GRAMMYs 2024: The Best and Worst Moments

The 2024 GRAMMYs were at their best as a live music event, from Tracy Chapman and Luke Combs’ “Fast Car” duet to Joni Mitchell’s historic debut. Taylor Swift’s fourth Album of the Year win made history, while Jay-Z’s criticism and Killer Mike’s detention supplied the night’s most uncomfortable moments.

The 66th GRAMMY Awards were at their best when they behaved like a concert with history in the room—and at their most uncomfortable when institutional criticism and security drama interrupted the music. Tracy Chapman and Luke Combs’ “Fast Car” duet supplied the night’s emotional center, Joni Mitchell made a remarkable GRAMMY-stage debut, and Miley Cyrus delivered a career-defining celebration.

The defining competitive result was Taylor Swift’s fourth Album of the Year win for Midnights. The sharpest disruptions came from Jay-Z’s criticism of the Recording Academy and Killer Mike’s detention shortly after winning three awards.

Hosted by Trevor Noah at Los Angeles’ Crypto.com Arena on February 4, 2024, the ceremony mixed contemporary pop, country, R&B, hip-hop, rock, singer-songwriter tradition, and legacy performances. Its strongest passages trusted the artists and their songs. Its weakest passages exposed the unresolved tensions surrounding the institution itself.

The night’s emotional core: Tracy Chapman and Luke Combs sing “Fast Car”

Chapman and Combs’ performance of “Fast Car” was the clearest high point of the broadcast. Chapman’s rare public appearance immediately gave the duet weight, but the moment worked for more than nostalgic reasons. It brought together the original songwriter and performer with the country artist whose cover had introduced the song to a new mainstream audience.

Combs’ version gave “Fast Car” a second cultural life in country music. Chapman’s presence, however, re-centered the song’s authorship and the distinctive emotional world of the original. The performance was a meeting of generations, genres, and interpretations rather than a simple reunion or a celebrity cameo. Its impact came from the song itself, the unusual collaboration, and the visible emotion it generated in the room.

The arrangement also made an important choice: it did not bury the song beneath spectacle. Contemporary coverage, including the Associated Press’ description of the performance as spine-tingling, captured why the duet became the evening’s defining live moment. It demonstrated that an awards-show performance can feel major without becoming oversized.

Joni Mitchell’s GRAMMY-stage debut was a moment of witness

Joni Mitchell performed “Both Sides Now” at the GRAMMYs for the first time at age 80. That fact alone would have made the appearance historic: Mitchell had already won 10 GRAMMYs, yet had never previously performed on the ceremony’s stage.

Seated in an ornate chair and surrounded by musicians including Brandi Carlile, Allison Russell, Blake Mills, and Jacob Collier, Mitchell performed a song whose shifting perspective carried unusual resonance in the setting. The performance was not an attempt to reproduce a younger version of Mitchell or to turn age into a technical competition. Its force came from hearing a canonical song refracted through experience, survival, and time.

The Recording Academy characterized the performance as stirring and emotional, and that historical framing is more useful than an overly precise judgment about vocal technique. Mitchell’s appearance represented return and recognition: a foundational artist receiving the kind of stage acknowledgment that her influence had long warranted.

Billie Eilish and FINNEAS made restraint feel spectacular

Billie Eilish and FINNEAS performed “What Was I Made For?” from Barbie, a song that later won Song of the Year. In a broadcast filled with large personalities and high-stakes career moments, their presentation stood out by remaining inward-looking.

The Recording Academy described the performance as ethereal. More importantly, it preserved the song’s existential, intimate tone instead of treating it merely as a promotional number for a blockbuster film. “What Was I Made For?” came from one of the year’s biggest commercial cultural phenomena, but the GRAMMY performance allowed it to function as a quiet meditation rather than a soundtrack advertisement.

That contrast mattered. The performance showed that a song created for a major studio film could still occupy the emotional center of an awards broadcast without relying on elaborate spectacle.

