JioCinema has transitioned into JioHotstar in India. To download a supported movie or TV episode for offline viewing, use the official JioHotstar app—not an old JioCinema website, APK, browser extension, or third-party downloader.
How to download a movie or TV show on JioHotstar
- Install or update the official JioHotstar app. On Android, use Google Play; on Apple devices, use the App Store. Check that the publisher is JIOSTAR INDIA PRIVATE LIMITED. The app listings support mobile devices, and the Apple listing also covers iPad and Apple TV. Exact device and operating-system requirements can change.
- Sign in if required. Some titles are available only to registered users or subscribers. Subscription plans can have different content and feature restrictions.
- Find the movie, series, or episode. Use search, then open the title’s details page. For a TV show, select the specific episode you want to save if the app presents downloads episode by episode.
- Look for the Download control. Depending on the current app version, it may appear near or below the video player or alongside the title information. Older JioCinema help documentation referred to a download icon and a “My Downloads” area; JioHotstar’s labels and layout may differ.
- Select a quality if the option appears. Higher quality uses more storage and data. Start the download while connected to a reliable internet connection and leave the app open if your device limits background activity.
- Watch from the app’s downloads area. Open JioHotstar and go to its Downloads or equivalent offline-viewing section. The saved title is controlled by the app; it is not a normal MP4 that you can open from Files, Gallery, or a video player.
Does every JioHotstar movie or episode support downloads?
No. Download availability is decided title by title and can vary with your account, subscription plan, device, region, and the service’s content rights. Movies, TV episodes, sports programming, and live events should not be assumed to be downloadable.
The most reliable test is simple: open the title page in the official app. If you see an enabled Download button, the title is currently eligible under the conditions shown by the app. If the button is missing or disabled, it may not be available for offline viewing on that title, account, device, or location.

Even premium content is not automatically downloadable. Likewise, the presence of a live stream does not guarantee that the event can be saved for later. JioHotstar’s service terms state that not all content is available for download.
Where are JioHotstar downloads stored?
Downloads remain inside the JioHotstar app and are intended for temporary offline access. They are not ordinary video files and normally will not appear as playable movies in your phone’s Gallery or Files app.
That design matters for both practical and legal reasons. The service terms describe downloads as temporary access rather than permanent ownership and prohibit attempts to create permanent copies. You should use the app’s own offline-viewing feature instead of trying to extract, convert, or move the downloaded video.
How long do downloaded titles remain available?
There is no single expiry period that should be promised for every JioHotstar title. The applicable period can depend on the title and the service’s authorization rules. A download may stop playing if:
- its temporary authorization expires;
- the movie or episode leaves the JioHotstar catalogue;
- your subscription, account entitlement, or plan changes;
- the app needs to reconnect to verify access; or
- the title’s regional rights change.
If the app displays an expiry date, remaining viewing period, or other restriction for a particular download, treat that title-specific information as authoritative. Do not rely on fixed claims such as “all downloads last 48 hours” or “every download lasts 30 days.”

Can you download JioHotstar videos on a laptop?
Do not treat JioHotstar as a service that provides downloadable MP4 files through a laptop browser. Offline downloads are an app feature, not a conventional browser-download feature. Jiostar’s terms distinguish browser access from mobile applications and state that mobile-browser streaming is not available in the usual way; users may be directed to the mobile app.
The supported approach is to use the official JioHotstar app on a compatible phone or tablet and play the title from the app’s downloads section. Do not use screen recording, browser extensions, stream-ripping utilities, or “JioCinema video downloader” websites to create a computer copy.
Android, iPhone, and tablet requirements
Use the official JioHotstar app on a supported phone or tablet. The current Google Play and Apple App Store listings identify JIOSTAR INDIA PRIVATE LIMITED as the developer. Before installing, check the current store listing for the operating-system version, device compatibility, and app availability applicable to your device.
The practical requirements are:
- a supported Android or Apple mobile device;
- the official, updated JioHotstar app;
- enough internal storage for the selected downloads;
- internet access for the initial download; and
- an account or subscription when the title or plan requires one.
A larger tablet can be more comfortable for watching downloaded documentaries and episodes, but it does not guarantee that a title will have a Download button. External storage should not be assumed to be a supported download destination unless the current app explicitly provides that option.
JioHotstar download troubleshooting
The Download button is missing
- Confirm that you opened the official JioHotstar app rather than a browser page or an old JioCinema installation.
- Check whether the specific movie, episode, or event is downloadable. Not all content is eligible.
- Confirm that you are signed in and that your subscription or account can access the title.
- Consider regional, device, and plan restrictions.
- Update the app, close it completely, and reopen it.
The download is stuck or fails
- Switch to a stable Wi-Fi or mobile-data connection.
- Check free storage on the phone or tablet.
- Make sure the device is not blocking the app’s downloads or background activity.
- Retry after updating and restarting the app.
- Check whether the title is still available in the catalogue.
The download finished but will not play
Open it from JioHotstar’s Downloads area, not from a file manager. Briefly reconnect the device to the internet and reopen the app; this may allow the service to refresh temporary authorization, although it is not a guaranteed fix. Also check whether the title has expired, left the catalogue, or is no longer covered by your account or subscription.
The app says there is not enough space
Delete completed downloads you have watched, remove other large files, or choose a lower download quality if JioHotstar offers that choice. Do not delete app data unless you understand that doing so may remove offline downloads and require you to download them again.

You still cannot download the title
Use the support or feedback option inside the current JioHotstar app and include the title name, device, app version, and the exact error message. Older JioCinema help pages directed users to in-app feedback, but the current support path and labels may have changed.

Do not use third-party JioCinema downloaders
Websites and apps advertising “JioCinema video downloads,” APK mirrors, stream converters, screen recorders, and browser extensions are not the official offline-viewing method. They can expose you to malware, misleading permissions, stolen account credentials, poor-quality files, and services that stop working without warning.
More importantly, Jiostar’s terms prohibit bypassing digital-rights-management or other access controls and prohibit copying, capturing, archiving, reproducing, or redistributing service content outside permitted use. The safe method is to download only when the official JioHotstar app offers its own Download control and to watch the result within that app.
Important India and regional-availability note
JioHotstar is the India-focused service created when JioCinema and Disney+ Hotstar were brought together. JioStar announced the transition on February 14, 2025. The catalogue, download rights, plans, and app availability may differ outside India, so readers in other countries should check the service available in their region rather than assuming that JioCinema or JioHotstar downloads work internationally.
