NYT Connections answers for March 9, 2026

Yellow: Starting with the same sound, spelled differently

WAREHOUSE, WEARABLE, WEREWOLF, WHEREFORE

This is a sound-based group rather than a meaning-based one. Each word begins with an approximate “wear” or “where” sound:

  • WAREhouse
  • WEARable
  • WEREwolf
  • WHEREfore

The spellings differ, and the words have unrelated meanings, but their initial sounds create the connection. This is the puzzle’s homophone-style category.

Green: Metaphors for public scrutiny

FISHBOWL, HOT SEAT, MICROSCOPE, SPOTLIGHT

All four can describe being subjected to unusually close attention:

  • Someone living in a fishbowl has little privacy and is constantly observed.
  • A person in the hot seat is under pressure, often while answering difficult questions.
  • Putting something under the microscope means examining it very closely.
  • Being in the spotlight means receiving prominent public attention.

The expressions are not exact synonyms in every context, but they share the idea of exposure, examination, or scrutiny.

Blue: Muppet characters

ANIMAL, BEAKER, FOZZIE, GONZO

These are all recognizable characters from The Muppets:

  • Animal is the manic drummer associated with Dr. Teeth and the Electric Mayhem.
  • Beaker is the anxious laboratory assistant who often communicates through distressed noises.
  • Fozzie is the comedian and performer commonly known as Fozzie Bear.
  • Gonzo is the eccentric performer known for unusual stunts and oddball acts.

This is likely the most direct category once the four names are recognized together.

Purple: They feature a boss

COMPANY, E STREET BAND, MAFIA, VIDEO GAME

This is the broadest and trickiest group. “Boss” means something different in each case:

  • A company can have a boss or person in charge.
  • The E Street Band is associated with Bruce Springsteen, whose famous nickname is “The Boss.”
  • The Mafia is commonly portrayed as having a boss at the top of its organization.
  • A video game may contain a boss character or a boss fight.

E STREET BAND is the main red herring. It may initially suggest a category involving bands or music, but its connection here is Bruce Springsteen’s nickname. VIDEO GAME completes the set through the gaming term “boss fight,” rather than through a particular game title.

Why this puzzle was difficult

The yellow group asks you to hear a connection that is easy to miss when you focus only on spelling. “Warehouse,” “wearable,” “werewolf,” and “wherefore” do not appear related on the page, but their opening sounds point toward the same answer.

The purple group uses four different senses of “boss”: an employer or manager, a rock musician’s nickname, a criminal-organization leader, and a powerful video-game opponent. That kind of category is especially difficult because the words do not belong to one obvious subject area.

The green group also contains overlapping possibilities. “Hot seat,” “spotlight,” and “under the microscope” can all describe public pressure or attention, while “fishbowl” adds the idea of being observed without privacy. The Muppets group is comparatively straightforward, but players may want to remove those four character names before testing the more abstract categories.
