Jules enters the story from a very different setting. He is working for a telephone-based safety or companion service, speaking with women who are frightened while making their way home. When Klara contacts the service, Jules has to guide her remotely through a crisis he cannot physically see or control.
That setup gives the film two simultaneous sources of suspense. Klara is facing an immediate physical threat, while Jules is trying to determine what is really happening from a distance. The audience is asked to weigh Klara’s account, the danger posed by her husband, the possibility of manipulation and the reliability of the person offering help.
The “calendar” in the title is therefore less important as a gimmick than as a symbol of a deadline. The story’s pressure comes from the approaching time limit and from the moral trap built into it: every apparent solution carries the possibility of further violence.
Is The Calendar Killer based on a book?

The telephone service adds another important layer. Jules can listen, advise and remain present, but he cannot simply intervene in person. That distance creates uncertainty for both characters. For that reason, this is a better match for viewers who want a tense psychological thriller with a contained setting and distressing real-world themes than for viewers looking for a conventional police investigation. Reception has been mixed rather than uniformly positive. Rotten Tomatoes lists a 44% Tomatometer score based on three critic reviews and an audience sample of more than 50 ratings.
