4 Ways to Fix YouTube Not Playing Videos on a PC

YouTube videos not playing on a PC can result from a weak connection, outdated browser, corrupted cache, conflicting extensions, graphics settings, or Windows networking. Follow these four fixes from safest to most advanced.

When YouTube will not play videos on a PC, the cause is usually one of four areas: the internet connection, the browser or Windows state, cached data and extensions, or advanced graphics and network settings. Follow the fixes below in order, starting with tests that are easy to reverse.

Start by identifying what is failing

If YouTube will not play videos on your PC, do not begin by reinstalling random software. First determine whether the problem is your internet connection, browser, cached data, an extension, Windows networking, or the particular video.

  • Only one video fails: the video may be unavailable, restricted, or affected by an account or content issue.
  • All YouTube videos fail, but other sites work: focus on the browser, extensions, cookies, hardware acceleration, or YouTube-specific access.
  • Other websites also fail: troubleshoot the connection, router, Wi-Fi, Ethernet, firewall, or Windows network settings.
  • YouTube works in another browser or on another device: the original PC or browser is the likely source.

Work through these four fixes in order. The first steps are reversible and low-risk; the last step changes more advanced browser or Windows settings.

1. Check the connection and test a wired network

Open another website on the same PC. If it also loads slowly or fails, restart the modem and router, wait for the connection to return, and try YouTube again. If possible, test the PC on a different network, such as a phone hotspot. This quickly distinguishes a local connection problem from a browser or YouTube problem.

Compare your connection with YouTube’s approximate requirements

YouTube lists these approximate sustained speeds for different playback qualities:

Video quality Approximate sustained speed
360p 0.7 Mbps
480p 1.1 Mbps
720p 2.5 Mbps
1080p 5 Mbps
4K 20 Mbps

These are useful benchmarks, not guarantees. Wi-Fi interference, congestion, several people streaming at once, other downloads, and an overloaded PC can still cause buffering or prevent a video from starting. As a quick test, open the video’s settings menu, choose Quality, and select a lower resolution. If lower quality works, the connection may be too slow or inconsistent for the original setting.

Try Ethernet before changing complicated settings

If the computer has an Ethernet port, connect it directly to the router and retry the video. A wired connection removes Wi-Fi interference and is one of the clearest ways to test whether wireless instability is responsible.

If your PC lacks a network port, a compatible USB-to-Ethernet adapter can provide the same type of test. You do not need to buy one if another network or device is available for comparison.

2. Update and fully restart the browser and PC

An outdated browser, a long-running browser session, or excessive resource use can interfere with loading and playback. Close demanding applications and unused tabs, then update the browser before testing again.

Update Chrome

  1. Open Chrome.
  2. Select the three-dot More menu in the upper-right corner.
  3. Choose Help and then About Google Chrome.
  4. Allow Chrome to check for updates. If an update is ready, select Relaunch.

After Chrome restarts, close it completely and open it again. Restart Windows too, particularly if the PC or browser has been running for a long time. Then test a YouTube video with only one or two tabs open.

Use the equivalent update screen if you use Edge, Firefox, or another supported browser. Updating does not guarantee a fix; it refreshes the browser’s software and can resolve compatibility or stale-session problems.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

3. Clear cached data and isolate browser extensions

Old cached files or damaged cookies can cause a page to load incorrectly, display a blank player, or repeatedly return to a loading screen. Browser extensions can also interfere with YouTube scripts, advertising components, or video playback. Ad blockers and privacy or script-blocking extensions deserve particular attention.

Clear cache and cookies in Chrome

  1. Select Chrome’s three-dot More menu.
  2. Choose Delete browsing data.
  3. Select an appropriate Time range. If the problem began recently, start with a shorter period; use All time only when necessary.
  4. Select Cached images and files. Select Cookies and other site data if the problem continues or you need to reset YouTube’s stored site data.
  5. Choose Delete data, reopen YouTube, and sign in again if required.

Clearing cookies can sign you out of websites and remove saved site preferences. It does not delete your YouTube account, subscriptions, or uploaded videos, but you may need to set website preferences again.

Use Incognito mode as a controlled test

Open an Incognito window in Chrome and visit YouTube. Try the same video. If it plays there, the normal browser profile—most often an extension or stored site data—is probably involved.

