To turn on AutoMix in iOS 26: open Settings, tap Apps > Music > Song Transitions, and select AutoMix. You can change it temporarily while listening by opening Apple Music’s MiniPlayer, tapping Up Next, and tapping the AutoMix button.
To turn on AutoMix in iOS 26: open Settings, tap Apps > Music > Song Transitions, then select AutoMix. You can also change it while listening from Apple Music’s playback queue: tap the MiniPlayer, tap Up Next, and tap the AutoMix button.
AutoMix is Apple Music’s adaptive song-transition feature. Instead of applying the same fade length to every track, it chooses a transition suited to the music. Depending on the songs, it may match beats, stretch time, remove silence, or use a simpler fade. It will not necessarily create an audible transition between every pair of tracks.
Before you start
- Your iPhone must be running iOS 26 or later. Apple’s current compatibility list includes iPhone 11 and later, iPhone SE (2nd generation) and later, and newer models including the iPhone 17 family and iPhone Air. Check Apple’s iOS 26 compatibility documentation if you are unsure whether your iPhone is supported.
- You need an Apple Music subscription. Apple says AutoMix is available with subscription content; without a subscription, Crossfade is the available transition option in Music settings and the Apple Music app.
- For dynamic transitions, use songs from the Apple Music catalog. AutoMix does not dynamically transition every kind of audio stored in your library.
Turn on AutoMix in iPhone Settings
- Open the Settings app.
- Tap Apps.
- Tap Music.
- Tap Song Transitions.
- Select AutoMix.
Apple’s iPhone User Guide says AutoMix is enabled by default in supported configurations, but the setting can be changed. If you do not see exactly these labels, update to iOS 26 or later and check that you are looking under Settings > Apps > Music. Menu wording can vary slightly by language or software revision.

Enable or disable AutoMix while music is playing
The in-player control is faster when you want to change the behavior temporarily without changing the broader Music setting:
- Open the Apple Music app and start playing a song.
- Tap the MiniPlayer at the bottom of the screen to open the full player.
- Tap the Up Next button.
- Tap the AutoMix button to turn the feature on or off.
The queue control can also be used to switch between available song-transition behaviors while you are listening. If the button is unavailable or the feature does not appear, confirm the iOS version, Apple Music subscription, and audio source.
What AutoMix actually does
AutoMix is not a fixed-length crossfade. It analyzes the relationship between consecutive songs and selects what Apple describes as a DJ-like transition. Apple says the feature can use beat matching and time stretching, remove silence, or fall back to a simpler crossfade when a more elaborate transition is not suitable. Apple’s iOS 26 announcement describes the adaptive approach.

As a result, two song changes in the same playlist may sound different. One may blend rhythmically, another may have a short fade, and another may begin normally with no obvious overlap. That variation is part of AutoMix’s design rather than evidence that the setting has stopped working.

AutoMix versus Crossfade
| Feature | How it works | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| AutoMix | Chooses a transition dynamically, potentially using beat matching, time stretching, silence removal, or a simpler fade. | Listeners who want Apple Music to adapt the transition to each pair of songs. |
| Crossfade | Uses a user-selected duration to fade one song out while the next fades in. | Listeners who want a more predictable transition length. |
| Off | Plays tracks without an added transition, preserving the natural gap between songs. | Albums, classical listening, spoken-word material, or anyone who prefers the original spacing. |
How to use Crossfade instead
Choose Crossfade if you want control over how long songs overlap:
- Open Settings.
- Go to Apps > Music > Song Transitions.
- Turn on Song Transitions if necessary.
- Select Crossfade.
- Drag the slider to choose the transition duration.
You can also change the transition behavior from the Apple Music playback queue. Crossfade is the more consistent choice when you do not want Apple to vary the transition from one song pair to the next. Apple documents the differences between AutoMix, Crossfade, and turning transitions off in its Apple Music song-transition support article.

