Bari Weiss is a journalist, author, political commentator, and media entrepreneur who became editor-in-chief of CBS News after Paramount announced the acquisition of her publication, The Free Press, on October 6, 2025. Her appointment connected a prominent digital-media founder and opinion journalist with one of America’s best-known broadcast-news organizations—and triggered a debate about newsroom culture, political influence, and the future of legacy television news.

Bari Weiss is a journalist, author, political commentator, and media entrepreneur who became editor-in-chief of CBS News after Paramount announced the acquisition of her publication, The Free Press, on October 6, 2025. The appointment put a prominent digital-media founder and opinion journalist in charge of one of the United States’ best-known broadcast-news organizations. It also made Weiss the subject of an unusually intense debate about ideology, newsroom independence, and the future of legacy television news.

Her background is not that of a conventional broadcast executive. Weiss worked in opinion journalism, wrote and edited for major publications, founded a subscription-media company, and built a public profile by challenging what she regarded as ideological conformity in established newsrooms. Since taking the CBS role, her tenure has included a large expansion of contributors, the planned shutdown of CBS News Radio, and major changes at 60 Minutes.

Who is Bari Weiss?

Bari Weiss is the founder and editor of The Free Press, host of the podcast Honestly, author of How to Fight Anti-Semitism, and editor-in-chief of CBS News. Her professional identity combines several roles that are usually separated in traditional media: reporter and editor, opinion writer, publisher, podcast host, and media entrepreneur.

That combination helps explain both her influence and the controversy surrounding her CBS appointment. Supporters describe Weiss as an advocate for independent, heterodox, or intellectually open journalism. Critics argue that she brings a pronounced political and cultural agenda into a legacy news organization. Those are competing interpretations, not interchangeable facts. The factual point is that Weiss has built her career around both journalism and arguments about how journalism should operate.

Where did Bari Weiss begin her career?

Weiss is from Pittsburgh. According to the Associated Press, she attended an elite private school, served as student council president, spent a gap year in Israel, and later attended Columbia University.

Her early professional experience included work connected with Haaretz and The Forward. She subsequently worked at The Wall Street Journal as an opinion and book-review editor. These roles placed her primarily in the world of ideas, commentary, and cultural and political writing rather than in the conventional path of local reporting followed by television newsroom management.

Her years at The New York Times

Weiss later joined The New York Times, where she worked as an opinion editor and writer. She left the newspaper in 2020 and published a resignation letter criticizing what she described as an intolerant internal culture toward dissenting views.

The resignation made Weiss a prominent critic of mainstream-media institutions. The Associated Press has described her public profile as being built partly on criticism of major news organizations and their ideological culture. Her arguments placed her at the center of wider disputes about “wokeness,” free speech, workplace conformity, Israel, antisemitism, and the boundaries between reporting and opinion.

It is important to distinguish her role at the Times from her later CBS position. At the Times, she was an opinion editor and writer. At CBS, she became the organization’s top editorial leader. Her earlier experience is relevant to understanding her worldview, but it does not mean that she previously ran a broadcast-news division.

What is The Free Press?

The Free Press is the independent digital publication Weiss founded after leaving The New York Times. The publication began in 2021 and developed as a subscription-media business combining reporting, commentary, podcasts, video, and live events.

Its own description emphasizes honesty, doggedness, and independence. In practice, the publication became the central platform for Weiss’s editorial identity: a place where writers and contributors addressed subjects including politics, culture, free speech, Israel, antisemitism, and institutional power from perspectives that its audience viewed as insufficiently represented by larger news organizations.

Paramount said in its October 2025 announcement that The Free Press had reached 1.5 million total subscribers, including more than 170,000 paid subscribers. Those figures were supplied by the company and should not be treated as independently audited audience measurements.

Under the acquisition announced by Paramount, The Free Press was to retain its own brand and operations while continuing its reporting, video, audio-podcast, and events businesses. Weiss’s CBS appointment therefore did not mean that The Free Press simply disappeared into CBS News. It created a relationship between a newer subscription publication and a long-established broadcast organization.

What book did Bari Weiss write?

Weiss’s first book is How to Fight Anti-Semitism, published by Crown in 2019. Penguin Random House lists a 2019 hardcover edition and a 2021 paperback edition, each at 224 pages. The book discusses contemporary antisemitism and argues for renewing Jewish and American values. The Jewish Book Council records it as the winner of the 2019 National Jewish Book Award.

For readers trying to understand Weiss’s public work, Bari Weiss’s book, How to Fight Anti-Semitism, is the clearest single-volume introduction to one of the subjects most closely associated with her writing. Reading it is not necessary to understand her CBS appointment, and describing its argument is not the same as endorsing it, but the book helps explain her focus on antisemitism, Jewish identity, Israel, and the cultural forces she believes enable prejudice.

When did Bari Weiss become editor-in-chief of CBS News?

Paramount announced Weiss’s appointment on October 6, 2025, as part of its acquisition of The Free Press. Paramount executive David Ellison said Weiss would report directly to him, lead editorial priorities, and collaborate with CBS News.

The appointment was significant because Weiss came from opinion writing, digital publishing, and media entrepreneurship rather than from the standard broadcast-news management pipeline. The Associated Press characterized her as a polarizing figure and noted that she had no prior broadcast-news experience before taking the CBS role.

That does not make her inexperienced in every aspect of journalism. She had worked as an editor and writer at major publications and had built and managed a substantial digital-media operation. But “editor-in-chief” should not be read as proof that she had previously run a television newsroom. It is a new type of leadership assignment for her, and part of the experiment is whether her approach can work inside a large broadcast institution.

What has Weiss changed at CBS News?

