The Fantastic Four
Pedro Pascal as Reed Richards / Mister Fantastic
Reed Richards is the team’s scientific leader and one of Marvel’s most celebrated super-geniuses. As Mister Fantastic, he can stretch and reshape his body, using elastic limbs and flexible form both in combat and to solve practical problems.

- Set against the backdrop of a ?60s-inspired, retro-futuristic world, Marvel?s First Family faces a daunting challenge. Forced to balance being heroes with their family bond, they must defend Earth from a space god and his enigmatic herald.
Pascal’s Reed is not defined only by his intelligence or powers. He is a husband, father and public figure who feels the weight of keeping his family safe. That responsibility creates an important tension: Reed is capable of thinking through extraordinary scientific problems, but no calculation can make the dangers facing his family completely predictable.
His marriage to Sue is central to the team’s structure. Reed may be the group’s technical leader, but First Steps presents leadership as a shared responsibility rather than a job that belongs to him alone.
Vanessa Kirby as Sue Storm / Invisible Woman
Sue Storm is the team’s emotional and strategic center—and a formidable superhero in her own right. Her powers allow her to turn invisible and create force fields, giving her both stealth and defensive abilities. The force fields also make her one of the team’s most versatile members: she can protect people, control the battlefield and confront threats without relying on brute strength.
Kirby’s Sue balances public heroism with major family responsibilities. She is Reed’s wife and Johnny’s older sister, and those relationships affect how she approaches danger and decision-making. The film does not treat her as merely the person supporting Reed’s ambitions. Sue has her own authority within the team and often provides the judgment needed when Reed’s scientific reasoning becomes too narrow.
Her relationship with Johnny adds a sibling dimension to the Fantastic Four. Sue understands his impulsive, high-energy personality better than anyone, but that familiarity does not make the pair immune to conflict—particularly when the team’s public responsibilities collide with personal risk.
Joseph Quinn as Johnny Storm / Human Torch
Johnny Storm is Sue’s younger brother and the team’s most openly charismatic member. His Human Torch abilities include igniting his body, flying and controlling intense flame. Those powers make him a spectacular aerial fighter, but they also reflect his personality: Johnny is energetic, confident and drawn to the attention that comes with being a famous superhero.
Quinn’s Johnny brings youthful momentum to a team whose other members are often preoccupied with responsibility. His enthusiasm can lighten the atmosphere, while his instinct to act quickly can create complications. The important relationship is not simply “hotheaded hero versus sensible teammates”; Johnny is also part of the family’s emotional fabric, and his choices have consequences for Sue, Reed and Ben.
Ebon Moss-Bachrach as Ben Grimm / The Thing
Ben Grimm is Reed’s longtime friend and a founding member of the Fantastic Four. His transformation into the rock-skinned Thing gives him extraordinary strength and durability, making him the team’s physical powerhouse.
Ben’s character is also where the film most clearly explores the difference between public heroism and private identity. The Thing is an instantly recognizable symbol of strength, but Ben remains a person negotiating what his transformation means for friendship, belonging and ordinary human connection. His bond with Reed anchors the group: it predates the Fantastic Four and gives the team’s family dynamic a history beyond superpowers.
Rank #2
- Set against the backdrop of a ?60s-inspired, retro-futuristic world, Marvel?s First Family faces a daunting challenge. Forced to balance being heroes with their family bond, they must defend Earth from a space god and his enigmatic herald.
That friendship also complicates Reed’s role. Reed is not just leading a teammate into danger; he is making decisions that affect someone who has trusted him for years. Ben’s personal storyline, including his connection to Rachel Rozman, gives the larger cosmic conflict a grounded human counterpoint.
Galactus and the Silver Surfer
Ralph Ineson as Galactus
Galactus is a ravenous cosmic entity whose threat operates on a planetary scale. Marvel’s presentation of the character emphasizes a space god who consumes worlds, making him fundamentally different from a conventional villain seeking money, revenge or political control.
That distinction matters to the story. The Fantastic Four are public defenders in their world, but public recognition and advanced technology do not make Earth equipped to negotiate with a being of Galactus’s magnitude. His arrival turns the team’s family-centered heroism into a question of whether four people can protect an entire planet from a cosmic force.
Ralph Ineson plays the film’s page-to-screen version of Galactus. He is the central existential threat, not simply another opponent for The Thing to fight or another scientific puzzle for Reed to solve.
Julia Garner as Shalla-Bal / Silver Surfer
Julia Garner plays Shalla-Bal, this film’s version of the Silver Surfer and Galactus’s Herald. She is depicted as a steely wanderer who serves Galactus while potentially concealing motives of her own.
It is important not to replace Shalla-Bal with Norrin Radd when describing this movie. Norrin Radd is the better-known Silver Surfer identity in Marvel Comics, but First Steps uses Shalla-Bal for its cinematic version of the Herald. The distinction is part of the film’s adaptation rather than a minor naming variation.
The Silver Surfer functions as more than an extension of Galactus’s power. Her presence gives the Fantastic Four a figure who can communicate the scale of the danger while retaining an element of uncertainty. The question is not only what Galactus wants, but how completely his Herald shares his purpose.

