Spoilers for Wicked: For Good: Elphaba survives, Fiyero becomes the Scarecrow, and the two leave Oz together. Glinda remains behind to confront the Wizard’s regime and lead Oz, while the final movement of the Grimmerie hints—without confirming—that Elphaba may still be able to reach her.
Spoilers for the entire film: Elphaba does not die at the end of Wicked: For Good, and Fiyero survives as the Scarecrow. The apparent melting of the Wicked Witch is a carefully staged escape that allows Elphaba and Fiyero to leave Oz together. Glinda, however, remains behind, believing that both of them are dead—or, at most, receiving an ambiguous magical hint that Elphaba survived.
How Elphaba survives the water
After Fiyero is captured by the Wizard’s forces, Elphaba returns to Kiamo Ko and casts a spell meant to make him impervious to pain. The magic does not protect him in an ordinary way. Instead, Fiyero is transformed into the Scarecrow, the same figure Dorothy later meets on her journey through Oz.
The transformation is not Fiyero’s death. It is the unexpected result of Elphaba’s attempt to save him. As the Scarecrow, he can survive the treatment that would otherwise have killed or permanently injured him, and he retains his connection with Elphaba.

Glinda reaches Elphaba’s hideout before the mob arrives. Their meeting leads to “For Good,” the film’s emotional centerpiece. The song is not a simple reconciliation in which the two women return to their old friendship. They acknowledge that their relationship has changed them permanently, even though their opposing positions in Oz make a normal life together impossible.
Elphaba asks Glinda to hide while she gives herself up. Her intention is to keep Glinda from being condemned as her accomplice. Dorothy then throws water on Elphaba, apparently causing the Wicked Witch to melt. Elphaba’s hat and the bottle of green elixir remain behind, giving Oz the physical evidence it needs to accept the official story.
But the audience soon learns that the scene was a deception. Elphaba escapes through a trapdoor beneath the floor and is still alive. Fiyero, now the Scarecrow, finds her, and the two leave Oz together.
Elphaba’s survival must remain secret. If she publicly reclaimed her identity, the Wizard’s government and Morrible’s propaganda machine could restart the hunt. Her escape saves her life, but it also means surrendering any hope of openly clearing her name.
What happens to Glinda after Elphaba’s apparent death?
Glinda initially believes that Elphaba and Fiyero are gone. She returns to the Emerald City carrying the green elixir and confronts the Wizard. The bottle exposes his personal connection to Elphaba: he is her biological father.
Glinda also turns against Madame Morrible. She recognizes Morrible’s role in creating the campaign against Elphaba and in the events surrounding Nessarose’s death. Glinda has Morrible arrested and imprisoned, while the Wizard is forced to leave Oz.

These actions make Glinda the effective political leader of Oz. The ending does not present that position as a prize awarded to the film’s “good” witch. It is a responsibility created by the damage Glinda helped enable.
For much of the story, Glinda benefits from the regime’s version of goodness. She accepts the public identity of Glinda the Good and participates, directly or indirectly, in a narrative that turns Elphaba into a monster. Her new leadership gives her the opportunity to use that same public influence differently: to challenge the Wizard’s false story, protect Elphaba’s legacy, and help reverse the persecution of Animals.

Glinda’s goodness at the end is therefore complicated. She has not erased her earlier complicity. She must lead while carrying the guilt and grief produced by her choices.
Does Glinda know that Elphaba is alive?
Not definitively. After Elphaba and Fiyero escape, the Grimmerie—the ancient book of magic that previously responded primarily to Elphaba—is associated with Glinda. Its pages flutter after Elphaba sends magic from beyond Oz.
The film does not have Glinda explicitly announce that she understands the signal. That leaves two possible readings:
- A literal reading: Elphaba is sending Glinda a private sign that she survived.
- A symbolic or magical reading: The Grimmerie responds to Glinda because she has begun to reject the Wizard’s manufactured version of goodness and accept genuine responsibility.
The first interpretation gives Glinda a small measure of hope, but it does not create a reunion. Elphaba and Glinda remain physically separated, and Glinda cannot publicly acknowledge Elphaba without putting her in danger. The final Grimmerie moment changes the separation from complete uncertainty to ambiguous separation—it may preserve a private connection without undoing the sacrifice.

