Laura dies in the indoor pool. Daniel causes her death while trying to pull her away from Cherry, whom Laura is attempting to drown. Daniel is drugged, confused, and does not realize quickly enough that his mother has stopped struggling. Cherry does not physically kill Laura, and the series never proves that Cherry arrived with a premeditated plan to murder her.

But the ending also confirms that Laura’s suspicions were not simply the paranoid fantasies of a possessive mother. Cherry has concealed a violent history, and the final scene suggests that Daniel may eventually become the next person standing between Cherry and what she wants.

Who dies in The Girlfriend?

Laura Sanderson is the character who dies. Before Cherry reaches the house, Laura crushes pills into Daniel’s drink. She wants to prevent him from leaving and force him to listen to a recording of Tracey Laine, Cherry’s mother, discussing Cherry’s past.

Daniel is still impaired when Cherry arrives. Laura confronts Cherry with a knife, and the argument turns into a fight that moves to the indoor pool. Laura tries to hold Cherry underwater. Daniel manages to intervene and pulls his mother away. He then holds Laura underwater himself, apparently believing he is saving Cherry from an attack.

Daniel is too drugged and disoriented to understand what is happening. Cherry tells him to stop, but Laura has already died. The immediate physical cause of death is therefore Daniel’s restraint, although the circumstances were created by Laura drugging him, attacking Cherry, and trying to control the confrontation.

Did Cherry kill Laura?

Not directly. The series does not show Cherry pushing Laura underwater or arranging the drowning. Daniel is the one who holds Laura down, and his action appears to be an attempt to protect Cherry rather than a conscious decision to kill his mother.

That does not make Cherry innocent. She arrives knowing that Laura has discovered the truth about her father, and she has a strong reason to want Laura out of her life. After Laura dies, Cherry and Daniel do not make a sustained effort to revive her or immediately report what happened. Cherry accepts the result because Laura’s death removes the main threat to her relationship.

This distinction is central to the finale: the show does not prove that Cherry planned Laura’s death, but it does show how readily Cherry can benefit from it.

What are Cherry’s secrets?

Cherry’s relationship with Nicholas

Laura’s first major warning sign is Cherry’s history with Nicholas, her former boyfriend and fiancé. Cherry has not been honest about the relationship or the way it ended. Laura uncovers details suggesting that Cherry responded to rejection with calculated revenge and extreme violence.

The disturbing wedding imagery, including the blood-covered cake, becomes a visual expression of what Laura is trying to uncover: Cherry does not simply suffer when a relationship ends. She may retaliate against the person who rejected her.

The series does not present every detail of the Nicholas incident in a conventional courtroom-style explanation. Instead, it builds the accusation through Laura’s investigation, Cherry’s evasions, and the pattern of behavior surrounding the breakup.

What happened to Cherry’s father?

Cherry’s father, John Laine, fell from a construction site and suffered catastrophic spinal and head injuries. He survived but was left severely disabled.

Tracey makes clear to Laura that she does not regard John’s fall as an ordinary accident. Her account suggests that Cherry pushed or otherwise caused John to fall. Tracey presents it as an act Cherry did not intend to make fatal, but the implication is still unmistakable: Cherry was responsible for the injuries.

In the finale, Cherry effectively confirms the moral logic behind what happened when she says that John deserved it because of the damage he had done to the family. That statement is not a detailed confession of every physical action, but it shows that Cherry does not view the assault as an unforgivable injustice. She believes her father’s abuse or destructive behavior justified what she did.

Is there a larger pattern?

Tracey’s recollections suggest that Cherry has behaved this way for much longer than Laura realizes. She describes a person who becomes dangerous after fixing on an objective, whether the obstacle is a childhood conflict, a romantic rival, or someone who threatens her plans.

These additional stories come through Tracey, not independent evidence. They should therefore be treated as testimony from a damaged and frightened mother rather than as an objectively documented biography of Cherry. Still, the finale uses Tracey’s account to validate the possibility that Cherry’s earlier behavior was part of a consistent pattern, not a series of unrelated misunderstandings.

Why does Laura turn against Cherry?

Laura’s distrust begins with several real inconsistencies. Cherry lies or conceals information about her education, travel, clothing, and social background. She also steals one of Laura’s bracelets. Laura sees Cherry’s behavior around Daniel and the family as manipulative, although her interpretation is intensified by her own fear of losing her son.

Laura is wealthy, socially established, and deeply attached to Daniel. Cherry appears to come from a very different background and threatens the closed emotional world Laura has built around her adult son. That makes Laura’s suspicions difficult to separate from class anxiety and possessiveness.

As Laura investigates, however, she finds evidence that Cherry really has lied and concealed important facts. This is what makes the series’ central conflict more complicated than a simple story about a jealous mother inventing a threat. Laura’s judgment is distorted, but it is not entirely wrong.

What terrible things does Laura do?

Laura gradually becomes an antagonist in her own right. She falsely tells Cherry that Daniel has died after Daniel is badly injured in a climbing accident. Daniel survives, but Cherry believes he is dead and leaves. Daniel later interprets Cherry’s disappearance as abandonment.

