Who Is Peter Todd? What HBO’s Satoshi Documentary Actually Claimed

Peter Todd is a prominent Bitcoin developer, but HBO’s 2024 documentary did not prove that he was Satoshi Nakamoto. Here is what Todd built, what the film claimed, and what evidence would actually settle the mystery.

Peter Todd is not proven to be Satoshi Nakamoto. He is a Canadian Bitcoin developer and cryptography specialist known for important Bitcoin Core work and for creating OpenTimestamps. HBO’s 2024 documentary Money Electric: The Bitcoin Mystery argued that Todd may be Bitcoin’s pseudonymous creator, but its case was circumstantial, Todd denied the claim, and the cited public record contains no verified cryptographic link between Todd and Satoshi’s known keys.

Peter Todd is not proven to be Satoshi Nakamoto

Peter Todd is a Canadian Bitcoin developer and cryptography specialist with a substantial, publicly documented technical record. He contributed to Bitcoin Core, was associated with proposals including CHECKLOCKTIMEVERIFY and opt-in Replace-by-Fee, and created OpenTimestamps, a system for producing independently verifiable proofs that data existed before a particular time.

In October 2024, HBO’s documentary Money Electric: The Bitcoin Mystery argued that Todd may be Satoshi Nakamoto, Bitcoin’s pseudonymous creator. The film’s case was circumstantial, not a cryptographic identification. Todd denied the claim, and the available public record does not establish that he wrote Bitcoin’s 2008 white paper or controlled Satoshi’s known accounts and keys.

Who Peter Todd is apart from the Satoshi theory

Todd’s professional identity is best understood through open-source software and applied cryptography, not through the unresolved question of Bitcoin’s creator. Bitcoin.org lists him among Bitcoin contributors, while Bitcoin Core documentation explains that contribution is an open-source role rather than a conventional corporate position. People can contribute code, review, testing, documentation, translation, and other work; contributors and maintainers are not interchangeable labels.

That distinction matters. A person can understand Bitcoin’s architecture, write influential proposals, or participate in development without having written the original protocol. Todd’s documented work demonstrates technical expertise and proximity to Bitcoin development. It does not, by itself, demonstrate that he authored the white paper or operated under the Satoshi pseudonym.

CHECKLOCKTIMEVERIFY and BIP 65

One of Todd’s best-known Bitcoin-related contributions is BIP 65, which specified CHECKLOCKTIMEVERIFY. The opcode lets a transaction output remain unspendable until a specified time or block height. In practical terms, it provides a way to encode time-based spending conditions into Bitcoin transactions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Bitcoin Core’s release documentation records BIP 65 as merged in Bitcoin Core 0.12.0. The proposal is important because it expanded the kinds of contractual and delayed-spending arrangements that could be expressed using Bitcoin’s scripting system. It is also a useful example of why Todd is taken seriously as a Bitcoin engineer—but it is not evidence that he created Bitcoin.

Replace-by-Fee and BIP 125

Todd is also associated with BIP 125, the opt-in full Replace-by-Fee proposal. Under the rules described by BIP 125, a transaction that signals replaceability can be replaced in the mempool by another transaction spending the same inputs and paying a higher fee, subject to the relevant policy rules.

Replace-by-Fee is often misunderstood as a way to rewrite confirmed transactions. It is instead principally a transaction-relay and mempool policy mechanism: it can allow an unconfirmed transaction to be fee-bumped before confirmation. The proposal became part of the broader debate over fee management, transaction replacement, and the practical limits of unconfirmed Bitcoin payments.

OpenTimestamps

Todd created OpenTimestamps, an open standard for timestamping proofs. The system lets a user create a proof that a piece of data existed before a particular time and later verify that proof independently. It uses Bitcoin anchoring to make the timestamping process scalable, distributed, and less dependent on trusting a single timestamping authority.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

OpenTimestamps does not prove that the timestamped material is true, nor does it prove who originally created the material. It establishes an evidence trail for the existence of data before a point in time. That distinction also helps explain the larger Satoshi debate: a technical relationship or historical clue may be interesting without authenticating the person behind a pseudonym.

