YouTube TV’s ABC and ESPN blackout ended on November 14, 2025, when Disney and YouTube TV reached a multi-year agreement. The original catch was an interim proposal: YouTube TV offered to restore ABC and ESPN indefinitely during negotiations, rather than restore ABC for Election Day only. ESPN Unlimited’s launch status remains date-sensitive.
The headline refers to a November 3, 2025 moment in the dispute, not the current channel lineup. The final agreement restored Disney’s wider linear portfolio, while the planned ESPN Unlimited benefit still requires an up-to-date official confirmation.
Key takeaways
- ABC and ESPN returned to YouTube TV on November 14, 2025, after Disney and YouTube TV reached a multi-year distribution agreement.
- The original “catch” was that YouTube TV proposed an interim restoration of ABC and the ESPN networks while negotiations continued, rather than a permanent settlement.
- Disney’s final agreement covered its wider linear portfolio, including ABC, all ESPN networks, Freeform, FX Networks, and National Geographic channels.
- Disney said ESPN Unlimited would be available to YouTube TV subscribers at no additional cost, but YouTube’s February 2026 announcement described the service as “coming this fall,” so launch status requires current verification.
- An antenna can replace pay-TV reception for a local ABC station where over-the-air reception is available, but an antenna cannot replace ESPN or other pay-TV sports networks.
What was the catch with YouTube TV bringing back ABC and ESPN?
The catch was that YouTube TV’s November 3, 2025 proposal was an interim restoration, not a signed permanent deal: YouTube TV rejected Disney’s request to restore ABC only for Election Day and instead offered to restore ABC and the ESPN networks indefinitely while negotiations continued. Disney and YouTube TV resolved the dispute on November 14, 2025.
The wording of the original headline is therefore historical. As of the authoritative research date, August 13, 2026, ABC and ESPN were no longer missing from YouTube TV. The channels had returned under a multi-year agreement.

Is ABC back on YouTube TV?
Yes. ABC returned to YouTube TV on November 14, 2025, when Disney and YouTube TV announced a multi-year distribution agreement. The Associated Press reported that the agreement ended a blackout lasting more than two weeks, with channels returning over the course of November 14. Disney’s official agreement announcement confirmed that ABC and the rest of Disney’s linear network portfolio would be restored.
The final agreement was broader than ABC. Disney said the restored portfolio included all ESPN networks, Disney-branded channels, Freeform, FX Networks, and National Geographic channels. A multi-year agreement reduces the immediate risk of another interruption, but it does not guarantee that future carriage negotiations will never cause a blackout.
When did ESPN return to YouTube TV?
ESPN and Disney’s other affected networks began returning to YouTube TV on November 14, 2025, after the companies reached their multi-year agreement. The blackout began after YouTube TV’s agreement with Disney expired on October 30, 2025.
The dispute involved more than a technical channel outage. Disney described the disagreement as a fight over rates, terms, and packaging flexibility, while YouTube TV said it was seeking fair pricing and flexibility for members. Disney also emphasized the importance of its sports programming to viewers.
In its October 31, 2025 statement, The Walt Disney Company reported that its networks’ viewership among YouTube TV households had increased by more than 15% year over year, measured by gross minutes viewed dating back to 2020. Disney also reported an average audience advantage of 3.5 million viewers for ABC college football compared with other networks, using the period and methodology described in Disney’s release. Those figures are Disney’s own measurements and should not be treated as independent industry statistics.

