The weekend of March 29–31, 2024, offered 11 notable new streaming and on-demand picks, ranging from Holocaust-era historical drama and literary adaptation to crime thrillers, fantasy adventure, horror comedy, stand-up, sports drama and family animation. The headline mentioned Netflix and Hulu, but the full list also included Disney+, Prime Video, Peacock, AMC, Paramount+ with Showtime and digital rental platforms.
This is a dated roundup of what was available—or about to premiere—in that specific weekend, not a guide to current catalog availability. One important timing exception is A Gentleman in Moscow: Paramount’s series page listed its first episode for April 1, just after the weekend, so it was an imminent watch rather than a title already available throughout March 29–31.
Where the 11 titles fit in the March 29–31 weekend
Availability below reflects the U.S.-oriented listings and launch information available for that weekend. Streaming rights, rental stores and regional catalogs change frequently, so these dates should not be treated as current availability claims.
| Title | Format | Service or access route | Weekend timing |
|---|---|---|---|
| Parish | Series | AMC, including access through live-TV services such as Sling or Fubo | Weekend pick |
| A Gentleman in Moscow | Series | Paramount+ with Showtime | First episode listed for April 1 |
| We Were the Lucky Ones | Limited series | Hulu | Streaming during the weekend |
| Renegade Nell | Series | Disney+ | All episodes from March 29 |
| American Rust: Broken Justice | Season 2 | Prime Video | Premiere on March 28 |
| Tig Notaro: Hello Again | Stand-up special | Prime Video | Weekend pick |
| Lisa Frankenstein | Movie | Peacock | Arrived March 29 |
| When You Finish Saving the World | Movie | Netflix | Streaming during the weekend |
| The Beautiful Game | Movie | Netflix | Streaming during the weekend |
| Minions: The Rise of Gru | Movie | Prime Video | Weekend pick |
| Imaginary | Movie | PVOD, including Amazon rental or purchase | Digital rental or purchase, not a subscription listing |
Because this lineup was divided across so many services, a streaming discovery service could also help compare where each title was listed, especially if you were deciding which subscription or rental option made sense for one weekend. Always confirm the service and region before signing up or paying.

New TV shows and specials
1. Parish — AMC
Best for: viewers who want a contemporary crime thriller led by a familiar prestige-TV actor.
Giancarlo Esposito stars as Gracian “Gray” Parish, a New Orleans luxury-car-service owner whose life begins to collapse after his son is murdered and his business fails. Those personal tragedies pull Gray back toward the violent criminal world he had tried to leave behind.
The central attraction is Esposito in a role that gives him a different kind of criminal-drama showcase from his best-known work in Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul. While much of the weekend’s television lineup looked backward to earlier periods of history, Parish supplied the modern, street-level counterpoint: a family man forced to negotiate with dangerous people when ordinary life stops being possible.
At the time of the roundup, AMC access could also be obtained through live-TV aggregators such as Sling or Fubo. That is different from claiming that the series was included in every standalone streaming package.

Best for: readers who enjoy literary adaptations, contained historical dramas and character-driven stories.
Ewan McGregor plays Count Alexander Rostov, an aristocrat stripped of his title after the Russian Revolution and confined to an attic room inside Moscow’s Hotel Metropol. Though his physical world becomes extremely small, Rostov builds friendships, finds romance and gradually develops a new understanding of community.
The series is adapted from Amor Towles’s bestselling novel, making it the clearest book-to-screen pairing in this weekend’s list. If you prefer to encounter the story in print first, read Amor Towles’s novel A Gentleman in Moscow before watching the adaptation.
There is a timing detail worth preserving: Paramount’s official series information identified the first episode’s premiere as April 1, 2024. In other words, this was a “watch next” recommendation attached to the weekend, not a title that should be described as fully available on March 29.
3. We Were the Lucky Ones — Hulu
Best for: viewers seeking a serious historical limited series centered on family survival and reunion.
Based on Georgia Hunter’s New York Times bestselling novel, the series follows a Jewish European family separated at the beginning of World War II. Its members hide, face deportation and attempt to survive while searching for ways to reconnect.