The timeline behind the Peter Todd theory

Date What the public record shows What it does—and does not—establish
October 31, 2008 Satoshi Nakamoto’s Bitcoin white paper was publicly circulated. This is the starting point for Bitcoin’s published design, but it does not identify its author.
April 2012 A secondary technical profile identifies Todd’s first Bitcoin Core code submission as occurring in April 2012. It places Todd’s documented code contribution after the white paper. It does not rule out earlier private work, and it does not prove authorship.
2014–2016 Todd’s public work included Bitcoin development, privacy-related projects, and the launch or development of OpenTimestamps. It confirms growing technical involvement and expertise, not control of Satoshi’s identity.
October 8, 2024 Cullen Hoback’s documentary Money Electric: The Bitcoin Mystery was released through HBO/Max and focused its Satoshi theory on Todd. The film made an allegation or argument; it did not provide publicly documented cryptographic authentication.
October 8–9, 2024 Todd publicly denied being Satoshi, while contemporaneous reporting described skepticism from Bitcoin insiders. The denial is part of the public record, but neither a denial nor community skepticism constitutes mathematical proof.

The April 2012 date deserves a qualification: the dossier’s source for it is a secondary profile, not a date asserted by Bitcoin Core itself. It is therefore safer to describe it as the first submission identified by that profile rather than as definitive proof of when Todd first encountered Bitcoin.

What HBO’s documentary claimed

Money Electric: The Bitcoin Mystery, directed by Cullen Hoback and released on October 8, 2024, presented a globe-spanning investigation into Satoshi Nakamoto’s identity. Its conclusion centered on Peter Todd.

The film’s theory drew on several categories of circumstantial material:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • interpretations of old Bitcoin forum exchanges;
  • the timing of Todd’s visible involvement in Bitcoin;
  • his technical proximity to early Bitcoin discussions;
  • connections Hoback drew between Todd’s later work and ideas visible in Bitcoin’s early history; and
  • the filmmaker’s interpretation of Todd’s behavior and exchanges during interviews.

Those clues may support a hypothesis, but they are not the same as authentication. A writing style can be imitated or misread. Technical vocabulary can be shared by a community. A person can understand an old message without having written it. Interview behavior can reflect humor, irritation, confusion, or discomfort rather than concealed authorship.

Most importantly, the cited reporting does not document a valid signature from a cryptographic key demonstrably controlled by Satoshi and linked independently to Todd. That omission is central. The documentary named or suggested Todd as Satoshi; it did not establish the identification to the standard normally expected for a cryptographic pseudonym.

Why the claim remains disputed

The age and chronology problem

One tension in the documentary’s theory is chronological. Todd was young during Bitcoin’s earliest public period, while Satoshi’s writings and communications suggested a technically mature author familiar with cryptography and electronic-cash ideas.

Hoback’s theory attempted to account for that apparent mismatch by pointing to Todd’s early contact with cypherpunk communities and his later expertise. Those facts could make Todd a plausible person to investigate. They do not prove that he wrote the white paper or sent Satoshi’s messages.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The chronology cuts both ways. Todd’s first documented Bitcoin Core submission being identified as April 2012 does not prove he had no earlier involvement, because private research and undocumented communication would not necessarily appear in a public code repository. But the absence of a public early record also cannot be converted into evidence that he was secretly Satoshi.

Technical proximity is not authorship

Bitcoin’s early contributors and later developers necessarily share an interest in the same technical problems. A developer who understands transaction scripting, cryptography, privacy, or electronic cash may recognize concepts in Bitcoin’s design. That recognition is not evidence of having originated them.

Todd’s later contributions are particularly tempting to use as retrospective clues because they are technically significant. Yet the logic is incomplete: expertise can explain why someone contributed effectively after joining a project, but it does not establish that the same person created the project years earlier.

Community skepticism

Contemporaneous coverage from TIME reported skepticism among Bitcoin insiders, while Axios summarized the post-release view that Todd was unlikely to be Satoshi. These reactions are assessments, not mathematical disproof. The careful conclusion is therefore that the identification remains unproven—not that every version of the theory has been conclusively falsified.

Peter Todd’s response

Todd denied the identification before or around the documentary’s release. CoinDesk reported him saying, “Of course I’m not Satoshi,” while other coverage quoted the shorter statement, “I’m not Satoshi.” CoinDesk also reported Todd describing Hoback as “grasping at straws.”

