Oprah Winfrey Uses an Unnamed Weight-Loss Medication: ‘I’m Done With the Shaming’

Oprah Winfrey confirmed that she uses an unnamed prescription medication to help manage her weight, but she did not say it was Ozempic or any other specific drug. Here is what she disclosed, why she rejected weight stigma, and what her 2026 update means.

Oprah Winfrey confirmed in December 2023 that she uses a prescription medication to help manage her weight—but she did not name the drug. She described it as one part of a broader approach involving exercise, eating-related changes and ongoing weight management, while saying she was “done with the shaming” surrounding weight.

What Oprah Winfrey revealed

In a People interview published in December 2023, Oprah Winfrey confirmed that she uses a prescription medication to help manage her weight. She did not identify the medicine. That means there is no authoritative basis for saying that Winfrey uses Ozempic, Wegovy, Mounjaro, Zepbound, or any other specific drug. CBS News’ report on the interview likewise described the prescription as unnamed.

Winfrey described the medication as one tool in a broader approach. She also discussed exercise, changes related to eating and ongoing weight management, and said the treatment helped her avoid the weight cycling she called “yo-yoing.” She did not disclose the medication’s generic or brand name, dosage, schedule, prescribing clinician, or insurance arrangements.

What is confirmed—and what is not

  • Confirmed: Winfrey said she uses a prescription medication to help manage her weight.
  • Confirmed: She described it as part of a wider plan that included exercise and diet-related changes.
  • Not confirmed: The medication’s name, dose, prescribing details, cost, or insurance status.
  • Not established: That the medication is semaglutide, tirzepatide, liraglutide, or another particular treatment.

Why she said she was done with the shame

The disclosure was about more than a celebrity discussing a prescription. Winfrey connected it to decades of public scrutiny and to the private belief that her weight was primarily a test of willpower. Her message was that long-term weight struggles should not automatically be treated as evidence of laziness, weak character, or personal failure.

She said she was “done with the shaming”—including shame imposed by other people and shame she had directed at herself. In that context, medication represented relief and a different way of understanding weight management: as a health issue that may involve medical treatment, not simply a moral contest.

That distinction matters. Calling an anti-obesity medicine a shortcut ignores the medical decisions, side effects, behavior changes and continuing follow-up that treatment can involve. Calling it a cure is equally misleading. Winfrey’s own account described medication as a tool within continuing weight management, not as a replacement for every other part of her routine.

Did Oprah Winfrey say she uses Ozempic?

No. She confirmed a prescription weight-loss medication but intentionally did not name it. Ozempic, Wegovy, Mounjaro and Zepbound were frequently mentioned in the surrounding public conversation because they are prominent medications associated with diabetes treatment or chronic weight management. That context is not evidence of which medicine Winfrey received.

Any headline or social-media post that states “Oprah uses Ozempic” as a confirmed fact goes beyond her disclosure. The same caution applies to claims that she uses Wegovy, Mounjaro, Zepbound, or a particular dose.

What weight-loss medications are being discussed?

Prescription anti-obesity medication is a category, not a single drug. The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK) says these medicines are generally considered for adults with a body mass index of at least 30, or at least 27 when a person also has weight-related health problems. BMI is only one part of a clinical assessment; medication selection is a decision between a patient and a health professional.

The public conversation has focused heavily on medicines that act on GLP-1-related pathways, but not every prescription weight-management medicine is a GLP-1 treatment. NIDDK’s current patient guidance lists six FDA-approved medicines for long-term weight management:

  • Orlistat
  • Phentermine-topiramate
  • Naltrexone-bupropion
  • Liraglutide
  • Semaglutide
  • Tirzepatide

Setmelanotide is a separate treatment used for certain rare genetic causes of obesity. It should not be treated as interchangeable with the medicines commonly discussed in news coverage.

Why Ozempic and Wegovy are not the same claim

Semaglutide is sold under different brand names and approved indications. Wegovy is the semaglutide brand used for chronic weight management, while Ozempic is approved under a different name and dosage for type 2 diabetes. Similarly, Zepbound is tirzepatide for chronic weight management, while Mounjaro is tirzepatide for type 2 diabetes. Those distinctions do not identify Winfrey’s medication; they only explain why the brand names are often confused.

The FDA approved Zepbound for chronic weight management in adults with obesity, or overweight plus at least one weight-related condition, on November 8, 2023. The approval specified use alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity. That timing helps explain why tirzepatide became part of the wider cultural conversation around Winfrey’s disclosure, but it does not establish that she used Zepbound.

What happened when she later stopped treatment?

In a CBS interview listed in January 2026, Winfrey discussed her health, weight and her book Enough. Reporting on that conversation said she had stopped taking the medication for roughly a year to see whether she could maintain the result without it. She said she regained about 20 pounds and experienced the return of what she called “food noise.” The account remains her personal report: she still did not identify the medication.

