Anne Burrell was found “unconscious and unresponsive” at her Brooklyn home on June 17, 2025, and was pronounced dead at the scene. Police had not established a cause of death at that time. More than five weeks later, New York City’s Office of Chief Medical Examiner determined that she died from acute intoxication caused by the combined effects of diphenhydramine, ethanol, cetirizine, and amphetamine, with suicide listed as the manner of death.
Anne Burrell was found at her Brooklyn home on the morning of June 17, 2025, after police responded to a 911 call shortly before 8 a.m. Police described the 55-year-old chef as “unconscious and unresponsive,” and she was pronounced dead at the scene.
That wording described what responders encountered. It did not establish why Burrell died. The cause and manner of death were determined later, after the autopsy and toxicology process. On July 24, 2025, reporting that cited confirmation from New York City’s Office of Chief Medical Examiner said Burrell died from acute intoxication caused by the combined effects of diphenhydramine, ethanol, cetirizine, and amphetamine. The medical examiner listed the manner of death as suicide.
What “unconscious and unresponsive” meant
“Unconscious and unresponsive” was the condition reported by police at the scene. It was not a diagnosis and was not, by itself, evidence of an overdose, cardiac arrest, suicide, or any other specific medical event.

Contemporaneous reports said an autopsy would be performed and that the cause of death had not yet been established. Some early accounts attributed to police or internal-document reporting a possible cardiac-arrest description in the 911 call, a possible overdose investigation, and pills found at the scene. Those were provisional or attributed details, not the final medical-examiner conclusion.
The most accurate summary is therefore two-part: police initially reported that Burrell was found unconscious and unresponsive and pronounced dead at the scene; the medical examiner later ruled that she died from acute intoxication involving four substances and classified the manner as suicide.
What the medical examiner determined
| Medical-examiner finding | Determination |
|---|---|
| Cause of death | Acute intoxication due to the combined effects of diphenhydramine, ethanol, cetirizine, and amphetamine |
| Manner of death | Suicide |
The wording matters. The ruling identified the combined effects of diphenhydramine, ethanol, cetirizine, and amphetamine; it did not say that one of those substances alone was the cause. The available determination also does not justify adding unsupported claims about dosage, timing, prescriptions, intent beyond the official manner classification, or the precise sequence of events.

In death investigations, cause refers to the medical condition or injury that resulted in death. Manner is the official classification of how that cause came about, such as natural causes, accident, suicide, homicide, or an undetermined manner. The two findings answer different questions.

Training and restaurant career
According to the Culinary Institute of America’s memorial biography, Burrell completed her culinary training at the CIA and graduated in 1996. She then spent a year in Italy at the Italian Culinary Institute for Foreigners, working in Umbria and Tuscany. After returning to New York, she worked at restaurants including Felidia and Savoy.
That background helps explain the combination that defined her public career: formal culinary training, restaurant experience, teaching, television, and philanthropy. She brought professional technique to entertainment programming without presenting cooking as inaccessible to ordinary home cooks.

Her cookbooks
Burrell was also the author of two books identified by Penguin Random House as New York Times bestsellers. For readers who want to revisit her culinary work, Anne Burrell’s cookbook Cook Like a Rock Star was published by Clarkson Potter on October 4, 2011. The 256-page book contains 125 recipes along with lessons and culinary techniques, reflecting the instructional approach that also shaped her television work.
Her second cookbook, Own Your Kitchen: Recipes to Inspire & Empower, continued that focus on helping home cooks become more capable and confident. Editions, availability, and prices can vary by retailer, so readers checking the books should verify the edition before purchasing.
Her final Food Network programming
Burrell’s Food Network career lasted roughly two decades and included instructional shows, cooking competitions, and reality formats. After her death, ABC News reported that Food Network planned to air her final season of Worst Cooks in America, including a final episode scheduled for July 28, 2025.

The programming remains part of Burrell’s television legacy, but current access should be checked through the relevant official service rather than assumed from an older schedule.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWhy early headlines and later reports differed
The difference reflects the normal progression of a death investigation. Responders and police can report a person’s condition and the circumstances known at the scene. The medical examiner requires an autopsy, toxicology testing, and review before issuing an official cause and manner.
That is why “unconscious and unresponsive” was accurate as an initial scene description but incomplete as an explanation of the death. Early stories published while the investigation was pending should not be read as contradicting the later ruling; they were reporting what was known at different points in the process.

Similarly, later media coverage of alleged police-document contents should be kept in its proper category. A reported note or journal entry is not the same thing as a medical-examiner finding, and it should not be used to speculate about Burrell’s motives or private mental state. The official manner classification and the confirmed cause are the authoritative findings for explaining how her death was recorded.
Responsible coverage of Burrell’s death
Coverage of suicide should be factual, restrained, and free of unnecessary detail. It should not treat the scene wording as sensational evidence, describe methods in detail, reproduce alleged private writings, or imply a motive that authoritative records do not establish.

If there is immediate danger, call 911 or the appropriate local emergency number. Readers elsewhere should contact their local crisis service or emergency provider.
Reporting basis
The scene description and pending-investigation chronology were based on contemporaneous police and medical-examiner reporting. The cause and manner were based on later reporting citing confirmation from New York City’s Office of Chief Medical Examiner. Burrell’s career and television work were documented by Food Network, her training and restaurant background by the Culinary Institute of America, her books by Penguin Random House, and the 2025 final-programming plan by ABC News. Later police-document claims were treated as secondary-source reporting by People and Us Weekly rather than as new medical-examiner findings.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Police initially said Anne Burrell was found “unconscious and unresponsive” at her Brooklyn home on June 17, 2025, but that scene description did not establish the cause of death. The later New York City medical-examiner determination was acute intoxication from the combined effects of diphenhydramine, ethanol, cetirizine, and amphetamine, with suicide listed as the manner of death.