What happened during the ABC and ESPN blackout?
| Date | What happened | What it meant for viewers |
|---|---|---|
| October 30, 2025 | YouTube TV’s agreement with Disney expired. | Disney-owned networks, including ABC and ESPN, went dark on YouTube TV. |
| October 31, 2025 | Disney published its explanation of the dispute and named alternative distributors. | Viewers were directed toward other providers and over-the-air broadcast options. |
| November 3, 2025 | Disney asked YouTube TV to restore ABC for Election Day. | YouTube TV rejected a one-day ABC restoration as potentially confusing. |
| November 3, 2025 | YouTube TV proposed restoring ABC and the ESPN networks indefinitely while talks continued. | The proposal could have restored access immediately, but it was not yet a final distribution agreement. |
| November 14, 2025 | Disney and YouTube TV announced a multi-year agreement. | ABC, ESPN, and Disney’s wider linear portfolio began returning to subscribers. |
YouTube described the problem with a one-day restoration in an official November 3 statement: “But unfortunately, your proposal would permit us to return Disney’s ABC stations only for a day and will cause customer confusion among those who may briefly see ABC on YouTube TV only to lose it again shortly after.” — The YouTube Team, November 3, 2025. YouTube’s full response also described the proposal to restore the ESPN networks while negotiations continued.
What does the YouTube TV and Disney agreement include?
The November 14 agreement restored Disney’s full linear network portfolio and added several future-facing distribution provisions. The agreement said ESPN Unlimited would be made available to YouTube TV subscribers at no additional cost, while selected programming could appear inside YouTube TV.
| Agreement element | What the available announcement says | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| ABC | Restored to YouTube TV subscribers. | Local affiliate availability can still depend on the subscriber’s market. |
| ESPN networks | Restored as part of Disney’s full linear portfolio. | The agreement does not make YouTube TV permanently immune from future carriage disputes. |
| Other Disney networks | Includes Disney-branded channels, Freeform, FX Networks, and National Geographic channels. | The agreement covers linear network distribution, not every separate streaming entitlement. |
| ESPN Unlimited | Disney said access would be available to YouTube TV subscribers at no additional cost. | YouTube’s February 9, 2026 announcement described ESPN Unlimited as “coming this fall”; launch and eligibility should be rechecked before publication. |
| Additional packages | The agreement mentioned selected programming, genre-specific packages, and the ability to include the Disney+, Hulu Bundle in select YouTube offerings. | Specific plan availability, pricing, and eligibility can vary and require current confirmation. |
YouTube’s February 9, 2026 plan announcement placed ESPN Unlimited in its Sports Plan discussion but described availability as coming in fall 2026. Because the research timestamp is August 13, 2026, readers should not be told that ESPN Unlimited is already active without a newer official launch confirmation.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWhy did YouTube TV lose ABC and ESPN?
YouTube TV lost ABC and ESPN because the distributor’s agreement with Disney expired and the companies had not reached new terms by October 30, 2025. Disney said YouTube TV had not accepted what Disney described as fair rates and terms. YouTube TV argued that it was pursuing fair pricing and flexibility for its members.
Carriage disputes are negotiated distribution disagreements, not necessarily permanent channel removals. The 2025 dispute illustrates why viewers should distinguish between a blackout caused by an expired agreement and a final decision to abandon a network. The November 14 multi-year agreement restored the channels after more than two weeks.

How could viewers watch ABC without YouTube TV?
Viewers could use another live-TV distributor, an over-the-air antenna, or eligible network-app access, but each option solves a different part of the problem.
| Option | ABC | ESPN | Best use | What to check |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Another live-TV distributor | Usually depends on the local ABC affiliate and ZIP code. | May include ESPN, ESPN2, ESPNews, ESPNU, and conference networks depending on the plan. | Replacing most or all of a YouTube TV package. | Local lineup, sports channels, price, introductory terms, DVR, streams, and cancellation policy. |
| indoor HDTV antenna | Can receive a local ABC station over the air where the signal reaches the home. | No. | Keeping local broadcast channels during a pay-TV blackout. | Location, transmitter distance, building materials, placement, and reception conditions. |
| Network website or app | May work when the viewer has an eligible authenticated TV subscription. | Eligibility and content vary by network and subscription. | Accessing selected network content with existing credentials. | Whether the underlying subscription still includes the network entitlement. |
| Direct ESPN service | No local ABC replacement. | Potentially provides ESPN programming subject to the service and eligibility. | Supplementing or replacing some sports access. | Launch status, plan eligibility, price, blackout rules, and included programming. |
Can an antenna replace YouTube TV for ABC?
An antenna can replace pay-TV reception for a local ABC broadcast station when the station’s over-the-air signal is available at the viewer’s home, but an antenna cannot replace ESPN. The FCC explains that viewers can use an antenna and a digital television receiver to watch local broadcast stations when a station is no longer available through a pay-TV service.