Miley Cyrus finally received the career-scale recognition behind “Flowers”

Miley Cyrus won her first GRAMMYs during the ceremony, including Best Pop Solo Performance and Record of the Year for “Flowers.” Her live performance turned that achievement into part of the number itself. She acknowledged the win while singing, making the celebration feel spontaneous and slightly unruly rather than perfectly sealed inside a rehearsed awards-show format.

That spontaneity was the point. Cyrus was not an unknown performer suddenly arriving at the GRAMMYs; she was a familiar pop figure with a long career behind her. The emotional payoff came from seeing a major, established artist receive industry recognition for a career-scale hit. “Flowers” gave her the platform, but the performance also carried the accumulated history of the artist delivering it.

Her two wins and exuberant stage presence made Cyrus one of the night’s most satisfying breakthrough stories. “Breakthrough” here should not be confused with overnight discovery. It was a breakthrough in awards recognition.

The ceremony’s range kept it from becoming only a Taylor Swift show

The broadcast benefited from a broad performance lineup. Dua Lipa, Billie Eilish, Olivia Rodrigo, Chapman and Combs, Mitchell, Cyrus, SZA, U2, Billy Joel, Annie Lennox, and Fantasia Barrino represented sharply different musical identities and generations. The result was a ceremony that moved among contemporary pop, R&B, hip-hop, rock, country, and the singer-songwriter tradition.

SZA brought a different energy to the program, while Olivia Rodrigo represented the intensity of a younger pop generation. U2 performed from the Sphere in Las Vegas, extending the event beyond the Los Angeles arena. Billy Joel and Annie Lennox reinforced the ceremony’s connection to music history, while artists such as Karol G, Victoria Monét, boygenius, and Tyla made the winners’ story feel broader than the headline category.

That breadth is easy to lose in retrospective coverage because Swift’s record supplied such a clean headline. But the night also marked important first GRAMMY recognition. Karol G, Victoria Monét, Miley Cyrus, and boygenius were among the notable first-time winners. Tyla won Best African Music Performance, a newly introduced category. These results gave the ceremony a sense of handoff between established artists and performers entering or consolidating their awards-era status.

Taylor Swift’s fourth Album of the Year win made history

Taylor Swift won Album of the Year for Midnights, becoming the first artist to win the award four times. That was the evening’s central competitive headline and its most consequential piece of GRAMMY history.

The result placed Swift at the center of the ceremony even before she used her acceptance speech to announce a forthcoming album. The announcement intensified the feeling that the broadcast was part of a larger Swift career narrative: a record-setting win followed by a major piece of new-release news.

It is fair to say that Swift’s victory was historically significant. It is not equally factual to declare that another nominee was “robbed.” That language expresses a critic’s or fan’s judgment, not an established result. The field included major contenders such as SZA, and the outcome inevitably renewed debates about how the Recording Academy weighs commercial reach, cultural influence, artistic ambition, and industry consensus. Those debates are part of the GRAMMYs’ recurring story, but they should be distinguished from the verified fact that Midnights won.

For listeners who want to revisit the album at the center of the night’s record, Taylor Swift’s Midnights on vinyl is a natural companion to this part of the ceremony. It is a recording connected directly to the Album of the Year result, not official GRAMMY merchandise; edition, price, availability, and retailer should be checked before purchase.

Jay-Z’s speech exposed the GRAMMYs’ credibility problem

The most consequentially uncomfortable moment came during Jay-Z’s acceptance of the Dr. Dre Global Impact Award. Rather than treating the occasion as a straightforward celebration, he criticized the Recording Academy’s historical decision-making and pointed specifically to Beyoncé’s lack of an Album of the Year win.

The speech was not a failure of rhetoric. Its awkwardness came from the collision between the award’s celebratory purpose and Jay-Z’s public challenge to the institution presenting it. The GRAMMYs depend on the authority and participation of artists at Jay-Z and Beyoncé’s level, yet those same artists have reason to question the organization’s record.