Her experience is consistent with an important point in NIDDK’s guidance on prescription weight-management medicines: people will probably regain some weight after stopping treatment, although the amount varies from person to person. Some people may need to continue medication long term to maintain its benefits.

That does not turn Winfrey’s result into a universal rule. Whether someone should stop, continue, change or restart a medicine depends on the drug, the person’s health, treatment goals, side effects and clinician’s assessment. Regaining weight after discontinuation should not be framed as a personal failure or as proof that treatment did not work.

How Winfrey broadened the conversation

Winfrey continued the subject beyond her own disclosure. ABC’s official listing says that An Oprah Special: Shame, Blame and the Weight Loss Revolution aired on March 18, 2024. The primetime program examined prescription weight-loss medications, obesity stigma and the experiences of people using the treatments, bringing patients, clinicians and the larger cultural debate into the discussion.

Her message also continued in Oprah Winfrey’s book Enough, co-written with Yale endocrinologist Ania M. Jastreboff and published by Avid Reader Press/Simon & Schuster on January 13, 2026. The book is a continuation of the personal and medical conversation—not a substitute for medical advice or an indication of which prescription Winfrey used.

Why Winfrey left the WeightWatchers board

In March 2024, Winfrey announced that she would leave the board of WeightWatchers, now known as WW International, and donate her interest in the company to the Smithsonian’s National Museum of African American History and Culture. The Associated Press reported that WW viewed the move as a way to remove a perceived conflict of interest connected to her use of weight-loss medication.

That governance decision is relevant background, particularly because WW had expanded into prescription weight-management services through its acquisition of Sequence. But it is separate from the question of which medicine Winfrey used. Her departure from the board does not confirm a brand, dose or treatment plan.

What readers should know before considering treatment

Winfrey’s disclosure may prompt readers to ask whether prescription treatment is appropriate for them. The answer requires a clinician’s evaluation rather than a celebrity comparison. NIDDK says the decision should take into account expected benefits, possible side effects, existing medical conditions, other medicines, family history and cost.

  1. Discuss eligibility and goals. Adult eligibility commonly involves BMI thresholds—at least 30, or at least 27 with a weight-related condition—but a clinician must assess the full situation and determine whether treatment is appropriate.
  2. Expect an overall plan. Prescription medicines work best alongside a lifestyle program and are not intended to replace healthy eating, physical activity or ongoing follow-up.
  3. Compare the actual medicines. The drugs differ in how they work, how they are taken, expected results, side effects, interactions and approved uses. A brand name seen in the news is not automatically the right option for another person.
  4. Plan for maintenance. Benefits may require continued treatment, and some weight regain after stopping is common, though the amount varies. Stopping or changing a prescription should be discussed with the prescribing professional.
  5. Ask about cost and access. Price, insurance coverage and availability can affect the choice of treatment. Winfrey did not disclose her insurance status or personal cost.

Be cautious with online and unapproved products

The FDA has warned about unapproved or improperly compounded GLP-1 products used for weight loss, including risks involving dosing and the absence of appropriate clinical oversight. Readers should not treat social-media recommendations or celebrity reports as a purchasing guide. Anyone considering treatment should work with a licensed clinician and obtain medication through a legitimate, licensed pharmacy. The FDA’s safety information on unapproved GLP-1 drugs provides further guidance.

What this story does—and does not—establish

Established by Winfrey’s public statements Not established by the available reporting
She uses a prescription medication to help manage her weight. The medication’s generic or brand name.
She views medication as a tool against weight cycling. Whether she uses Ozempic, Wegovy, Mounjaro, Zepbound or another medicine.
She has also discussed exercise, eating-related changes and ongoing management. Her dose, schedule, prescribing clinician, insurance or treatment cost.
She later reported stopping for about a year, regaining about 20 pounds and experiencing returning “food noise.” That her experience predicts what will happen to every patient.

Winfrey’s disclosure changed the tone of the public conversation by challenging the idea that weight is explained only by willpower. The responsible takeaway is not to guess her prescription. It is to understand that evidence-based weight management can include medical treatment, that treatment decisions are individual, and that shame is not a substitute for care.

What did Oprah say happened after she stopped the medication?

Reporting on a CBS interview listed in January 2026 said Winfrey had stopped the medication for roughly a year, regained about 20 pounds and experienced the return of “food noise.” This was her personal account, and she still did not name the medicine.

Who may be eligible for prescription weight-loss medication?

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: Oprah Winfrey confirmed in December 2023 that she uses an unnamed prescription weight-loss medication, but she never said it was Ozempic, Wegovy, Mounjaro or Zepbound. Her later account of regaining about 20 pounds after stopping underscores that weight management may require ongoing care; it does not create a universal rule or replace a clinician’s advice.
