The important examples reveal how synthetic media evolved from academic facial reenactment into art, satire, celebrity impersonation, political manipulation, endorsement scams, and ordinary-looking social clips.
This curated list includes both identity-based deepfakes and broader synthetic videos. Each item is labeled precisely, because an openly disclosed artwork, a research demonstration, a fabricated presidential message, and an unauthorized celebrity endorsement do not have the same meaning or risk.
These are the deepfake and synthetic-video examples worth watching in 2026—not because each one is a convincing hoax, but because together they show how the technology moved from academic facial reenactment to art, entertainment, political manipulation, scams, and everyday social-media content.
Start with In Event of Moon Disaster, the Tom Cruise impersonation videos, the Zelenskyy surrender video, and Runway’s Turing Reel. Then use the rest of the list to compare four questions: Who made the video? Whose identity or likeness does it use? Was the audience told what it was? What action does the video want viewers to take?

That framework matters because “deepfake” is often used as a catch-all. Some items below are identity-based deepfakes; others are synthetic videos that create fictional scenes without replacing a real person. They should not all be judged by the same standard.
Deepfake, face reenactment, or synthetic video?
A deepfake generally uses machine-learning techniques to alter or generate a person’s face, voice, expressions, or movements so that the result appears to show that person doing or saying something else. The identity substitution is central.
A broader synthetic video may be generated entirely from text, images, or other prompts. It can depict an invented event, fictional people, or a stylized political scene without impersonating a specific real person. A face-reenactment research demo may also be synthetic media without being a deception.
| Label | What it means | Examples in this list |
|---|---|---|
| Deepfake reconstruction | A real person’s appearance or performance is reconstructed or altered. | In Event of Moon Disaster |
| Face-and-voice impersonation | An impersonator’s performance is modified to resemble a recognizable person. | Tom Cruise videos |
| Synthetic-video demonstration | A controlled experiment or showcase of generated footage, not necessarily an identity deception. | Deep Video Portraits, Turing Reel, The Markup’s dance tests |
| Satirical use | A recognizable person is placed in an invented scene for clearly framed comedy or commentary. | Sassy Justice |
| Unauthorized AI likeness | A person’s face or voice is used without clear authorization, often to imply endorsement. | The deadmau5 promotional video |
1. In Event of Moon Disaster: Nixon’s never-delivered speech
Type: deepfake reconstruction and educational artwork.
In Event of Moon Disaster imagines an alternate history in which the Apollo 11 astronauts die on the lunar surface. In that scenario, Richard Nixon delivers a solemn televised address to the public. The film uses a reconstructed Nixon performance to make a speech that never happened appear historically plausible.
This is the best opening example because it is openly presented as an artwork rather than a disguised hoax. The available Nixon clip and Mozilla-hosted screening and question-and-answer material give viewers the surrounding context needed to understand what they are seeing.
Pay attention to the lesson behind the production: the same visual technique could be used for education, historical speculation, satire, or deception. The pixels alone do not tell you which one it is. The creator, publication context, disclosure, and purpose do.
2. Deep Video Portraits: the academic face-reenactment demonstration
Type: research demonstration and facial-motion reenactment.
Deep Video Portraits is useful as a technical prehistory lesson. The demonstration shows how an input portrait video can be reanimated: facial motion and expressions from one source can be transferred or controlled to produce a different-looking portrait.
It is not a viral misinformation incident and should not be presented as one. Its importance is that it reveals the research lineage behind later deepfakes. The technology did not appear fully formed as a political scam; it grew out of work on controllable facial animation, portrait synthesis, and the manipulation of visual signals.
When watching it, notice the difference between a laboratory demonstration and a deceptive social post. The research clip may make the technique visible and explainable. A short reposted video can remove that context and leave only the impression that a real person was captured on camera.
3. The Tom Cruise impersonation videos
Type: face-and-voice impersonation.
The viral Tom Cruise videos are among the clearest demonstrations of why a casual short-form video can be more persuasive than an obviously artificial laboratory experiment. The central performance came from actor and impersonator Miles Fisher, while visual-effects artist Chris Ume helped create the convincing Cruise likeness.
Recommended Free Tools
That distinction is essential: these were not authentic recordings of Tom Cruise speaking. They combined an impersonator’s acting, face replacement, voice imitation, lighting, editing, and short-form distribution. The result looked like an informal celebrity post rather than a formal synthetic-media demonstration.