You can also temporarily disable extensions from Chrome’s extensions management page and test YouTube again. Re-enable them one at a time. When playback fails again, you have identified the likely conflict. This is better than permanently disabling every extension, because it preserves useful browser protections and makes the cause easier to confirm.

4. Test hardware acceleration and use Windows Network reset only as a last resort

When the connection and browser profile appear normal, test Chrome’s graphics-rendering path. Hardware acceleration can occasionally conflict with a graphics driver or particular PC configuration.

Temporarily turn off hardware acceleration

  1. Open Chrome’s three-dot More menu and choose Settings.
  2. Select System.
  3. Turn off Use hardware acceleration when available.
  4. Select Relaunch when Chrome offers it, then test YouTube.

This is a diagnostic experiment, not a setting everyone should permanently disable. If it fixes playback, update the graphics driver and Chrome when practical, then test whether hardware acceleration can be enabled again. If turning it off changes nothing, restore the original setting rather than leaving it altered without a reason.

Check security software and firewall rules

Temporarily review firewall or antivirus settings if YouTube fails while other browsers or networks work normally. Security software may be blocking browser traffic or scripts. Do not leave protection disabled as a permanent solution; if disabling a feature identifies the cause, add an appropriate browser or network exception according to the security product’s documentation.

Use Windows Network reset only after simpler fixes

Windows Network reset restores networking settings to their defaults. It can help when ordinary connection troubleshooting has failed, but it is not a routine YouTube fix.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

In Windows 11, open:

Settings > Network & internet > Advanced network settings > Network reset

Save your work first and read the confirmation screen. Network reset removes installed network adapters and restores their settings. You may need to reconnect to Wi-Fi, reinstall or configure VPN software, and set up Hyper-V virtual switches or other networking tools again. Use it only after checking the router, connection, browser, extensions, and security software.

When none of the four fixes works

Use controlled comparisons rather than repeating the same repair:

  1. Try another browser on the same PC. If it works, concentrate on the original browser’s profile, extensions, cookies, or graphics settings.
  2. Try another network. If YouTube works through a hotspot but not your normal connection, investigate the router, ISP, Wi-Fi interference, firewall, or network policy.
  3. Try the same account and video on another supported device. If only one video fails everywhere, it is more likely a content or availability issue than a PC failure.
  4. Compare all videos. If every video fails across browsers and networks, the problem may involve the account, device, network policy, or a temporary service-side condition that cannot be repaired locally.

Avoid repeatedly installing unverified “video repair” utilities. Official browser, Windows, and YouTube troubleshooting should come first. If the PC is generally slow even outside YouTube, an optional third-party maintenance utility may help investigate broader Windows performance issues, but it should not be presented as an official YouTube fix or as proof that playback will be repaired.

Quick decision checklist

  • Other websites fail too: restart the router, test another network, and try Ethernet.
  • Only high-quality playback fails: lower the quality and check sustained connection speed.
  • Only the normal browser fails: update it, clear data, and test Incognito mode.
  • Incognito works: isolate extensions one at a time.
  • Another browser works: troubleshoot the original browser’s profile or rendering settings.
  • Turning off hardware acceleration works: investigate graphics-driver and browser compatibility.
  • Nothing works across browsers, networks, and devices: seek YouTube, browser, device, or network support rather than applying increasingly invasive local changes.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does only one YouTube video fail to play?

If only one YouTube video will not play, test other videos and the same video on another device. A single failure may be caused by availability, restrictions, or an account or content issue rather than your PC.

Can an Incognito window diagnose YouTube playback problems?

Yes. Incognito mode is a useful test because it helps separate normal-profile problems from connection problems. If the video plays there, investigate extensions and stored browser data.

Should I use Windows Network reset to fix YouTube?

Use it only as a last resort. In Windows 11, Network reset removes installed network adapters and restores networking settings to defaults. VPNs, Hyper-V virtual switches, Wi-Fi connections, and other network software may need to be configured again.

The Bottom Line

The safest escalation path is connection first, then browser and PC restart, then cached data and extensions, and finally hardware acceleration or Windows networking. Ethernet is a useful diagnostic test—not a universal YouTube fix—and Network reset should be reserved for cases where simpler checks have failed.
