During the final portion of the flight, the pilot reported losing the autopilot and declared an emergency. When asked where he wanted to land, the pilot said he was trying to regain control. The preliminary account records no further communications after that exchange.
The NTSB classified the flight as a Part 91 personal flight. The aircraft was destroyed and all seven occupants suffered fatal injuries.
The NTSB report was preliminary
The preliminary report describes the known sequence of events; it does not establish a final probable cause. The most accurate summary is that the pilot reported losing the autopilot before the aircraft lost control. That should not be rewritten as a definitive finding of pilot error, mechanical failure, weather, icing or any other cause unless a later final NTSB report supports it.
Likewise, the preliminary record does not justify claims about the victims’ final moments or an exact breakup mechanism. It establishes the radio transmissions, flight-track information and fatal outcome, but investigators’ preliminary findings can change as the investigation progresses.

Amber Nelon Kistler
Amber Nelon Kistler, Kelly and Jason’s daughter, was also a member of The Nelons. Her death meant that three generations of the family act’s performing and creative core were lost in the crash.
The other performing member, Autumn Nelon Streetman, was not on the aircraft. Contemporary reports identified her as the family member who issued a statement after the crash.

Who else died in the crash?
Seven people were aboard the aircraft. In addition to Kelly Nelon Clark, Jason Clark and Amber Nelon Kistler, the occupants were identified in contemporary reporting as Amber’s husband, Nathan Kistler; family friend and group assistant Melodi Hodges; and pilot Larry Haynie and his wife, Melissa Haynie.
The NTSB preliminary report establishes the number of occupants and fatalities and identifies the aircraft. The names of the other occupants come from contemporary reporting, so a later authoritative record should be checked for any final confirmation of the complete list.
Why were the Nelons traveling to Montana?
The group was traveling to take part in the Gaither Homecoming Alaska Cruise. The cruise itinerary listed The Nelons among the performers for the July 27–August 3, 2024 sailing from Seattle.
That itinerary explains why several family members and associates were traveling together. It does not mean that the cruise operator controlled the aircraft or caused the flight. According to the NTSB’s preliminary account, the aircraft was being operated as a Part 91 personal flight.

The Nelons’ place in gospel music
The Nelons were more than a touring quartet assembled around a single recording project. They were a multigenerational family ensemble whose identity rested on shared vocals, songwriting, musicianship and ministry-oriented performances.
The group’s musical style drew from gospel, hymns, a cappella singing, Americana, folk and inspirational music. The family’s official biography describes Kelly and Jason as leaders, with daughters Amber and Autumn contributing vocals; Autumn’s mandolin playing was also part of the group’s sound.
The Gospel Music Association announced The Nelons as 2016 inductees into the Gospel Music Hall of Fame. The announcement also highlighted the group’s chart history, including “Come Morning,” which reached No. 1 three times in non-consecutive months.
For that reason, the crash removed not simply three individual touring musicians but three central members of a family act whose artistic and public identity was inseparable from its shared history.
Recorded music and the group’s continuing legacy
Listeners seeking to revisit the group’s recordings may encounter Loving You as an audio CD associated with The Nelons. Before purchasing, check the live retailer listing for the exact edition, seller, price and availability; an artist-page reference is not the same as a guaranteed in-stock product.
The group’s official store also documents Peace At Last as The Nelons’ first vinyl album since the 1980s. The store page currently labels the vinyl out of stock, so it should not be described as readily available without a new check.

The family’s musical story continued separately through Autumn Nelon Streetman. On July 24, 2026, Gaither Music announced her single I’ll Find You, describing it as a deeply personal release reflecting on the loss of her family and close friends.

That release belongs in the story of the family’s continuing musical legacy, not in the evidence about what caused the 2024 crash. The two subjects should remain clearly separated: the NTSB record concerns the accident investigation, while Streetman’s later music reflects remembrance and life after the loss.
What remains to be confirmed
- Whether the NTSB has issued a final report superseding the preliminary account.
- The final authoritative listing and spelling of all seven occupants.
- Whether investigators ultimately determined why the aircraft lost control after the reported autopilot problem.
- Current availability and edition details for recordings such as Loving You and Peace At Last.
Until a final investigative finding is verified, the responsible account remains limited: on July 26, 2024, a Pilatus PC-12/47E carrying seven people crashed near Recluse, Wyoming, after the pilot reported losing the autopilot and declared an emergency. All seven occupants died, including three members of The Nelons.