That distinction matters when interpreting the moment. The documented target of Jay-Z’s criticism was the Academy’s choices and Beyoncé’s Album of the Year history. It should not be recast as a direct attack on Taylor Swift without evidence establishing that interpretation. The speech was best understood as an institutional critique delivered from inside the ceremony.

Killer Mike’s detention created the night’s most jarring transition

Killer Mike won three awards during the Premiere Ceremony: Best Rap Performance and Best Rap Song for “SCIENTISTS & ENGINEERS,” and Best Rap Album for MICHAEL. Shortly afterward, he was escorted from the arena in handcuffs and detained by Los Angeles police following an altercation inside the venue.

The timing made the incident especially disruptive. The broadcast had just established a clean-sweep success story; suddenly, the image of the winner being led away displaced the awards narrative. It was one of the sharpest possible transitions between celebration and security drama.

The available reporting described competing perspectives rather than a settled account of wrongdoing. The Associated Press later reported Mike’s claim that an overzealous security guard contributed to the physical altercation. Because the incident involved an arrest arising from a specific venue confrontation, it is more responsible to describe the chronology and the competing account than to present guilt as established fact.

The episode’s significance lies partly in its optics. Awards shows attempt to create a controlled sequence of victories, speeches, and performances. A detention inside the venue made the security apparatus visible and abruptly reminded viewers that the event was also a heavily managed public space.

So, what were the best and worst moments?

Calling a GRAMMY moment “best” or “worst” is necessarily a critical judgment. The official GRAMMY record can establish who won, who performed, and what happened onstage; outside reporting and criticism help explain why particular moments resonated.

  • Best emotional moment: Tracy Chapman and Luke Combs performing “Fast Car.”
  • Best historical moment: Joni Mitchell’s first GRAMMY-stage performance at age 80.
  • Best restrained performance: Billie Eilish and FINNEAS with “What Was I Made For?”
  • Best celebratory performance: Miley Cyrus turning her first GRAMMY wins into part of “Flowers.”
  • Biggest competitive headline: Taylor Swift becoming the first four-time Album of the Year winner.
  • Most consequential speech: Jay-Z challenging the Academy over Beyoncé’s Album of the Year record.
  • Most jarring offstage development: Killer Mike’s detention after his three-award sweep.

Ultimately, the 2024 GRAMMYs succeeded most clearly as a live music event. Chapman and Combs demonstrated how a song can cross generations and genres; Mitchell brought the meaning of a long career into the present; Eilish and FINNEAS showed the power of restraint; and Cyrus made recognition feel immediate and personal. Swift’s fourth Album of the Year win supplied the historical headline, while the Jay-Z speech and Killer Mike detention revealed the institutional and logistical tensions beneath the ceremony’s polished surface.

Why was Killer Mike detained at the 2024 GRAMMYs?

Killer Mike won three awards at the Premiere Ceremony—Best Rap Performance, Best Rap Song, and Best Rap Album—then was escorted from the arena in handcuffs and detained after an altercation inside the venue. Reporting included competing accounts, so the underlying incident should not be described as settled guilt.

What did Jay-Z criticize during his 2024 GRAMMYs speech?

Jay-Z used his Dr. Dre Global Impact Award acceptance speech to criticize the Recording Academy’s historical choices, specifically pointing to Beyoncé’s lack of an Album of the Year win. The documented criticism was directed at the Academy, not established as a direct attack on Taylor Swift.

The Bottom Line

The 2024 GRAMMYs were strongest when the music led: “Fast Car,” Joni Mitchell’s debut, Billie Eilish’s restraint, and Miley Cyrus’s breakthrough celebration gave the night its lasting emotional power. They were weakest when the institution itself became the story, whether through Jay-Z’s criticism of the Academy or the abrupt disruption caused by Killer Mike’s detention.