- Quick and Seamless Video Transfer: With the latest HDMI technology, stream or transfer videos without interruptions, and witness the power of up to 48 Gbps in bandwidth, ensuring consistently clear content.
- Lasts Longer, Performs Stronger: This cable is designed to withstand up to 1,000 bends throughout its lifespan, meaning fewer replacements and continuous peace of mind.

- What You Get: HDMI Cable (10 ft, 8K), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
Hulu describes the source novel as inspired by the true story of Hunter’s own family. That connection gives the drama an intensely personal center, but the subject matter also calls for a content-sensitive approach: this is a Holocaust story involving persecution, deportation, loss and survival, not light weekend viewing.
For readers who want the historical and family context behind the adaptation, Georgia Hunter’s book We Were the Lucky Ones is the source novel. The book and series can be approached separately, but the novel offers the original account on which the screen story is based.
4. Renegade Nell — Disney+
Best for: viewers looking for accessible period adventure with fantasy, humor and a rebellious heroine.
Set in England in 1705, the series follows Nell Jackson after she is framed for murder. She becomes a highwaywoman and receives help from Billy Blind, a magical spirit, while becoming entangled in a plot against the queen.
The premise combines several straightforward hooks—period action, mistaken identity, supernatural assistance and a female outlaw—with a lighter tone than the weekend’s grim crime and historical dramas. Disney announced that all episodes would stream exclusively on Disney+ beginning March 29, making this one of the clearest same-day launches in the roundup.
5. American Rust: Broken Justice — Prime Video
Best for: adults who prefer a bleak regional mystery to a glossy procedural.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThe second season returns to southwestern Pennsylvania, where Del Harris and Grace Poe try to rebuild their lives. Their efforts are complicated when new murders expose a larger conspiracy.
The show’s Rust Belt setting and focus on damaged communities give it a deliberately somber identity. It is less about a neat case-of-the-week solution than about how violence, economic decline and old relationships continue to shape the characters’ choices. Prime Video listed the season as a 10-episode drama, and the season premiered March 28—just ahead of the target weekend.
6. Tig Notaro: Hello Again — Prime Video
Best for: anyone who wants a short comedy alternative to committing to a full series.
In this stand-up special, Tig Notaro draws material from a late-night health scare, parenting, travel, celebrity encounters and physical therapy. The subjects are personal, but the delivery remains characteristically dry and understated.

Hello Again is the most compact option on the list. It works as a change of pace between heavier dramas, or as the pick for viewers who want a complete viewing experience rather than another serialized story to follow.

7. Lisa Frankenstein — Peacock
Best for: fans of camp, gothic romance, 1980s teen aesthetics and horror comedy.
In 1989, isolated teenager Lisa Swallows accidentally reanimates a corpse. What follows is an undead romance complicated by family conflict and murderous problems.
Written by Diablo Cody and directed by Zelda Williams, the film deliberately leans into a stylized 1980s teen-and-fantasy-horror look rather than presenting itself as straight horror. That makes it the most distinctive movie choice in the roundup: a combination of coming-of-age awkwardness, gothic visual language, romance and macabre comedy.

8. When You Finish Saving the World — Netflix
Best for: viewers who favor quiet, uncomfortable family dramedies over high-concept genre stories.
A shelter director and her politically ambitious teenage son struggle to connect while each forms an imperfect relationship with another young person. The tension comes less from a major external plot than from the way both characters misunderstand what the other needs.
The film marked Jesse Eisenberg’s directorial debut and stars Julianne Moore and Finn Wolfhard. It was based on Eisenberg’s earlier audio drama, which helps explain its emphasis on voice, interpersonal friction and the awkward spaces between people who care about each other but cannot communicate well.

