earliest broad stage of the television timeline.
2 The Walking Dead — Seasons 1–8 The core survivor story and the foundation for the later shows.
3 Fear the Walking Dead — Seasons 4–8 The later Fear storyline, which functions as a connected continuation rather than simply more prequel material.
4 The Walking Dead — Season 9, Episodes 1–5 The first part of Season 9 before its major internal time jump.
5 The Walking Dead: World Beyond — Seasons 1–2 Later-era mythology involving the Civic Republic Military and its connected communities.
6 The Walking Dead — Season 9, Episode 6 through Season 11 The post-jump flagship storyline, including the end of the original series.
7 The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live — Season 1 The Rick-and-Michonne continuation that follows the flagship story.
8 The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon — Seasons 1–3 Daryl’s post-flagship journey through France and Europe.
9 The Walking Dead: Dead City — Seasons 1–3 Maggie and Negan’s later story in post-apocalyptic Manhattan.
10 Tales of the Walking Dead — watch separately The anthology’s individual episodes occupy different points in the timeline, so the series cannot be placed accurately as one block.

Current scope: This order treats Daryl Dixon through Season 3 and Dead City through Season 3 as part of the available series-level chronology researched on August 13, 2026. AMC announced that Daryl Dixon Season 3 premiered on September 7, 2025, while AMC announced Dead City Season 3 for July 26, 2026.

Why does Fear the Walking Dead come before The Walking Dead?

Fear the Walking Dead Seasons 1–3 come before The Walking Dead in broad chronological order because Fear begins during the collapse of society. The show follows survivors as the outbreak develops and communities begin to fail, giving viewers the earliest television-universe view of the apocalypse. AMC’s official Fear the Walking Dead series page describes the show as a story of survival during the collapse and the attempts to rebuild relationships and communities.

Only the first three Fear seasons should be treated as the early-apocalypse section of this practical order. Fear Seasons 4–8 belong later, after The Walking Dead Season 8, because the series becomes increasingly connected to the flagship continuity through Morgan and other cross-series mythology.

That distinction prevents a common mistake: watching all eight Fear seasons first and assuming that every Fear storyline is a prequel. Fear Seasons 1–3 are the early branch; Fear Seasons 4–8 are a later continuation branch.

Where does The Walking Dead: World Beyond fit?

Place World Beyond after The Walking Dead Season 9, Episodes 1–5, and before The Walking Dead Season 9, Episode 6, if you want the closest practical series-level chronology. World Beyond follows young people who grew up inside a surviving post-apocalyptic civilization, making the show a window into a later stage of the world rather than another outbreak-era prequel.

World Beyond is especially useful before The Ones Who Live because it expands the Civic Republic Military, commonly abbreviated as CRM, and related organized communities. AMC’s overview of organized communities in The Walking Dead universe provides wider context for the institutions and settlements that connect the later mythology.

  • Hawaii Five-0 (Complete Series 1-10) - 54-Disc Box Set
  • Hawaii Five-0 (Complete Series 1-10) - 54-Disc Box Set

The World Beyond placement is practical rather than an official AMC master order. Viewers who prefer uninterrupted character momentum can finish The Walking Dead first and watch World Beyond afterward; viewers who want CRM context before The Ones Who Live should watch World Beyond before that Rick-and-Michonne continuation.

Do you need to split The Walking Dead Season 9?

No, splitting Season 9 is optional. Split Season 9 after Episode 5 only if timeline precision matters more to you than uninterrupted dramatic flow.

Viewing choice Exact sequence Best for Trade-off
Chronological split Season 9, Episodes 1–5 → World Beyond Seasons 1–2 → Season 9, Episode 6 through Season 11 Viewers who want World Beyond placed around the flagship show’s major time jump. The flagship story is interrupted just as Season 9 is developing its own momentum.
Uninterrupted flagship run Finish The Walking Dead Season 9, then Seasons 10–11, before moving to World Beyond First-time viewers who value character arcs and dramatic pacing. World Beyond’s CRM context arrives later than it does in the practical chronology.

The reason for the split is Season 9’s internal time jump. Episodes 1–5 belong before the jump, while Episode 6 begins the later phase. The split does not change the content of the season; it only changes when you encounter World Beyond during a full-universe rewatch.

Is Tales of the Walking Dead part of the main timeline?

Yes, Tales of the Walking Dead belongs to the wider universe, but it is not one chronological block. AMC announced Tales as a six-episode anthology of standalone stories involving both new and established characters. Each episode can occupy a different point in the apocalypse timeline.

The practical choice is to watch Tales after completing the main chronological run, or to watch it separately after The Walking Dead. A completionist rewatch can place individual episodes into an episode-specific timeline, but treating all six episodes as one slot would create a false sense of precision.

