The Suicide Squad (2021) First Reviews: Hilarious, Brilliantly Acted, and Entertainingly Gory

James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad is a hysterically vulgar, brilliantly acted, emotionally warmer, and far gorier correction to the 2016 film—with a genuinely expendable ensemble.

James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad (2021) was received as a vivid correction to the muddled 2016 film: funnier, more coherent, more fully acted, and dramatically gorier. The early reviews praised its huge ensemble, its tonal confidence, and its willingness to make violence part of the story’s emotional stakes—not merely a marketing flourish.

Verdict: The first reviews of The Suicide Squad (2021) were broadly enthusiastic for good reason. James Gunn’s film is a much more confident, character-driven correction to the 2016 movie: hysterically vulgar, unusually well acted, politically pointed, and so graphically violent that the comparison to Deadpool can sound almost conservative. Its gore is not just decoration. The possibility that nearly anyone can die gives the film’s large ensemble real suspense.

That enthusiasm comes with an important qualification. This is a loud, sprawling, aggressively R-rated war-comedy about incarcerated people coerced into a deniable government mission. The same tonal whiplash that some critics found exhilarating—jokes beside battlefield slaughter, tenderness beside grotesque creature violence—may strike other viewers as excessive or structurally loose.

Content warning: The film contains graphic violence and gore, pervasive profanity, sexual references, drug use, and brief graphic nudity. It is not a family superhero movie.[CIT-007][CIT-008]

What is The Suicide Squad about?

Written and directed by James Gunn, The Suicide Squad follows a new group of Belle Reve prisoners recruited by Amanda Waller for Task Force X. Their assignment takes them to Corto Maltese, a remote island destabilized by political upheaval, where they must complete a mission that the government wants to keep deniable. The principal squad members include Bloodsport, Peacemaker, Harley Quinn, Ratcatcher 2, King Shark, Polka-Dot Man, Rick Flag, and several other incarcerated operatives.[CIT-003]

The film opened in the United States on August 5, 2021, with its theatrical and HBO Max rollout promoted for August 6.[CIT-004][CIT-005] It retains characters from the 2016 Suicide Squad, including Harley Quinn, Rick Flag, Captain Boomerang, and Amanda Waller, but it is not a conventional direct sequel. It is better understood as a partial continuation or soft reboot: familiar characters and history remain, while Gunn introduces a substantially different roster and tone.

You do not need to see the 2016 film to understand this one. The premise is explained quickly, and the new movie is designed to establish its own rules—most importantly, that Task Force X members are genuinely expendable.[CIT-012]

Why early critics responded so strongly

1. The comedy has a clear identity

The most immediate change from the earlier film is tonal confidence. Gunn’s version knows exactly what kind of comic-book movie it wants to be: filthy, absurd, sentimental, grotesque, and willing to turn a ridiculous joke into a moment of genuine feeling without pausing to apologize for either side.

The humor comes from collision. Childish banter can be followed by battlefield carnage. A character’s ridiculous superpower can conceal trauma or shame. A supposedly fearsome villain can be distracted by something emotionally simple. The movie’s jokes are not separate from its violence; they are often staged alongside it. Rotten Tomatoes’ early-review roundup emphasized this combination of comedy and brutality, which many critics found more coherent than the tonal shifts in the 2016 film.[CIT-001]

That does not mean every gag works for every viewer. The film’s vulgarity is pervasive, and some jokes are deliberately juvenile. But the excess is part of the design rather than evidence that the movie has lost control of itself.

2. The ensemble is the real star

Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn remains a major attraction, but the film’s success does not depend on her. Gunn spreads the attention across a large cast and gives even strange, apparently disposable characters a recognizable emotional function.

  • Idris Elba’s Bloodsport supplies the grounded center. His damaged-father storyline gives the film a human scale and keeps the mission from becoming only a parade of comic-book abnormalities.
  • Daniela Melchior’s Ratcatcher 2 brings much of the story’s tenderness. Her compassion is not treated as weakness; it becomes one of the film’s moral forces.
  • David Dastmalchian’s Polka-Dot Man turns a deliberately ridiculous character concept into a portrait of shame, illness, and self-loathing. The performance is funny, but the underlying pain is not played as a throwaway gag.
  • John Cena’s Peacemaker embodies grotesque patriotism and toxic machismo. His insistence that peace can justify almost anything makes him both a comic antagonist and a pointed parody of militarized righteousness.
  • Sylvester Stallone’s King Shark could easily have become a one-note cute animal. Instead, his vocal performance makes the character funny, threatening, needy, and unpredictable.