Warm Tip: Fan noise at 1 m ranges from 29-35 dB by mode; steady fan sound is normal.
Watch the clips as a lesson in performance-plus-synthesis. Viewers often focus on whether the face looks correct, but the performance supplies much of the realism: posture, timing, gestures, setting, and an apparently spontaneous tone. A technically imperfect face can still persuade an audience when every other cue feels familiar.
4. Sassy Justice: deepfakes as satire
Type: satirical use.
Sassy Justice places recognizable public figures into absurd, comic conversations using deepfake portrayals. It demonstrates that the same general family of techniques used for impersonation can also serve entertainment, parody, and political commentary.
Its value in this watch list is the contrast with deceptive public-figure videos. A satire can use a person’s likeness while making the invented nature of the scene part of the viewing experience. That does not automatically settle every question about consent, publicity rights, or defamation, but it changes the audience’s interpretive task.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed

Ask three questions while watching: Is the video clearly framed as satire? Is the audience likely to understand that framing? Is the likeness being used to make a joke, or to manufacture trust in a real-world claim? “It is funny” and “it is authorized” are not interchangeable conclusions.
5. The Mark Zuckerberg “power” video
Type: face-and-voice impersonation and fabricated public statement.
This fake Zuckerberg address is a classic example of a public figure being made to deliver words he did not say. It belongs beside Sassy Justice because both use the likeness of a well-known technology executive, but their surrounding contexts and apparent purposes lead viewers toward different interpretations.
Do not repeat the fabricated claim as though it were an authentic Zuckerberg statement. The useful thing to watch is the mechanism of authority: a familiar face, a recognizable voice, and the visual language of a direct address can make an invented message seem to carry institutional weight.
When a public figure appears to announce a major policy, product, political position, or warning, look for the original upload and check the person’s verified channels, the organization’s newsroom, and independent reporting. A repost with millions of views is still only a repost.
6. The Heart Part 5 by Kendrick Lamar
Type: expressive digital-likeness transformation.
Kendrick Lamar’s The Heart Part 5 is an important counterexample to the idea that face replacement exists only for fraud and propaganda. The music video transforms Lamar’s appearance into a series of recognizable figures as part of an artistic performance.
The transformations are not presented as secret recordings or genuine statements from those people. They function as visual metaphor, linking the song’s ideas to public identities and cultural memory. The video therefore shows how identity-transfer techniques can be used for music, storytelling, and commentary.
It is also a reminder not to overstate technical claims. Viewers can identify the visible effect without assuming a particular software pipeline or claiming that every shot was made in exactly the same way. The artistic result is the relevant fact here.

Type: celebrity endorsement scam.
The Taylor Swift and Le Creuset-style example shows how synthetic video turns celebrity likeness into a direct commercial threat. A fabricated celebrity endorsement is not merely asking viewers to believe a false sentence; it is trying to make them click, buy, submit personal information, or trust a seller.
This is why celebrity scams deserve more attention than their entertainment value suggests. The emotional shortcut is familiar: if a trusted or admired person appears to recommend a product, the viewer may skip ordinary skepticism.

Before buying, verify the endorsement in two places:
- Check the celebrity’s official website and verified social accounts.
- Check the brand’s own website, newsroom, or verified social accounts.
- Inspect the seller’s domain, payment page, return policy, and contact details.
- Be especially cautious when a video directs you to a limited-time offer or asks for unusual personal or payment information.
A convincing face is not proof of a commercial relationship. A genuine brand and a genuine celebrity should be able to confirm the endorsement independently.