Watching Tales separately also avoids interrupting the longer arcs in Fear, The Walking Dead, World Beyond, and the character continuations. The anthology works better as a set of additional perspectives than as a single stop between two seasons.

What order is best for a first-time viewer?

For most first-time viewers, the simpler show-by-show order is better than strict chronology. The simpler order preserves each series’ internal pacing and avoids stopping The Walking Dead during Season 9.

  1. The Walking Dead — Seasons 1–11
  2. Fear the Walking Dead — Seasons 1–8
  3. The Walking Dead: World Beyond — Seasons 1–2
  4. Tales of the Walking Dead
  5. The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live — Season 1
  6. The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon — Seasons 1–3
  7. The Walking Dead: Dead City — Seasons 1–3

The two choices solve different problems:

Decision factor Practical chronological order First-watch show-by-show order
Timeline accuracy Higher: separates early Fear, later Fear, the Season 9 time jump, and later continuations. Lower: keeps every show intact rather than placing each branch at its broad timeline position.
Narrative momentum Lower: switches shows and interrupts Season 9. Higher: completes the flagship and each spinoff without mid-season detours.
Spoiler control World Beyond arrives before The Ones Who Live, supplying more CRM context. The Walking Dead finale remains intact before the spinoffs extend its characters.
Completionist effort Highest: requires the Season 9 split and separate handling of Tales. Lower: watch each listed series from its first season to its last.
Best audience Returning viewers and timeline-focused rewatches. First-time viewers who want the clearest dramatic progression.

There is no need to force a single answer on every viewer. Choose the chronological order if the development of the fictional world is the priority. Choose the show-by-show order if character continuity and emotional pacing matter more.

How should you watch The Ones Who Live, Daryl Dixon, and Dead City?

Use The Ones Who Live first, Daryl Dixon second, and Dead City third for the cleanest broad order after the original series. The individual continuations are connected to the flagship ending, but their precise episode-level relationship is less clearly documented than the earlier series-level order.

1. The Ones Who Live

The Ones Who Live continues the stories of Rick and Michonne. AMC announced that the series premiered on February 25, 2024, and its official series page presents it as the Rick-and-Michonne continuation. Watch it after The Walking Dead Season 11 if you want the original series’ ending to land before the continuation explains what happened next.

2. Daryl Dixon

Daryl Dixon follows Daryl after he leaves the established communities and reaches France, expanding the universe beyond the United States. AMC announced the third season’s premiere date as September 7, 2025, so the practical order here includes Seasons 1–3 as of the August 13, 2026 research date.

3. Dead City

Dead City follows Maggie and Negan years after their earlier story and moves them into post-apocalyptic Manhattan. AMC’s official Dead City first-look coverage establishes the Manhattan setting, while AMC announced the third season’s July 26, 2026 premiere.

Daryl Dixon before Dead City is the recommended practical order, not a claim that every event in the two shows has been placed in a definitive shared episode timeline. Both shows are best treated as post-original-series continuations once the flagship story is complete.

Where can you watch the shows?

Check AMC’s current catalog and the services available in your region before starting, because streaming rights, prices, catalogs, and physical-media stock can change. AMC identifies AMC+ as a viewing destination for Walking Dead programming, including Fear the Walking Dead and other franchise shows; the official AMC browse page is the safest starting point for current catalog information.

Availability is not automatically identical across countries, and a title listed on an AMC series page does not guarantee the same subscription access in every region. Verify the show, season, episode, price, and regional rights at publication or purchase time rather than relying on an old streaming list.

Can you own the original series offline?

The Walking Dead complete series Blu-ray is relevant if you want to own the flagship show offline, but the collection covers the original 11-season series rather than Fear, World Beyond, Tales, The Ones Who Live, Daryl Dixon, or Dead City. Check the current retailer listing for inventory, region compatibility, and included extras before buying.

Do not describe that product as a complete Walking Dead universe set. A complete collection of the original series is different from a collection containing every spinoff, and the distinction matters for anyone planning the full chronological rewatch.

Common watch-order mistakes to avoid

  • Watching all of Fear before The Walking Dead: only Fear Seasons 1–3 occupy the early-apocalypse position in the recommended broad order.
  • Calling the order official and definitive: the list is a practical series-level chronology that accommodates overlapping narratives and time jumps.
  • Treating the Season 9 split as mandatory: the split is for timeline precision; first-time viewers can finish the flagship uninterrupted.
  • Putting all of Tales in one precise slot: the six anthology episodes have different timeline positions.
  • Skipping World Beyond before The Ones Who Live without considering the CRM story: World Beyond adds useful context for the Civic Republic Military and connected communities.
  • Assuming a flagship Blu-ray includes the spinoffs: the documented complete-series product is for The Walking Dead’s original 11-season run, not the entire franchise.
  • Trusting an old streaming list: verify current regional catalogs, prices, rights, and inventory before watching or buying.