RogerEbert.com identified Bloodsport, Peacemaker, Polka-Dot Man, Ratcatcher 2, and King Shark as the film’s emotional and comic center.[CIT-002][CIT-006] The breadth of that center matters. Because the movie invests in characters who seem like expendable joke machines, the squad’s casualties can carry more weight than expected. DC’s production coverage also confirms that Gunn deliberately built the roster around contrasting dramatic functions and accepted that many members would not survive.[CIT-005]

The gore is a storytelling device, not just a selling point

The Suicide Squad is extremely violent even by the standards of R-rated superhero cinema. The MPA rating cites strong violence and gore, pervasive language, sexual references, drug use, and brief graphic nudity.[CIT-007] The BBFC’s content summary includes stabbings, shootings, beheadings, impalements, and bodies being torn apart in visceral detail, including by King Shark.[CIT-008]

Calling the film “gory” therefore understates the experience for viewers who are sensitive to explicit violence. The action is designed to make bodies feel vulnerable. Characters can be shot, dismembered, crushed, eaten, or otherwise removed from the story with startling finality. That threat gives the ensemble structure its point: the squad is not merely pretending to be a group of doomed criminals. It is one.

RogerEbert.com described Gunn’s action-comedy as carefully calibrated, alternating humorous beats with intense violence.[CIT-002] The Guardian similarly presented the film as an eye-blitzing and visually aggressive superhero spectacle.[CIT-009] The distinction is useful: the violence is simultaneously a joke machine, a visual attraction, and a reminder of how the government treats Task Force X members—as replaceable assets.

This is also why the Deadpool comparison is both useful and limited. Like Deadpool, Gunn’s film uses profanity, self-awareness, and graphic superhero violence. But The Suicide Squad is less a single antihero showcase than a war movie with an expendable ensemble. It adds creature-feature imagery, a coercive government premise, military satire, and a more pronounced alternation between absurdity and sincerity. Metacritic’s editorial description similarly framed it as funny, bleakly self-aware, and shockingly violent while mixing familiar superhero conventions with gory satire.[CIT-013]

The emotional core beneath the mayhem

The strongest positive reviews did not mistake noise for substance. Beneath the jokes and kills, the film is interested in damaged people who have been labeled irredeemable by institutions that are themselves cynical and morally compromised.

Bloodsport’s relationship with his daughter gives him an immediate vulnerability, while his bond with Ratcatcher 2 becomes the film’s clearest expression of empathy. Their connection is important because it is not based on conventional heroism. Neither character is transformed into a spotless role model. Instead, they recognize pain in one another and find a reason to behave better than the system expects.

That warmth also sharpens the film’s treatment of Amanda Waller and the government operation. The prisoners are coerced into service, denied meaningful control over their circumstances, and sent into danger that more powerful people would prefer to conceal. The movie can laugh at its characters without reducing them to disposable objects. Its sentimentality is broad, but it gives the violence an emotional counterweight.[CIT-002][CIT-006]

What the film is saying about governments and war

The Corto Maltese mission provides a fictionalized military-adventure framework for satire about foreign intervention, secrecy, propaganda, militarism, and the institutions that decide whose lives are expendable. The prisoners are not recruited because the state values them. They are useful precisely because they can be disowned.

Time Out read the film as addressing U.S. foreign policy, military ethics, and toxic machismo beneath its explosions and monsters.[CIT-010] That political layer is materially present, but viewers should not expect a tightly argued political thriller. The satire is often buried beneath cartoon spectacle, rapid-fire jokes, and deliberately oversized action. Some critics found that mixture sharp; others considered the politics uneven or less developed than the film’s character work.[CIT-010][CIT-012]

The safest assessment is that the movie uses its superhero premise to make institutions look more frighteningly disposable than the monsters. Whether its critique is deep enough is open to interpretation, but it is not incidental to the story.