An English football team travels to Rome to compete in the Homeless World Cup. Its gifted but troubled new striker must confront his past and learn how to function as part of a team.
This is not a conventional professional-league sports movie built around celebrity athletes or championship machinery. Its emotional engine is the players’ personal history and the challenge of building trust. The football tournament supplies the structure, while the story focuses on belonging, accountability and the possibility of starting over.
Netflix identified the film as a 2024 sports drama. It was the most straightforward feel-good option among the weekend’s movies, though its subject matter gives the familiar team story a broader social context.
10. Minions: The Rise of Gru — Prime Video
Best for: families looking for the clearest children’s-animation choice in the lineup.
This animated prequel follows young Gru as he tries to join the supervillain group known as the Vicious 6. After that plan fails, he begins the path toward becoming the franchise’s central villain while bonding with the Minions.
The film offers the broadest tonal contrast with We Were the Lucky Ones, American Rust and the other adult dramas. Its appeal is franchise familiarity, slapstick energy and the relationship between Gru and the Minions, making it the obvious selection for a household that wants animation rather than historical tragedy or crime.
It is also worth separating the editorial recommendation from any claim about a current Prime Video catalog: the film was listed there for the March 29–31 weekend, but streaming arrangements can change.
11. Imaginary — digital rental or purchase
Best for: horror viewers who want a recently theatrical film and are willing to pay separately for access.
Jessica returns to her childhood home and discovers that her stepdaughter’s imaginary bear friend, Chauncey, has sinister intentions. The story turns a familiar childhood-companion idea into a supernatural threat.

- BACKWARDS COMPATIBLE: Works with earlier versions to allow for use with a wide range of HDMI-enabled devices

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Two source novels to pair with the weekend’s adaptations
Two of the television entries were directly tied to bestselling books, but they offer very different reading experiences. A Gentleman in Moscow is a contained literary story about identity, routine and community under political confinement. We Were the Lucky Ones is a family survival narrative rooted in the author’s own history and the catastrophe of the Holocaust.

Reading either source novel before watching can make the adaptation choices easier to appreciate. Which title should you choose?
- For modern crime: Start with Parish for Giancarlo Esposito’s lead performance, or American Rust: Broken Justice for a darker Rust Belt conspiracy.
- For historical drama: Choose We Were the Lucky Ones for a serious family-survival story. Choose A Gentleman in Moscow if you prefer a more contained literary adaptation—but remember that its first episode was scheduled for April 1.
- For fantasy adventure: Renegade Nell combines an 18th-century setting, a framed heroine, highway-robbery action and a magical companion.
- For horror and gothic style: Pick Lisa Frankenstein for camp and undead romance, or Imaginary for a darker premise accessed through a separate rental or purchase.
- For comedy: Tig Notaro: Hello Again is the quickest way to avoid another serialized drama.
- For family viewing: Minions: The Rise of Gru is the most obvious animation choice, while The Beautiful Game offers a more grounded sports story.
- For a quiet character piece: When You Finish Saving the World is the least genre-driven selection and the best fit for viewers interested in strained family relationships.
Historical source note: The weekend dates and platform framing follow the contemporaneous March 2024 roundup and the official listings or announcements cited for the individual programs. Catalog availability, subscription inclusion and rental pricing were not rechecked as a current guide.
Frequently Asked Questions
Were all 11 titles available on Netflix or Hulu?
No. Netflix and Hulu were part of the headline, but the roundup also covered Disney+, Prime Video, Peacock, AMC, Paramount+ with Showtime and digital video-on-demand. The 11 titles were spread across multiple services.
Could you watch A Gentleman in Moscow during the March 29–31 weekend?
It was included as an imminent weekend watch, but Paramount’s official information listed the first episode for April 1, 2024. It should not be described as already available throughout March 29–31 without additional contemporaneous evidence.
Was Imaginary included with a streaming subscription?
The roundup treated Imaginary as a premium video-on-demand title, with Amazon identified as a rental or purchase route. That is different from subscription streaming, where the monthly service fee includes the title.
Which title is best for family viewing?
Minions: The Rise of Gru is the clearest children’s-animation option. The horror-comedies Lisa Frankenstein and Imaginary are not family-viewing substitutes, while the historical dramas address mature and distressing subjects.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: The March 29–31, 2024 weekend had unusually broad choices: We Were the Lucky Ones for serious historical drama, Renegade Nell for fantasy adventure, Parish and American Rust: Broken Justice for crime, Lisa Frankenstein for gothic horror comedy, Minions: The Rise of Gru for animation and Tig Notaro: Hello Again for a quick comedy break. Treat the platform information as a historical snapshot, and note that A Gentleman in Moscow premiered just after the weekend while Imaginary required a separate digital rental or purchase.
