Amazon’s official help information says offline downloads are available in the Prime Video app on compatible Fire tablets, iPhones and iPads, Android devices, macOS computers, and Windows 10/11 computers. It also says that although the Android and Windows apps may let you select a storage location, Amazon does not recommend saving downloads to USB-connected drives. Amazon’s terms separately prohibit copying or transferring digital content except where permitted and prohibit attempts to bypass or defeat DRM and other content-protection systems.
What you can do instead: download for offline viewing

- Open the movie’s detail page.
- Choose Download, if that title and your account are eligible.
- Open the app’s Downloads area to watch it offline.
The exact buttons and download settings can vary by operating system, region, title, and app version. If there is no Download button, the movie may not be licensed for offline viewing, or the title may be unavailable for download on that device or account.
This creates an app-managed offline download—not a normal video file that appears in a folder for unrestricted copying. The download remains subject to Amazon’s device, account, membership, title, and licensing rules.
Why choosing USB storage does not make the movie portable
On some Android and Windows installations, Prime Video may expose a setting for choosing where downloads are stored. That option can be confusing: it concerns storage used by the Prime Video app, not permission to export the movie.
A USB flash drive is ordinary removable storage. A Prime Video offline download is protected, app-managed content. Even if data associated with the download is stored somewhere on a drive, that does not mean another device can identify it as a playable movie. It may depend on the original app, account authentication, encryption, licensing checks, and the device environment.

For that reason, selecting a USB drive in an app setting should not be treated as a reliable way to build a portable Prime Video library. Amazon specifically does not recommend saving Prime Video downloads to USB-connected drives.
Can you copy a Prime Video download from Windows or Android?
Windows 10 and Windows 11
The Prime Video app for Windows supports offline downloads for eligible titles. Depending on the app and current version, you may be able to choose a storage location. However, the downloaded content is still intended for playback through Prime Video, not for copying as a standard movie file to a USB stick.
Moving an app-managed download to another computer can also cause it to become unavailable because the destination may not have the required app data, account authorization, protection keys, or current viewing rights. A USB drive formatted for Windows does not change those restrictions.
Android phones and tablets
The Android Prime Video app may offer storage-location controls, particularly on devices with removable or expandable storage. Those controls do not grant a right to make a freely transferable copy. They only help the app manage its own offline content on a compatible device.

Android users should also distinguish between a USB drive being visible to the operating system and Prime Video supporting it as a download destination. A drive can be technically recognized by Android while still being unsuitable for Prime Video’s protected offline playback.
Can you play downloaded Prime Video movies on a TV?
Sometimes, but not by treating the USB drive as the solution. The practical options are:
- Use the Prime Video app on a compatible smart TV, streaming device, or game console and stream the movie normally when an internet connection is available.
- Play the offline download on the device where it was downloaded if that device and its connection support television playback.
- Use a compatible wired connection or adapter from a supported phone, tablet, or computer to a television, where the hardware, operating system, app, and content permit it.
Amazon says downloaded content cannot be played through Chromecast or AirPlay. Offline television playback therefore depends on the specific device and connection rather than on copying the download to a USB stick. Check compatibility for your phone, computer, adapter, television, and Prime Video app before buying hardware.
Do rental and purchased movies work differently?
Yes. “Available to download” does not mean “owned as an unrestricted file.” The rules depend on how you obtained the title.

If a download expires, your membership ends, the rental window closes, or Amazon loses the relevant rights, storing the associated data on a flash drive would not preserve viewing access.
When a USB flash drive really is useful
USB storage works well for ordinary video files that you are authorized to copy and that your playback device supports. Examples can include your own recordings, public-domain films, licensed production assets, and other DRM-free files whose owner permits copying.
For that separate use case, a USB flash drive for personal video files can be practical. Before transferring anything, check the television or media player’s supported file systems—such as FAT32 or exFAT—and video formats. A file can be legally transferable yet still fail to play because the television does not support its container, codec, audio format, resolution, or drive format.
Mobile-device users moving authorized ordinary video files may also consider a USB-C OTG flash drive, but compatibility varies. The phone must support USB host or OTG functionality, the connector must match, and the device’s file manager and playback software must support the files. None of this creates a supported method for exporting Prime Video downloads.

What not to do
Do not use DRM-removal tools, modified Prime Video applications, screen-recording workarounds, or instructions for locating and reconstructing protected cache files in order to make a USB copy. Amazon’s terms prohibit attempts to disable, bypass, modify, defeat, or circumvent DRM and other content-protection systems. Those methods may also violate copyright law or the terms attached to your account and the particular title.
“The file is already on my computer” is not a reliable legal or technical argument. A protected download may be stored locally so the authorized app can play it offline, but local storage does not establish permission to copy, convert, share, or play it elsewhere.

- No Download button: Check another title, confirm that you are signed in to the correct account, and verify that the app and device are supported. Some titles simply are not eligible for downloads in your region.
- Download will not play offline: Open Prime Video while online before traveling, confirm that the download is still within its viewing period, and check that your membership or rental has not changed.
- USB drive is not recognized: This is a storage or device-compatibility issue for ordinary files; it is not evidence that Prime Video downloads can be exported.
- TV cannot play the downloaded movie: Do not assume a USB copy will solve it. Use a supported Prime Video TV app or investigate a compatible wired device-to-TV connection. Downloaded content is not supported through Chromecast or AirPlay according to Amazon’s help information.
