I Am Legend 2: Confirmation, Cast, Story and Everything We Know

I Am Legend 2 is a real Warner Bros. sequel in development, but it is not finished, filming, or scheduled for release. Will Smith is attached to return as Dr. Robert Neville, while Michael B. The sequel will continue from the 2007 film’s alternate ending—not its theatrical ending—and is expected to begin a few decades after the original. Jordan’s character reportedly leads a new settlement in Connecticut, but his official name and the rest of the story have not been announced.

Is I Am Legend 2 confirmed?

Yes, but “confirmed” does not mean that the film has entered production. Warner Bros. announced the project in March 2022, with Will Smith returning and Michael B. Jordan joining the cast. Smith and Jordan were also announced as producers, with Akiva Goldsman returning as writer and producer. The original sequel announcement established the project, but did not include a release date or production schedule.

The most recent major update came in April 2026, when Steven Caple Jr. confirmed that he was officially developing the film for Warner Bros. Caple previously directed Creed II and Transformers: Rise of the Beasts. His update described I Am Legend 2 as still in development, so reports claiming that the movie has already completed filming or production should be treated as premature. The Playlist’s report on Caple’s update and Collider’s reported confirmation are among the latest public sources on its status.

I Am Legend 2 release date: Is it coming in 2026?

No release date or release window has been announced. Warner Bros. has not published a theatrical date, and there is no publicly confirmed timetable for filming or post-production.

That means claims of a 2026, late-2026, or early-2027 release are speculation rather than confirmed scheduling. A project still described as being in development would normally need to move through casting, pre-production, filming, editing, visual effects, marketing, and distribution planning before a dependable release date could be established. GamesRadar’s release-date reporting likewise notes that no official date has been announced.

Cast: Who is returning?

Will Smith as Dr. Robert Neville

Will Smith is attached to reprise Dr. Robert Neville, the virologist and central survivor of the 2007 film. His return is possible because the sequel follows the alternate ending, in which Neville survives and leaves his fortified New York home with Anna and Ethan.

In the theatrical ending, Neville sacrifices himself while protecting the cure. The alternate ending changes his fate and also changes what he understands about the infected people known as Darkseekers. Michael B. Jordan in an undisclosed role

Michael B. Jordan is attached to star and produce, but his character’s official name has not been revealed. Will Smith said in an April 2025 appearance on Drink Champs that Jordan does not play Neville’s son. Smith described the character as the head of a new settlement in Connecticut.

That is the most specific publicly reported description of Jordan’s role, but it is not a complete official character biography. The sequel has not established whether Jordan’s character is connected to Neville before the events of the film, how the Connecticut settlement operates, or what relationship it has with the Darkseekers. ComingSoon’s report on Smith’s comments is the basis for the settlement and “not Neville’s son” details.

No other cast members are confirmed

Beyond Smith and Jordan, no additional actors have been reliably announced for the sequel. That includes performers associated with the first film, such as Alice Braga and Charlie Tahan, as well as names appearing in online rumor lists.

There is currently no official confirmation that Anna, Ethan, Marley, or any other 2007-film character will return. Lists that include Alice Braga, Charlie Tahan, Willow Smith, Emma Thompson, or other performers should not be treated as confirmed casting unless Warner Bros. or a credible trade publication provides a new announcement. Current project credits can change during development and should not be confused with a complete, final cast announcement.

Which ending is canon for the sequel?

The sequel will use the alternate ending of the 2007 film as its continuity. This is the version released with home-video editions in which Neville recognizes that the Darkseekers are intelligent, emotional beings with their own social organization.

After realizing that the female Darkseeker he captured is important to the group, Neville returns her and leaves alive with Anna and Ethan. The theatrical ending, by contrast, has Neville die while defending the cure.

Goldsman has said that the sequel follows the alternate ending rather than the theatrical conclusion. This does not mean the theatrical cut has been erased from the history of the franchise or removed from circulation. It means that the sequel begins from a different story branch: Neville is alive, and the Darkseekers are not simply presented as mindless monsters. What will the story be about?

There is no complete, official synopsis yet. The confirmed and publicly described framework includes several elements:

1. Neville survived the alternate ending of the original film.
2. The story begins a few decades after the events of the 2007 movie.

Goldsman has cited The Last of Us as an influence, particularly its depiction of a world decades after civilization’s collapse and its images of nature reclaiming abandoned human spaces. That comparison indicates a broader, more developed post-apocalyptic setting than the isolated New York survival story in the first film, but it is not a plot synopsis.

There is no verified information about the main antagonist, the precise condition of New York, the structure of the Connecticut settlement, or whether the story will return primarily to Manhattan. Claims that provide a detailed plot, named villains, or a complete explanation of Neville and Jordan’s relationship go beyond what has been officially reported.

How the sequel connects to Richard Matheson’s novel

I Am Legend 2 is a continuation of the 2007 film, not a direct screen adaptation of Richard Matheson’s 1954 novel. However, Goldsman has said that the sequel will move closer to some of the book’s ideas.

The most important thematic connection is the question of who should be considered the dominant species—and whether Neville’s understanding of the infected was morally incomplete. In Matheson’s novel, the perspective on the “monsters” complicates the assumption that humanity is automatically entitled to rule or survive unchanged.

The alternate ending makes that thematic direction possible in the movie continuity. Neville learns that the Darkseekers possess intelligence, emotion, and social bonds, creating the possibility of a conflict based not only on survival but also on competing claims to the future. The film remains a sequel to the Will Smith movie rather than a scene-by-scene adaptation of Matheson’s book.

Was I Am Legend 2 originally planned as a prequel?

Yes. Will Smith said the creative team initially considered a prequel. That approach would have shown events before or around the collapse depicted in the first movie, but it would not have naturally allowed Smith to continue as the living Neville.

Goldsman later proposed a sequel built from the alternate ending. That solution preserved Neville as a surviving character and created a way to expand the world several decades after the original. The current project is therefore a sequel, not a prequel.