Several early decisions have made Weiss’s tenure highly visible. Some were announced jointly with CBS News president Tom Cibrowski or by CBS as an organization, so it would be inaccurate to attribute every change to Weiss alone.

Expansion of CBS News contributors

On January 27, 2026, CBS News announced 19 new contributors covering areas including politics, national security, health, happiness, arts, food, and style. CBS said the contributors would appear across its broadcasts and digital platforms.

The move suggests an effort to broaden CBS’s roster of experts and recognizable personalities beyond traditional correspondents. It also fits a media environment in which networks increasingly use contributors across television, websites, podcasts, and social platforms. Whether the strategy strengthens reporting or makes the network more personality-driven is one of the questions raised by the change.

Planned shutdown of CBS News Radio

In March 2026, Weiss and Cibrowski announced that CBS News Radio would shut down after nearly a century. Programming was scheduled to end on May 22, 2026, across approximately 700 affiliated stations.

CBS cited difficult economic conditions and a changing radio-programming strategy. The decision was jointly attributed to Cibrowski and Weiss, rather than to Weiss alone. It is nevertheless an important marker of the organization’s direction under the new leadership: a historic broadcast service was being closed while CBS concentrated on other forms of distribution and audience growth.

A new executive producer at 60 Minutes

On May 28, 2026, CBS announced that technology journalist and filmmaker Nick Bilton would replace Tanya Simon as executive producer of 60 Minutes. CBS described the change as a turning point. Weiss said Bilton was an entrepreneurial journalist suited to what she called an entrepreneurial news brand.

The decision was consequential because 60 Minutes is one of the most established programs in American television journalism. Changing its executive producer was therefore more than a routine personnel announcement: it signaled an attempt to reshape the program’s identity and methods.

The dispute involving Scott Pelley

The changes at 60 Minutes soon produced an internal and public controversy. CBS reported that longtime correspondent Scott Pelley was fired on June 3, 2026, after a tense exchange involving Bilton and the program’s new direction.

According to CBS’s account, Pelley accused Weiss of “murdering the show” and questioned Bilton’s qualifications. Bilton’s termination letter described Pelley’s conduct as hostile and incompatible with collaboration. These are the parties’ competing descriptions of the dispute. They should not be presented as an independently adjudicated finding that one side was definitively right.

The next 60 Minutes lineup

By early August 2026, the Associated Press reported that 60 Minutes had announced a new slate of correspondents and contributors for its 59th season. The lineup included Ross Douthat and former CBS Evening News anchor Norah O’Donnell.

The AP connected the lineup to the shakeup led by Weiss and noted that the transition had drawn substantial scrutiny over the program’s editorial direction and corporate ownership. The new roster offered a visible indication that the changes at 60 Minutes were intended to affect more than one senior production role.

Why is Bari Weiss’s CBS appointment controversial?

  1. Her route into broadcast leadership is unusual. Weiss is an experienced writer, editor, founder, and commentator, but she did not arrive at CBS after a conventional career managing a television-news division. Supporters see her outside perspective as an advantage; critics question whether opinion-media experience translates smoothly to leading a large broadcast newsroom.
  2. She has a clearly identifiable editorial worldview. Weiss has publicly criticized ideological conformity in established media and written about free speech, antisemitism, Israel, Jewish identity, and institutional power. Supporters regard that outlook as a defense of open debate. Critics see it as an ideological agenda that could influence a news organization’s priorities.
  3. The appointment occurred during a corporate change. Weiss became editor-in-chief as Paramount acquired The Free Press. That timing led critics to ask whether CBS News was moving toward a more conservative or Trump-friendly posture. Such claims are interpretations of the acquisition and appointment, not settled facts established by the appointment itself.
  4. Her early personnel decisions were unusually prominent. The contributor expansion, radio shutdown, change in the 60 Minutes executive producer, Pelley’s firing, and the later correspondent lineup all made her leadership visible quickly. The stated rationales vary by source, and the decisions were not all made by Weiss acting alone.

Is Bari Weiss conservative?

There is no single neutral label that fully describes Weiss’s public role. She is often associated with debates over anti-“woke” politics, free speech, Israel, antisemitism, and institutional media. Her supporters describe her as independent-minded or heterodox. Critics characterize her as bringing a right-leaning or strongly ideological agenda into mainstream media.

The most defensible description is more specific: Weiss is a prominent journalist and media entrepreneur whose career combines opinion writing, Jewish and Israel-related commentary, criticism of established media institutions, and digital-media publishing. Whether her CBS leadership represents a conservative shift, a broader challenge to traditional newsroom culture, or a commercially motivated reorganization remains contested.

That distinction matters. Weiss’s appointment is a fact. The political consequences of the appointment are predictions and interpretations. A fair account should identify who is making those interpretations instead of presenting them as established outcomes.

What does Weiss’s appointment mean for CBS News?

Weiss’s arrival represents a notable bridge between three forms of media: opinion journalism, subscription-based digital publishing, and legacy broadcast news. She built an audience by arguing that established institutions had become too narrow or too intolerant of dissent. She now has to apply that philosophy within an organization whose credibility depends on consistent reporting standards, editorial processes, experienced correspondents, and public trust.

The early changes point in several directions at once. The contributor expansion emphasizes expertise and recognizable voices. The radio shutdown reflects economic and distribution pressures. The 60 Minutes changes indicate a willingness to alter a historically influential program. None of those decisions alone proves a complete ideological transformation of CBS News, but together they explain why Weiss’s tenure has attracted so much attention.

The central question is not simply whether Weiss is controversial. It is whether a media entrepreneur known for challenging mainstream institutions can lead a legacy newsroom without allowing either institutional complacency or personal ideology to replace rigorous editorial judgment. The answer will depend on the journalism CBS produces, not only on the arguments made about Weiss’s appointment.