Reception is not guaranteed: geography, distance from the transmitter, walls, windows, interference, and antenna placement all matter. An antenna does not provide ESPN, ESPN2, ESPNews, ESPNU, conference networks, or other pay-TV sports programming.
Do not choose an antenna based on a generic “best” claim unless independent testing supports that claim. The appropriate purchase depends on the local broadcast environment, so readers should check local station coverage and be prepared to adjust placement.
Can YouTube TV credentials unlock ABC during a blackout?
YouTube TV credentials can sign in to selected network websites and apps when the subscriber’s package includes the relevant entitlement, but authenticated access is not a workaround for a distributor-wide carriage blackout if YouTube TV no longer has the network rights. YouTube TV’s Help Center lists ABC among supported network destinations and explains the sign-in process.

- Open the supported network website or app.
- Select the option to sign in with a TV provider.
- Choose YouTube TV and enter the YouTube TV account credentials.
- Confirm that the account’s current plan includes the requested network.
The final step is decisive. A TV Everywhere login verifies an existing subscription entitlement; the login does not independently restore a channel removed during a carriage dispute.
What are the best YouTube TV alternatives with ABC and ESPN?
The best alternative depends on whether the viewer needs local ABC, live ESPN sports, or a full replacement for YouTube TV. Disney named DirecTV, Fios, Fubo, Hulu + Live TV, Spectrum, Xfinity, and other providers as alternative distribution outlets during the 2025 blackout. No provider should be assumed to offer identical local coverage, pricing, or sports rights.
| Alternative category | What it may solve | What must be verified |
|---|---|---|
| Full live-TV streaming service | ABC and ESPN in one replacement package, where available. | Local ABC affiliate, exact ESPN channels, regional sports, monthly price, DVR, streams, and cancellation terms. |
| Traditional cable or fiber provider | Local broadcast and pay-TV sports channels, often with equipment and bundled service. | Serviceability at the address, contract or promotional pricing, equipment charges, and channel tier. |
| Over-the-air antenna plus a separate sports service | Local ABC through the antenna and sports through a separate subscription. | Local reception, the sports service’s exact rights, combined monthly cost, and device compatibility. |
| Direct network or sports service | Selected ESPN programming without a full live-TV bundle, if eligible. | Launch status, price, content rights, regional restrictions, and whether the service includes every desired ESPN network. |
For readers comparing services after a future blackout, a live-TV service comparison should begin with the local ABC affiliate and the exact ESPN channels needed, not with a national channel-count claim. Current availability and commercial terms must be checked by ZIP code and publication date.
What should readers know about ESPN Unlimited?
ESPN Unlimited was the remaining date-sensitive part of the agreement at the August 13, 2026 research timestamp. Disney said YouTube TV subscribers would receive access at no additional cost, but YouTube’s February 9 announcement described the service as coming in fall 2026. That means launch status, eligibility, plan names, pricing, and included programming must be verified from a current official announcement before publication.
ESPN Unlimited should not be described as already available solely because the November 2025 agreement mentioned it. The agreement established the intended distribution arrangement; the later YouTube announcement supplied the then-current timing, not a completed-launch confirmation.

What changed from the original headline?
The original November 4, 2025 report described a live negotiation in which YouTube TV was ready to restore ABC and ESPN indefinitely, with the condition that negotiations would continue. The accurate current framing is that the blackout ended on November 14, 2025, under a multi-year agreement, while ESPN Unlimited remained a date-sensitive future feature in the available research.
Readers searching for “Is ABC back on YouTube TV?” or “When will ESPN return to YouTube TV?” should therefore receive a direct answer: both returned on November 14, 2025. Readers searching for “What was the catch with bringing ABC back for Election Day?” should understand that the catch referred to the proposed duration and scope of an interim restoration, not a continuing ABC or ESPN blackout.

The original catch was YouTube TV’s proposed interim restoration while negotiations continued, not a permanent channel guarantee.