Type: unauthorized AI likeness and implied endorsement.
A 2026-reported case involving an AI-generated likeness of deadmau5 used to promote another DJ shows how the issue is moving beyond old examples of fake political speeches. The viewer is encouraged to believe that a real artist is personally endorsing another act.
This is a modern rights-and-trust problem. The important question is not simply whether the face looks authentic. It is whether the person authorized the use, whether the promotional relationship exists, and whether the audience is being deliberately led to believe that it does.
For performers, musicians, creators, and brands, the case illustrates why likeness monitoring and fast takedown procedures matter. For viewers, it provides a simple rule: an authentic-looking likeness is not evidence of authorization.
9. The Zelenskyy surrender video
Type: geopolitical deepfake and fabricated command.
The false video purporting to show Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy telling Ukrainian troops to surrender is the essential geopolitical example in this list. It appeared during Russia’s war against Ukraine, when a fabricated command could create confusion among an audience already operating under extreme pressure.
The significance is not that every viewer believed it. The point is that an attacker could create and distribute a plausible false message attributed to a national leader at a moment when speed, authority, and trust mattered.
This example also exposes a weakness in the question “Did the deepfake fool people?” Influence operations do not need universal belief to be useful. They may aim to delay decisions, create uncertainty, exhaust fact-checkers, or make people doubt authentic footage later.
In a crisis, verify urgent video through multiple channels: official government accounts, established news organizations, local authorities, and independent footage from the same event. Do not forward a dramatic command while waiting for someone else to establish its origin.
10. “Trump Gaza” political AI-video messaging
Type: political synthetic video, not a classic face-swap deepfake.
The “Trump Gaza” video belongs on a 2026 watch list because it demonstrates how generated video can turn political messaging into a vivid, emotionally charged scene. It is more accurately described as political synthetic video than as a conventional forged recording of an actual speech.

That distinction matters. A fabricated political scene can influence public opinion without pretending to document a real event. It may use recognizable people, invented imagery, aspirational imagery, or a computer-generated setting to communicate a political message. Calling every such production a deepfake can obscure the particular deception involved.

11. AI-generated social clips about fictional ordinary people
Type: synthetic social video and fabricated incident.
The next major wave is not necessarily about presidents or celebrities. Social platforms are increasingly filled with generated clips involving animals, older people, supposed victims, invented witnesses, and fictional news events. Many are designed to look like low-budget phone footage.
These videos can be harder to verify because there may be no public figure whose identity can be checked. A viewer cannot simply ask whether the celebrity’s official account posted it. Instead, provenance becomes central:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches- Who uploaded the first version?
- How old is the account, and does its history support the story?
- Does the location, weather, clothing, signage, or event timing make sense?
- Are there independent reports or other camera angles?
- Does the caption make a stronger claim than the footage itself supports?
- Can distinctive frames or phrases be found elsewhere through reverse search?
Some ordinary-looking clips are harmless jokes or demonstrations. Others are engagement bait, political propaganda, fraud, or fabricated evidence. Their low production quality should not be treated as proof that they are real.
12. Runway’s Turing Reel
Type: synthetic-video perception experiment.
Runway’s Turing Reel is not a notorious deepfake incident. It is a controlled viewing experience that places real and generated videos alongside one another, asking viewers to confront how difficult the distinction can become when clips are short and stripped of provenance.
That makes it an excellent companion to the more dramatic examples above. The exercise is not simply “spot the bad hands.” It tests how much viewers rely on intuition when they do not know who made a clip, when it was recorded, or why it was posted.
Watch it twice if possible: first by guessing, then by asking what evidence you actually used. If your judgment depended on a vague feeling that a clip “looked AI,” that is precisely the limitation the experiment is designed to expose.

Type: controlled generative-video testing.
The Markup tested 36 videos across four commercial models, including ordinary cultural formats such as dance. The project is useful because it moves the discussion away from spectacular celebrity fakes and toward the kind of content people may encounter every day.
These tests do not document one deceptive public-figure impersonation. They examine generation quality and cultural representation. That makes them valuable evidence for a different question: how well do current systems render bodies, movement, choreography, and people from different backgrounds?
Representative clips are worth watching alongside Turing Reel. Compare the viewer experience rather than looking only for technical defects. A generated dance may be obviously wrong when viewed frame by frame but persuasive enough in a short autoplay feed, especially when the caption supplies a plausible story.

Older deepfake advice often focused on visible defects: unnatural blinking, strange teeth, soft facial edges, distorted hands, mismatched lighting, or a voice that sounds slightly flat. These can still be useful clues, but they are not a reliable universal test.

