How to Train Your Dragon is not one single continuity. It includes Cressida Cowell’s complete twelve-book children’s series, DreamWorks Animation’s three-film story, television and game extensions, the 2025 live-action reimagining, and the Isle of Berk theme-park land at Universal Epic Universe.
For most first-time viewers, the best starting point is the animated trilogy in release order: How to Train Your Dragon (2010), How to Train Your Dragon 2 (2014), and How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World (2019). Read the books separately rather than expecting them to follow the films, then treat the 2025 movie as a new version of the first screen story.
At a glance
| Part of the franchise | What it is | Best starting point |
|---|---|---|
| Cressida Cowell’s books | A complete 12-book children’s series with its own Hiccup, tone, world, and plot. | Read from How to Train Your Dragon through How to Fight a Dragon’s Fury. |
| Animated films | DreamWorks Animation’s three-film screen continuity. | Watch How to Train Your Dragon (2010), How to Train Your Dragon 2 (2014), then The Hidden World (2019). |
| 2025 live-action film | A reimagining of the first animated film, not a fourth animated-film sequel. | Watch it after the animated trilogy to compare the two screen versions, or watch it first if you want the newest interpretation. |
| Television and games | Optional DreamWorks Dragons extensions, including Dragons: The Nine Realms and several games. | Explore these after choosing either the books or films as your main continuity. |
| Theme-park experience | How to Train Your Dragon – Isle of Berk at Universal Epic Universe. | Plan it as a separate travel experience rather than as part of the viewing order. |
What is How to Train Your Dragon about?
How to Train Your Dragon is the story of Hiccup, a Viking from Berk whose relationship with a dragon challenges the assumption that Vikings and dragons must be enemies. In the screen franchise, the dragon is Toothless, a Night Fury who becomes Hiccup’s closest companion. Astrid, Stoick, Berk, the Night Fury species, and later the Light Fury are other central anchors of the film continuity.
The franchise’s emotional center is the friendship between Hiccup and Toothless, but the larger story is about changing a society. Viking training traditionally treats dragons as threats to defeat or control. Hiccup’s discovery that dragons can be understood rather than simply fought changes the relationship between humans and dragons, while also forcing him to grow into leadership.

That basic premise is shared across the major versions, but the versions should not be treated as interchangeable. Cowell’s books, DreamWorks’ animated films, and the 2025 live-action movie tell related stories in different continuities.
The books and films are different continuities
Cressida Cowell created the original children’s book series. The principal series contains twelve books, beginning with How to Train Your Dragon and ending with How to Fight a Dragon’s Fury.
Book Hiccup is a Viking hero whose story has a memoir-like quality. The books have their own characterization, humor, world-building, creatures, and plot structure. The Hiccup and Toothless that many viewers know from the films are therefore not simply the same characters transferred from page to screen.
The films are best understood as adaptations inspired by Cowell’s books, rather than as twelve novels translated directly into a three-film series. Official Universal material credits the films as based on Cowell’s books, while DreamWorks presents the animated trilogy as its own screen franchise.

If you want the original source material, look for How to Train Your Dragon books or search by the author-and-title phrase Cressida Cowell How to Train Your Dragon. Check the edition carefully: a full novel in Cowell’s series is different from a movie storybook, activity book, or film tie-in.
How to watch the animated films
For a first-time viewer, the correct animated-film order is release order:
- How to Train Your Dragon (2010): Hiccup’s relationship with Toothless begins on Berk, establishing the central human–dragon conflict.
- How to Train Your Dragon 2 (2014): The story expands the world and raises the stakes for Hiccup, Toothless, Berk, and the changing human–dragon relationship.
- How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World (2019): The third film serves as the conclusion to the animated trilogy, bringing Hiccup and Toothless’s shared story to its next stage as humans and dragons face the future.
Do not place the 2025 live-action movie between the animated films. It reimagines the first animated story and belongs to a separate live-action screen continuity. The animated trilogy is complete as a three-film arc, while the live-action version is a new presentation of the opening premise.

Where does the television and game material fit?
The wider DreamWorks Dragons ecosystem is larger than the theatrical films. DreamWorks’ official franchise materials group the animated movies with television, games, and other franchise properties. These extensions are useful for fans who want more time in the world, but they are not required viewing for understanding the three animated films.

The 2025 live-action How to Train Your Dragon
The 2025 film is a live-action reimagining of the original animated movie. It returns to the familiar setup: Hiccup lives on Berk, where Vikings and dragons have historically been enemies, and his friendship with Toothless begins to undermine that conflict.