What the first reviews criticized

The consensus was positive, not unanimous. The most consistent reservations concern scale, pacing, and excess.

  • It can feel long and episodic. The large roster, early character turnover, and multiple mission phases create deliberate chaos. For some viewers, that structure produces suspense; for others, it feels like a series of set pieces searching for a tighter spine.
  • The volume rarely drops. The Guardian praised the film’s energy while also describing it as sprawling, loud, and visually aggressive.[CIT-009] Viewers who prefer restrained superhero drama may find the constant barrage exhausting.
  • The gore can become numbing. The Harvard Crimson found some violent moments clever or impressive but argued that many others were excessive.[CIT-011] “Deadpool looks kind of sweet” works as a compliment to the film’s boldness, but it is also a warning about its content.
  • The political satire is not always equally sharp. The movie raises serious questions about government manipulation and military ethics, but jokes and spectacle sometimes crowd out sustained examination.[CIT-010][CIT-012]

These are not minor caveats for the wrong audience. If you dislike graphic gore, vulgar humor, tonal whiplash, or stories that treat character death as a recurring punchline, the film’s celebrated qualities may be exactly what makes it unappealing.

Is The Suicide Squad worth watching?

Yes—if you want an R-rated superhero film that takes its ensemble, its violence, and its absurdity seriously. It is a strong recommendation for viewers who enjoy James Gunn’s irreverent group dynamics, creature-feature spectacle, dark comedy, and supporting characters who may genuinely die. It is also a worthwhile choice for anyone curious about how a partial sequel can retain recognizable elements while effectively resetting a franchise’s tone.

Approach it cautiously if you want a clean, conventional comic-book adventure. The movie contains graphic violence, frequent profanity, sexual references, drug use, and brief graphic nudity. Its characters are often introduced as jokes before revealing considerable damage underneath, and its political ideas are more suggestive than systematically developed.

If you enjoy… You will probably respond to…
R-rated superhero movies The profanity, extreme violence, and antihero premise
James Gunn ensembles The mix of eccentric personalities, jokes, and heartfelt relationships
War movies and creature features The mission structure, expendable squad, monsters, and battlefield scale
Conventional or family superhero adventures Probably not the gore, language, or bleakly comic treatment of death

Ways to revisit the film

If you want a permanent copy for repeat viewings, the The Suicide Squad 4K Blu-ray is the most natural premium physical-media option identified in the research. A 4K edition is best suited to viewers with compatible hardware who value higher-resolution home viewing. Prices, stock, and retailer listings can change, so verify the exact edition before purchasing.

For a less expensive or more widely compatible option, consider The Suicide Squad Blu-ray or The Suicide Squad DVD. These are movie editions, not adaptations or novelizations.

Read next: the comic connections

Gunn’s movie draws on the broader Suicide Squad tradition rather than functioning as a direct adaptation of one single storyline. For the classic comic material associated with the team, Suicide Squad: Trial by Fire is a spoiler-light follow-up recommendation. It is the John Ostrander collection identified by DC and its publisher as a classic story that inspired the feature film—not a film tie-in or novelization.[CIT-016]

Readers more interested in the movie’s unusual roster can look for The Suicide Squad Case Files 1. The collection brings together key appearances connected to characters including Bloodsport, King Shark, Polka-Dot Man, Weasel, the Thinker, and Amanda Waller. It is best treated as a character-history companion, not as a retelling of the 2021 movie.[CIT-017]

The soundtrack is another legitimate companion for fans of the film’s tonal mix, although the available research verifies a digital soundtrack release rather than a specific current CD or vinyl listing. Do not assume a physical music edition is available without checking the retailer and territory at the time of purchase.[CIT-018]

Final assessment

The Suicide Squad earned its early reputation by making its excess purposeful. The profanity and absurd comedy establish its identity; the gore makes the squad’s mortality matter; the ensemble performances supply surprising warmth; and the coerced-mission premise gives the spectacle a political edge. It is not a perfectly disciplined film, and its satire can be less penetrating than its best character moments. But as a piece of loud, vicious, emotionally committed superhero entertainment, it is far more than a correction of the 2016 movie.
