Jesse Garon Presley was Elvis Presley’s identical twin brother. Jesse was delivered stillborn in Tupelo, Mississippi, on January 8, 1935, shortly before Elvis was born alive. He therefore never had a childhood, adult life, or public career. Elvis was raised as the Presley family’s only living child.
The birth of Elvis and Jesse Presley
The twins were born in the Presley family’s small two-room house in East Tupelo, Mississippi. That house is now preserved as the Elvis Presley Birthplace.
Jesse was the first twin delivered and was stillborn. Elvis was born afterward and survived. Some secondary accounts describe the interval between the two births as approximately 35 minutes; that figure is best treated as a reported estimate rather than as a detail independently verified here from a primary birth record. Graceland’s official account confirms the essential sequence: the first twin, identified there as Jessie Garon, was stillborn, and Elvis was born alive and healthy.

Because Jesse did not survive birth, the brothers never grew up together. Elvis was not the surviving half of a pair who later separated; he was raised from infancy as an only child.
Why Elvis was considered an only child
Jesse’s death meant that Vernon and Gladys Presley had one living child: Elvis. Graceland’s biography and early-childhood history both describe Elvis as having been raised as an only child.
The loss was part of the Presley family’s earliest history, but it is important not to turn that fact into an unsupported explanation for everything Elvis later became. Historical discussions sometimes explore the idea of a “twin-less twin”—the experience of someone whose twin dies before or around birth. That concept can provide context for thinking about family grief, but the available evidence does not prove that Jesse’s death caused particular elements of Elvis’s personality, musical ability, substance use, health problems, or career.

Where was Jesse Garon Presley buried?
Graceland states that Jesse was buried near the shotgun house where the twins were born. Later reporting has supplied a more specific location: a January 2026 report by Commercial Appeal journalist Bob Mehr, reproduced by Yahoo Entertainment, identified Priceville Memorial Gardens in Tupelo and reported that the family’s poverty meant Jesse was buried in a shoebox.
The location is therefore best presented in two parts. The broad burial account comes from Graceland; the Priceville Memorial Gardens location and shoebox detail come from later newspaper reporting and should be attributed to that report rather than stated as independently confirmed official-record details.
Jesse is also commemorated at Graceland. The Meditation Garden contains the gravesites of Elvis and members of his family, and the 2026 report specifically identifies a memorial gravestone for Jesse Garon there. A memorial marker is not evidence that Jesse lived into adulthood; it preserves the memory of the twin who died at birth.

Was his name Jesse or Jessie?
Both spellings appear in reputable institutional and historical sources:
- Jesse Garon Presley appears in material from the Mississippi Department of Archives and History, as well as in several major reference and newspaper accounts.
- Jessie Garon appears on official Graceland pages and the Elvis Presley Birthplace website.
This is a source-spelling difference, not evidence that Elvis had two different twin brothers. This article uses Jesse Garon Presley, the spelling used in the question and by the Mississippi Department of Archives and History.
Did Jesse’s death shape Elvis’s life?
It is reasonable to say that the death of a child could have affected the Presley family, particularly because it occurred during a difficult birth and in conditions of poverty. It is not reasonable to claim, without stronger evidence, that Jesse’s death definitively explains Elvis’s talent, behavior, beliefs, or later struggles.

Popular stories sometimes say that Elvis spoke with Jesse’s ghost, believed Jesse directly gave him musical talent, or felt a supernatural connection throughout his life. Those claims belong to the category of anecdotes, interpretations, or Presley folklore unless supported by a specific, reliable source. They should not be presented as established biographical facts.
What happened to Elvis’s twin brother?
In short, Jesse Garon Presley was Elvis’s identical twin, born first in Tupelo on January 8, 1935. He was stillborn and was buried in or near Tupelo, with later reporting identifying Priceville Memorial Gardens as the burial site. Elvis was born alive shortly afterward and grew up as an only child. Jesse’s name and memory are preserved in family history, historical accounts, and a memorial associated with Graceland’s Meditation Garden.
Learn more about Elvis’s early life
Readers who want broader context on Elvis’s childhood, family, and rise from Tupelo can explore an Elvis Presley biography. A biography can provide background beyond the narrow question of Jesse’s death, but it should not be treated as proof of the more speculative claims sometimes attached to the story.
Where the story is remembered
The Presley family house in Tupelo, now part of the Elvis Presley Birthplace, is the central physical setting for the twins’ birth. Graceland’s Meditation Garden provides the better-known memorial setting associated with Jesse and the Presley family. Visitor details can change, so consult the official Graceland and Elvis Presley Birthplace websites before planning a visit.