The U.S. theatrical release date was June 13, 2025. The live-action production retains the central Hiccup–Toothless relationship while rebuilding Berk, its Vikings, and its dragons through live-action production design and visual effects. It should be approached as a reinterpretation of the first animated film, not as a continuation of the animated trilogy’s ending.
Where can you watch the 2025 film?
If you are searching for where to watch How to Train Your Dragon, the answer depends on the country, date, subscription tier, and licensing window. The latest source check used for this guide records Amazon’s official entertainment coverage as saying that the film is available on Prime Video, while Netflix’s official title page also lists the film. Those listings are not a permanent worldwide guarantee, so confirm the title in the reader’s local service before publication or before planning a family movie night.
The animated films are also listed by DreamWorks in home-entertainment formats. That is different from saying that all three films are currently included with one particular streaming subscription.
Physical editions and the live-action sequel
Universal announced 4K UHD, Blu-ray, and DVD editions of the 2025 live-action film for August 12, 2025. The announcement described more than 75 minutes of bonus material. Readers who want a permanent copy can compare How to Train Your Dragon 4K UHD, Blu-ray, and DVD editions, but should check the release listing for region compatibility, included discs, subtitles, bonus features, and whether the listing is for the live-action film or an animated release.
Universal’s current release slate lists a live-action How to Train Your Dragon 2 for June 11, 2027. That is a future release listing, not a guarantee that the date, final title styling, casting, or production details cannot change. Any article published near that date should verify the slate again.
Books, physical media, and gifts for fans
The most useful merchandise recommendations depend on which continuity the recipient enjoys. A book fan, an animated-film collector, and a child who simply likes Toothless may want very different products.
| Gift or product type | Best for | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| The twelve-book series | Children’s readers, families, and fans who want Cowell’s original continuity. | Whether the listing is a complete collection, an individual volume, or a companion edition. |
| Movie storybooks | Young readers who prefer a shorter film-based version. | Whether it follows the animated or 2025 live-action film, plus the reading level and edition. |
| Activity and coloring books | Children who want an interactive, screen-related activity. | Age range, included stickers or accessories, and whether the art uses official franchise characters. |
| 4K UHD, Blu-ray, or DVD | Collectors and families who want reliable offline viewing. | Film version, region, disc format, bonus material, and digital-copy terms. |
| Toothless plush or toy | Young fans, gift buyers, and collectors. | Licensing, seller authenticity, safety labeling, materials, dimensions, and recommended age. |
For a licensed gift, do not assume that any dragon-shaped product is an official How to Train Your Dragon item. If you are considering an official Toothless plush, inspect the product photos, licensing language, manufacturer, seller, age guidance, and return policy. A generic Night Fury-inspired toy should be labeled as generic rather than presented as a DreamWorks product.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThe same distinction applies to costumes, role-play gear, Viking accessories, and toys. NBCUniversal describes the franchise’s consumer-products range as including books, role-play gear, costumes, toys, and film-inspired products connected with the 2025 release. That establishes a legitimate merchandise category, but it does not make every marketplace listing licensed.

For younger readers, a How to Train Your Dragon movie storybook or How to Train Your Dragon activity book may be more appropriate than the complete novel series. Verify the age and edition before buying, particularly when a listing uses the franchise name but does not make the publisher or licensing relationship clear.
How to Train Your Dragon – Isle of Berk at Universal Epic Universe
The franchise also has a major physical-world extension: How to Train Your Dragon – Isle of Berk at Universal Epic Universe. NBCUniversal describes the land as an immersive recreation of Berk developed through Universal Creative, DreamWorks Animation, and Universal Pictures.
For fans, the land is best understood as a themed interpretation of the franchise rather than a film set or a replacement for the movies. It supports a separate family-travel angle involving attractions, atmosphere, character experiences, food, and merchandise.

Theme-park information is especially time-sensitive. Before making a trip plan, check the current Universal Orlando information for operating hours, ticket requirements, attraction availability, height or age restrictions, seasonal schedules, and merchandise inventory. Do not rely on an old attraction list or imply that a particular product remains in stock without a date-stamped check.

Common continuity and shopping mistakes
- Calling the films a direct adaptation of all twelve books: They are adaptations inspired by Cowell’s work, with substantial differences.
- Calling the 2025 film a sequel: It reimagines the first animated film rather than continuing the animated trilogy.
- Assuming every television episode or game belongs in one mandatory order: The broader franchise contains optional extensions with changing availability and platform support.
- Promising a streaming service without a territory and date: Prime Video and Netflix listings can vary by country, subscription, and licensing window.
- Calling generic merchandise official: Verify the manufacturer, license information, seller, age range, and product images.
- Publishing old theme-park information as current: Hours, tickets, attractions, restrictions, and inventory require a fresh Universal Orlando check.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are the How to Train Your Dragon books and movies the same story?
No. Cressida Cowell’s twelve books and the DreamWorks films share the premise and names but differ substantially in characterization, tone, world-building, and plot. The films are adaptations inspired by the books, not a direct screen version of all twelve novels.
Best Value
What is the correct How to Train Your Dragon movie order?
Watch the animated films in release order: How to Train Your Dragon (2010), How to Train Your Dragon 2 (2014), and How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World (2019). Watch the 2025 live-action film separately because it reimagines the first animated film.
Is the 2025 How to Train Your Dragon movie a sequel?
No. The 2025 film is a live-action reimagining of the first animated movie. It is not a fourth entry in the animated trilogy and should not be placed between the animated films.
Where can I watch the 2025 How to Train Your Dragon?
The latest source check used for this guide records the film as available through Prime Video and lists it on Netflix’s official title page. Availability can vary by country, subscription tier, and licensing window, so check the local service immediately before watching.
Will there be a live-action How to Train Your Dragon 2?
Universal’s current release slate lists a live-action How to Train Your Dragon 2 for June 11, 2027. The date and other details are future-facing and should be reverified because release plans can change.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Start with the three animated films if you want the central Hiccup-and-Toothless story, read Cressida Cowell’s twelve books as a separate continuity, and treat the 2025 live-action film as a reimagining of the first movie. Television, games, merchandise, and Universal Epic Universe’s Isle of Berk expand the franchise, but each requires its own availability or licensing check.