Modern generation and manipulation systems can produce realistic facial motion and physiological signals. At the same time, ordinary authentic video can contain compression artifacts, dropped frames, poor lighting, beauty filters, unstable autofocus, and audio synchronization problems. A real clip may look strange; a false clip may look clean.
Detection research therefore uses benchmarks, datasets, and changing test conditions rather than one magic visual tell. A detector that performs well on one generation method or dataset may be less reliable when the video is re-encoded, cropped, reposted, translated, or produced by a newer system.
A practical verification routine for any suspicious video
- Pause before sharing. Emotional urgency is often part of the manipulation. Save the clip or its URL without amplifying it.
- Find the earliest available upload. A repost may remove the caption, disclaimer, date, or surrounding explanation.
- Check the source account. Look at its age, previous posts, location claims, and whether it routinely publishes fabricated or AI-generated content.
- Check the date and event. An old video may be relabeled as a current event. Search distinctive phrases from the caption and audio.
- Look for corroboration. Compare official statements, reputable reporting, eyewitness accounts, satellite or location information where relevant, and other recordings.
- Verify identity and authorization separately. Even if the person is genuinely depicted, that does not prove they approved the message, product, or use of their likeness.
- Inspect labels and disclosures. Platform labels can help, but their absence does not prove that a clip is authentic.
- Use visual clues only as supporting evidence. Facial edges, hands, lip-sync, shadows, and reflections can prompt further checking; they should not end it.
For high-stakes material—war, elections, public safety, financial offers, or allegations about a private person—the standard should be stronger than “I watched it and it looked real.”
What not to watch or share
Do not embed or drive traffic to exploitative sexual deepfakes, especially nonconsensual intimate imagery. The harm falls on real people even when the footage is entirely fabricated, and repeated circulation can magnify humiliation, harassment, and reputational damage.
The U.S. Department of Justice’s 2026 announcement concerning nonconsensual intimate imagery illustrates the seriousness of this category, but legal rules vary by jurisdiction and continue to change. Platform policies, criminal law, civil remedies, and victim-support procedures are not identical everywhere.
A responsible article can explain the technology, its harms, and the verification problem without reproducing abusive material or naming victims unnecessarily.
The larger lesson from these 13 examples
The history is not a straight line from “fake” to “real.” It is a shift in what context viewers must supply:
- Deep Video Portraits shows the research foundation.
- In Event of Moon Disaster shows an educational reconstruction with explicit framing.
- The Tom Cruise videos show how acting, face replacement, voice imitation, and social distribution can create celebrity realism.
- Sassy Justice and The Heart Part 5 show creative and expressive uses of digital likeness.
- The Zuckerberg and Zelenskyy videos show how fabricated speech can exploit authority.
- The Taylor Swift and deadmau5 examples show how likeness can be converted into commercial trust without authorization.
- “Trump Gaza,” Turing Reel, The Markup’s dance tests, and ordinary-looking social clips show that synthetic video is expanding beyond classic face swaps.
The best habit to take from the list is simple: verify the source, context, and authorization—not just the face. Seeing is still useful. It is no longer sufficient proof.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are all AI-generated videos deepfakes?
No. A deepfake usually alters or impersonates a real person’s identity, while synthetic video is a broader category that can include entirely fictional people, places, and events. Some items in this list, including Runway’s Turing Reel and The Markup’s dance tests, are synthetic-video demonstrations rather than identity-based deepfakes.
Can you reliably spot a deepfake just by looking at it?
No. Visual clues such as strange hands, facial edges, lip-sync, teeth, reflections, or lighting can justify closer inspection, but they are not foolproof. Compression can make real footage look artificial, while newer systems can produce convincing facial motion. Check the source, date, disclosure, official statements, and independent reporting.
How should I verify a suspicious video?
Verify the original uploader, account history, date, surrounding caption, and independent corroboration. For celebrity endorsements, check both the person’s official channels and the brand’s official website. For political or crisis footage, rely on multiple reputable sources rather than a viral repost.
Should articles embed sexual deepfakes as examples?
Do not embed or circulate nonconsensual intimate deepfakes. They can seriously harm real people even when the imagery is fabricated. Discuss the issue through reputable legal, government, victim-support, or policy sources instead of linking to abusive material.