Supporting characters
Paul Walter Hauser as Harvey Elder / Mole Man
Paul Walter Hauser is credited as Harvey Elder, also known as Mole Man. He is a supporting Fantastic Four figure rather than the film’s primary villain.
Mole Man provides a grounded, subterranean counterpoint to Galactus’s cosmic scale. Where Galactus threatens worlds from beyond Earth, Harvey Elder is associated with the hidden spaces beneath it. His inclusion broadens the film’s sense of the Fantastic Four’s world and connects the team to the strange, less visible corners of their own planet.
Sarah Niles as Lynne Nichols
Sarah Niles is credited as Lynne Nichols. Secondary post-release cast listings identify Nichols as the Fantastic Four’s chief of staff, making her an operational or administrative figure around the team.
Marvel’s public movie page confirms Niles’s participation but does not provide the character name in its main synopsis. For that reason, “credited as Lynne Nichols” is the most precise description, rather than presenting her as one of the film’s central heroes.
Natasha Lyonne as Rachel Rozman
Natasha Lyonne is credited as Rachel Rozman. Post-release cast reporting connects Rachel to Ben Grimm’s personal storyline, but she is a supporting character rather than a member of the superpowered quartet.
As with Lynne Nichols, the character name comes from post-release credit identification rather than Marvel’s primary public synopsis. Her importance is best understood through her connection to Ben, not by inflating her into a principal member of the team.
H.E.R.B.I.E.
H.E.R.B.I.E. appears as the Fantastic Four’s robot companion within the film’s retro-futuristic team environment. The character helps express the group’s science-fiction identity and gives the family another presence in its day-to-day operations.
H.E.R.B.I.E. should be described as a supporting companion, not as a fifth superpowered member of the Fantastic Four. Detailed voice-credit attribution should be checked against the final on-screen credits before naming a performer.

The clearest way to understand the ensemble is as a family under pressure. Reed and Sue must combine leadership with parenthood. Sue and Johnny bring a sibling relationship into every team decision. Reed and Ben’s longstanding friendship gives the group its emotional foundation. Together, the four must defend Earth while maintaining the bonds that made them a family in the first place.
This emphasis also distinguishes First Steps from a straightforward origin retelling. The film takes place in a 1960s-inspired retro-futuristic setting where the Fantastic Four are already established public heroes. It is not primarily about watching four strangers discover their powers for the first time. Instead, the drama comes from seeing an experienced, visible family confront a threat far beyond the scale of its previous responsibilities.
That structure gives each cast member a distinct function:
Rank #4
- Reed represents intellect, planning and the anxiety of responsibility.
- Sue combines emotional intelligence, strategic leadership and powerful protection.
- Johnny supplies energy, spectacle and the perspective of a younger family member.
- Ben grounds the team in loyalty, physical courage and questions of identity.
- Galactus and Shalla-Bal test whether a close-knit family can respond to a threat that cannot be handled like an ordinary supervillain.

Spoiler warning: Franklin Richards and post-credit material
Spoilers follow. This section is intentionally brief, but it discusses material that viewers who have not seen the film may wish to avoid.
Franklin Richards and post-credit material are part of the film’s broader character conversation and should not be treated as ordinary cast-table details. If you are preparing a fully spoiler-free guide, stop before this heading. Any discussion of Franklin, the post-credit scenes or their implications should be separated from the main cast reference so readers can make an informed choice.
Announced but absent: John Malkovich
Production-history note: John Malkovich should not be listed as a released-film character without confirmation from the final credits.
Malkovich was associated with the project in production-era reporting, but the available post-release cast references indicate that the announced role was cut. He therefore does not belong in the final cast list above. If discussed, he should be labeled as an announced-but-absent performer and treated as production history, not as a character who appears in The Fantastic Four: First Steps.
