Netflix still works on Windows 11—but downloads do not
Netflix has not stopped working on Windows 11. You can still stream through the Netflix app, Microsoft Edge, Google Chrome, or the Netflix website. The major change is offline viewing: Netflix’s current Windows app no longer supports downloading films and shows for later playback.
If the Download button has disappeared, or titles you previously saved are no longer available offline, Netflix says your computer is using the new version of its Windows app. Netflix also says there is no supported way to return to the old download-enabled version.
What changed in the Windows Netflix app?
Netflix describes the newer Windows app as adding support for live events, higher streaming quality, and ad-supported plans. At the same time, it removed downloads from Windows.

The app requires Microsoft Edge to be installed. Independent reports and user discussions describe the new experience as an Edge-based web app or Progressive Web App, which helps explain why it may feel more like a browser shortcut than a traditional Windows application. However, the important practical point comes from Netflix’s own support documentation: streaming remains available, while Windows downloads do not.
Netflix has not publicly established a specific reason for removing the feature in the support information covered here. Licensing, platform architecture, and maintenance costs are possible explanations, but they remain speculation and should not be treated as confirmed motives.
Can you restore the old Netflix app?
Not through an official Netflix-supported method. Netflix’s guidance for missing downloads says that a Windows device without the download feature is already using the new app version, and that there is no way to go back to the old version.
You may find discussions about archived installers or older Microsoft Store packages, but those are unofficial workarounds. An old package may fail to install, stop working when Netflix changes its service, lack current security updates, or violate the assumptions of the current app and service. Downloading an installer from an unknown mirror also creates an avoidable malware risk.

How to watch Netflix on Windows 11 now
You can continue streaming Netflix using any of these options:
- The Netflix app for Windows 10 and later.
- The Netflix website in a supported browser.
- Microsoft Edge.
- Google Chrome.
The Windows app requires Microsoft Edge to be installed, even if you normally watch through another route. If you only want to stream, the loss of downloads does not prevent you from using Netflix on the computer.
What about 4K and HDR?
The app change does not mean every Windows computer will automatically receive the highest available picture quality. Netflix’s requirements for Ultra HD playback include Windows 11 with current updates, a qualifying Netflix plan, suitable playback-quality settings, a sufficiently fast internet connection, and a supported playback method such as Microsoft Edge, Google Chrome, or the Netflix app.

These are alternatives to the Windows computer, not methods for restoring the download button inside the Windows app. Download availability can also vary by title and device, so no supported platform guarantees that every film or episode can be saved offline.
Best replacement options for offline Netflix viewing
Amazon Fire tablet
Netflix explicitly lists Fire tablets among the devices that support downloads. That makes an Amazon Fire tablet for Netflix downloads a straightforward option for someone who mainly wants a separate device for flights, travel, or places with unreliable internet.

A Fire tablet does not repair the Windows app and does not transfer Windows downloads to another device. It is a replacement viewing device, and you should still check the current Netflix app and device compatibility before buying.
Android tablet
Netflix supports downloads on Android phones and tablets. An Android tablet may be a better fit if you want a larger screen while retaining a mobile platform designed for offline viewing. The exact download experience can depend on the device, Android version, app version, and title.
For shoppers, an Android tablet for Netflix offline viewing is a more accurate description than a promise that any Android tablet will download every Netflix title.
iPad
Netflix lists iPhone and iPad among its supported download platforms. An iPad can therefore serve as a separate offline-viewing device, particularly for people already using Apple products.

Chromebook with Google Play Store
Netflix identifies compatible Google Chromebooks with the Google Play Store installed as another download-capable option. This may appeal to readers who still want a laptop-like form factor rather than a tablet.
Check the individual Chromebook’s specifications before purchasing: Play Store availability varies by model and configuration. A Chromebook with Google Play Store for Netflix downloads is the relevant category, not every Chromebook sold under the name.
What troubleshooting can—and cannot—do
Microsoft Edge troubleshooting can help with ordinary browser download problems, including SmartScreen warnings, antivirus blocks, Group Policy restrictions, network failures, and file-system permissions. Those steps are useful when a normal file will not download in Edge.
They do not restore Netflix downloads on Windows. Netflix’s current documentation says the download feature is unavailable on Windows, so changing Edge’s download folder or disabling a security control will not recreate the removed Netflix function. Avoid weakening Windows security in an attempt to recover it.

Netflix’s Windows experience has been reduced in one important respect: the new app continues to stream but no longer provides offline downloads. There is no Netflix-supported rollback to the old app, and ordinary Edge troubleshooting cannot bring the feature back.
If streaming on a Windows 11 PC is enough, keep using the app, Edge, Chrome, or the Netflix website. If offline viewing is essential, use a supported Android device, iPhone or iPad, Amazon Fire tablet, or a Chromebook with the Google Play Store. Those devices are alternatives for watching offline—not repairs for the Windows app.