How to turn song transitions off
- Open Settings.
- Tap Apps > Music > Song Transitions.
- Turn Song Transitions off.
This restores the natural gap between tracks instead of using AutoMix or Crossfade.
Why AutoMix may not transition a particular song pair
AutoMix being selected does not guarantee a dynamic transition for every track. Apple identifies several situations in which it may not dynamically transition:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches- Sequential album playback: Albums played in their intended order, especially where the original gaps matter, may play without transitions.
- Incompatible genres or tempos: Some songs do not make a suitable rhythmic or musical match.
- Uploaded music: Audio uploaded from your personal music library may not support AutoMix’s dynamic transitions.
- iTunes Store purchases: Songs purchased and downloaded from the iTunes Store may not receive a dynamic AutoMix transition.
Apple also notes that some genres may play without transitions. These are documented limitations, not a promise that every catalog track will blend. See the iOS 26 iPhone User Guide for Apple’s current details.

A practical troubleshooting test
If AutoMix appears enabled but you hear no transition, test it with a playlist containing several Apple Music catalog tracks by different artists rather than using a sequential album. This removes two common variables—album-order playback and locally sourced audio—but still does not guarantee that every pair will blend.
- Confirm that Settings > Apps > Music > Song Transitions is set to AutoMix.
- Open the Apple Music queue and confirm the AutoMix control is enabled there.
- Play catalog songs from different artists and, if possible, with broadly compatible tempos.
- Try more than one song pair. A normal gap on one pair can be expected.
- If you prefer an overlap every time, select Crossfade and set its duration instead.
Do you need AirPods or special headphones?
No. AutoMix is a software feature in Apple Music and does not require AirPods or a particular speaker. You can listen through the iPhone’s built-in output, wired audio equipment where supported, or compatible Bluetooth headphones and speakers. Apple says Bluetooth headphones can be used for Apple Music playback, although Bluetooth audio is not lossless.
If you want an optional wireless listening accessory, Apple AirPods Pro 3 is one current example. It is an accessory for hearing the result—not a requirement for AutoMix, and it does not make AutoMix work with song types that the feature does not dynamically transition. Apple’s AirPods documentation identifies AirPods Pro 3 as a 2025 wireless Bluetooth audio product compatible with Apple devices.

- Choose AutoMix for playlists when you want adaptive, DJ-like changes and do not mind that some tracks will transition differently or play with a normal gap.
- Choose Crossfade when a consistent overlap is more important than an intelligent transition matched to the music.
- Turn Song Transitions off for natural album spacing, classical works, spoken-word listening, or any track sequence where added blending is distracting.
Apple Music availability and features can vary by country or region. If AutoMix is missing after confirming iOS 26 or later and a qualifying Apple Music subscription, check Apple’s current support documentation for your region and make sure the songs you are testing come from the Apple Music catalog.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why is Apple Music AutoMix not working between every song?
AutoMix may not create a transition for every song pair. Sequential albums, incompatible genres or tempos, uploaded tracks, and iTunes Store purchases may play without a dynamic transition. Test a playlist of Apple Music catalog tracks from different artists.
Do I need AirPods to use AutoMix?
No. AutoMix does not require AirPods or any specific headphones. It works as an Apple Music software feature; compatible Bluetooth headphones and speakers are optional listening devices.
How do I use Crossfade instead of AutoMix?
Go to Settings > Apps > Music > Song Transitions, select Crossfade, and adjust the duration slider. Crossfade uses a predictable user-selected length rather than AutoMix’s adaptive behavior.
The Bottom Line
Use Settings > Apps > Music > Song Transitions > AutoMix to enable Apple Music’s adaptive transitions in iOS 26. For a temporary change, use the Apple Music MiniPlayer and Up Next queue. AutoMix requires an Apple Music subscription and catalog content, and it may deliberately leave some song pairs unblended; use Crossfade when you want a predictable overlap or turn Song Transitions off for the original gaps.