Why Dorothy matters to the ending
Dorothy’s role connects Wicked: For Good to the familiar story of The Wizard of Oz. The tornado kills Nessarose, Dorothy receives the enchanted shoes from Glinda, and Dorothy later becomes the unwitting person who appears to kill Elphaba with water.
Dorothy is not portrayed as the central villain. She acts without knowing the political history behind the conflict. The Wizard’s regime has already arranged the circumstances that make Elphaba appear dangerous, so Dorothy becomes an instrument of a story she does not understand.
That is the point of the connection to The Wizard of Oz: the traditional account can be accurate in its broad outline while still being morally misleading. The Wicked Witch appears to melt, but the audience knows that the public version conceals both her survival and the political machinery that branded her wicked.
What the ending says about “good” and “wicked”
The film is not ultimately asking whether Elphaba or Glinda is the “real” good witch. It asks who has the power to define goodness, who benefits from that definition, and whether compromised power can be used to repair the harm it helped create.

By the end, Glinda’s public title begins to align more closely with her conduct. She confronts the Wizard, arrests Morrible, and inherits the responsibility of changing Oz. But the audience knows that her goodness is inseparable from guilt, grief, and the privilege she once enjoyed.

Elphaba, meanwhile, remains officially wicked even though the audience knows the accusation is false. Her survival protects the possibility of a truth that exists outside the state’s official story. She cannot publicly correct the record, but her escape prevents the regime from possessing the whole truth.
What “For Good” means for Elphaba and Glinda
Elphaba and Glinda’s friendship is the emotional center of the ending. Elphaba changes Glinda by forcing her to distinguish popularity from moral courage. Glinda changes Elphaba by giving her intimacy, recognition, and a relationship in which she is not reduced to her green skin, extraordinary magic, or political usefulness.

The title phrase works in both senses. Their friendship changes each woman permanently, and those changes shape the choices they make after parting. Elphaba disappears so she can survive and continue resisting the forces that persecuted her. Glinda stays in Oz so she can use the legitimacy she gained inside that system to dismantle its worst abuses.
Neither woman can simply return to student life at Shiz. Their positions now carry different responsibilities. Elphaba must work from outside the system; Glinda must attempt reform from within it. Their separation is painful, but it is not evidence that their friendship failed. It is the cost of protecting one another and acting on what they have learned.

The film preserves the Broadway musical’s major revelations: Elphaba survives, Fiyero becomes the Scarecrow, Elphaba and Fiyero leave Oz together, and Glinda remains behind believing that the people closest to her are dead.
The significant film addition is the final Grimmerie beat. In the stage version, Glinda is left with total uncertainty and grief. In the film, she may receive a private indication that Elphaba is alive. That possibility softens the ending without removing its tragedy, because the two women still cannot openly reunite.
Best Value
The film’s version is therefore less a conventional happy ending than an expanded emotional possibility: their public lives have separated them, but their friendship may not be entirely lost in private.
Where to rewatch the ending
If you want to revisit the clues—the trapdoor, Fiyero’s transformation, the green elixir, and the final Grimmerie pages—look for the film’s official home-media editions, including the Wicked: For Good Blu-ray and 4K UHD release. Availability and formats can vary by country and retailer.
The ending in one sentence
Elphaba survives and escapes with Fiyero, Glinda remains in Oz to undo the system that helped destroy Elphaba’s reputation, and the final movement of the Grimmerie suggests—but never confirms—that the two friends may still be able to reach one another.

Why does Fiyero become the Scarecrow?
Fiyero becomes the Scarecrow after Elphaba casts a spell intended to make him impervious to pain. The transformation protects him rather than killing him.
Does Glinda know Elphaba is alive?
The film does not explicitly confirm that Glinda understands Elphaba’s survival. The moving Grimmerie pages can be read as a private message from Elphaba or as a symbolic sign of Glinda’s moral transformation.
How is the film ending different from the Broadway ending?
The film follows the Broadway musical’s main ending but adds the final Grimmerie moment, giving Glinda a possible hint that Elphaba survived. The stage ending leaves her with more complete uncertainty.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Elphaba’s death is a staged disappearance, Fiyero becomes the Scarecrow, and the pair leave Oz together. Glinda stays behind to confront the Wizard’s legacy and lead Oz, while the Grimmerie’s final movement leaves open the possibility that she knows Elphaba survived. Their separation is tragic, but “For Good” argues that their friendship has permanently changed both women—and may give Oz its best chance to change too.