The Go-Go's (Documentary) [Blu-ray/DVD]
  • Multiplatinum LA rock band The Go-Go's candid, universally acclaimed documentary directed by Allison Ellwood

The documentary included exchanges in which Todd appeared to joke about or play with the premise. Those moments should not be presented as an admission. Humor, evasiveness, anger, and apparent discomfort are weak evidence in an identity investigation, particularly when the person being questioned knows that the conversation is being filmed and edited.

A denial is not cryptographic proof either. A real Satoshi could deny the identity, and an unrelated person could deny a false accusation. Todd’s statement is therefore important as his position, but it cannot settle the question by itself.

What evidence would actually identify Satoshi?

Satoshi’s identity is not just a biographical mystery; it is a cryptographic attribution problem. The strongest evidence would involve control of resources or information that can be independently tied to Satoshi’s historical activity.

  1. A valid signature from a known Satoshi-associated key. A fresh message signed by a private key linked to Satoshi’s known accounts or early Bitcoin infrastructure would demonstrate control of that key at the time of signing. That would be far stronger than a forum-style clue.
  2. An independently verifiable bridge from the key to Todd. Showing control of a Satoshi key would establish control of the pseudonymous identity, but identifying the human behind it would still require reliable evidence connecting that key holder to Todd.
  3. Independent evidence tied to early Bitcoin infrastructure. Reproducible technical records, authenticated communications, or other evidence that can be tested by people who are not relying on the documentary’s interpretation would carry more weight than an edited interview.

Even a signature requires careful interpretation. It proves possession of the relevant private key, not automatically every biographical detail about its owner. But a valid signature from a key convincingly associated with Satoshi would be a fundamentally different category of evidence from writing style, age, timing, or demeanor.

No such public proof linking Todd to Satoshi is documented in the cited reporting. Until one appears, “Peter Todd is Satoshi Nakamoto” is an unsupported statement of fact.

How to describe Peter Todd accurately

The most defensible description is:

Peter Todd is a Canadian Bitcoin developer and cryptography specialist who made important contributions to Bitcoin Core and created OpenTimestamps.

The Satoshi claim should be described separately:

HBO’s 2024 documentary Money Electric: The Bitcoin Mystery argued that Todd may be Satoshi Nakamoto, but it presented circumstantial evidence, and Todd denied the claim.

That wording preserves both parts of the story. Todd has a real and consequential technical history, and HBO made a real public allegation. Neither fact should be inflated into proof that Todd created Bitcoin.

The bottom line on the HBO identification

Peter Todd is a documented Bitcoin engineer whose work includes important scripting and transaction-replacement proposals and the OpenTimestamps project. HBO’s Money Electric made him the focus of a Satoshi Nakamoto theory based on circumstantial clues. Todd denied being Satoshi, and the cited public record contains no verified cryptographic link between Todd and Satoshi’s known keys or early infrastructure.

The responsible answer is simple: Todd is a notable early Bitcoin contributor and the subject of HBO’s theory, but his identity as Satoshi Nakamoto remains unproven.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Peter Todd Satoshi Nakamoto?

No. HBO’s Money Electric: The Bitcoin Mystery argued that Todd may be Satoshi, but the film’s evidence was circumstantial. Todd denied the claim, and the cited public record does not document a cryptographic signature or independently verifiable link identifying him as Bitcoin’s creator.

What did Peter Todd contribute to Bitcoin?

Todd is associated with BIP 65, which specified CHECKLOCKTIMEVERIFY, and BIP 125, the opt-in full Replace-by-Fee proposal. He also created OpenTimestamps, a standard for producing independently verifiable proofs that data existed before a particular time.

Why did HBO identify Peter Todd as Satoshi?

The documentary interpreted old forum exchanges, Todd’s timing and proximity to early Bitcoin discussions, his technical expertise, and his interview behavior. Those clues can support a theory, but they do not prove control of Satoshi’s cryptographic keys.

What would prove that Peter Todd created Bitcoin?

A valid signature from a cryptographic key demonstrably associated with Satoshi would be much stronger evidence than writing style or interview behavior. To identify Todd specifically, investigators would also need an independently verifiable connection between the key holder and Todd.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: Peter Todd’s Bitcoin credentials are real; HBO’s identification of him as Satoshi Nakamoto is not proven. The documentary offered circumstantial clues, Todd denied the claim, and no publicly documented cryptographic evidence in the cited record connects him to Satoshi’s known keys.