Laura also interferes with Cherry’s housing and employment and tries to expose Cherry’s previous relationship. Her behavior is not limited to gathering information: she actively removes options from Cherry’s life and manipulates Daniel’s understanding of what happened.

Her final plan goes further. Laura drugs her own son, intends to use Tracey’s recording to turn him against Cherry, and then attacks Cherry with a knife. By the pool confrontation, Laura is no longer merely investigating a dangerous woman. She has become willing to use violence and coercion herself.

What does the final time jump reveal?

Several months after Laura’s death, Daniel and Cherry appear to be married or living together as a married couple. Cherry is pregnant, Howard is comfortable with the new family arrangement, and the couple occupies the Sanderson home. On the surface, Cherry has obtained the relationship, security, status, and lifestyle she wanted.

Then the family cat, Moses, finds something beneath a table. Daniel retrieves Laura’s phone, charges it, and examines the files. He discovers the recording Laura made during her visit to Tracey.

Tracey’s warning is the final revelation. She tells Laura not to trust Cherry during the good times because Cherry will eventually want something Daniel is unwilling to give her—and will find a way to get rid of him.

Daniel looks at Cherry in horror. The expression shows that he now understands the danger Laura was trying, however destructively, to reveal. The series cuts off before Cherry harms him. There is no confirmed second murder and no explicit evidence that Cherry has already decided to kill Daniel.

Will Cherry kill Daniel?

The finale leaves that as a threat rather than a confirmed event. Cherry has not killed Daniel on-screen, and the recording does not prove that she will do so. It does, however, establish the possibility that Daniel may eventually become an obstacle to Cherry’s plans.

Cherry’s behavior after Laura’s death makes the possibility disturbing. She appears capable of loving Daniel while also treating people as obstacles when they interfere with the life she wants. Her attachment may be genuine, but the series suggests that genuine emotion does not prevent her from becoming destructive.

That ambiguity is more unsettling than a straightforward revelation that Cherry was secretly planning the pool attack. If she had arranged every event, the ending would reduce her to a conventional mastermind. Instead, the series presents her as volatile, emotionally overwhelmed, and capable of opportunistic calculation. Laura’s death may not have been Cherry’s plan, but Cherry is willing to live with the outcome.

Was Laura right about Cherry?

Yes—but not in the uncomplicated way Laura wants Daniel to believe.

Laura is right that Cherry has hidden a violent past. Tracey’s story about John, the evidence surrounding Nicholas, and the final warning all support the idea that Cherry can harm people who obstruct her. Laura’s central instinct—that Cherry represents a genuine danger—is validated.

But being right about Cherry does not excuse Laura’s conduct. She lies about Daniel’s death, sabotages Cherry’s life, drugs Daniel, and attacks Cherry with a knife. Her possessiveness helps create the exact conditions in which Daniel becomes alienated from both women and ultimately causes her death.

The series therefore refuses to make either woman the sole villain. Laura tries to protect Daniel by controlling him. Cherry tries to secure Daniel by manipulating the people around him. Both women claim to be acting out of love, and both repeatedly treat Daniel as something to possess rather than an adult capable of making his own decisions.

What is the meaning of The Girlfriend ending?

The finale reverses the apparent moral arrangement. For much of the season, Laura looks like the suspicious, controlling mother who may be inventing a threat because she cannot accept Daniel’s relationship. Cherry’s perspective then encourages the viewer to question Laura’s version of events.

By the end, Laura’s methods have made her dangerous, but her fears have also been substantially confirmed. Cherry is not merely an innocent young woman persecuted by an elitist mother. Nor is Laura a clear-eyed protector whose actions are justified by the danger she has identified.

The ending’s central idea is that both women can be manipulative and damaging at the same time. Laura’s obsession drives the final confrontation, while Cherry’s past and her reaction to Laura’s death suggest that the cycle of control may continue. Daniel’s discovery does not prove that Cherry planned the drowning. It proves that Laura was investigating a real danger—and that her own behavior helped bring about the catastrophe she feared.

How the Prime Video ending differs from the novel

The television series is adapted from Michelle Frances’s novel The Girlfriend, but the two versions do not end in exactly the same way. In the book, reporting describes Cherry drugging Daniel and manipulating Laura into a fatal accident involving a hole in the garden. The Prime Video adaptation instead uses the indoor-pool confrontation, with Daniel inadvertently drowning Laura.

That difference matters. In the television version, the mechanics of Laura’s death leave more uncertainty around Cherry’s intentions. Daniel’s intervention is the direct cause, while Cherry’s responsibility is moral and circumstantial rather than conclusively premeditated.

Readers who want the source material can read Michelle Frances’s The Girlfriend novel, the book behind the adaptation. The story is also available as the The Girlfriend audiobook narrated by Henrietta Meire. Neither format should be treated as a transcript of the series finale: the book’s climactic mechanics differ from what happens on Prime Video.

Final answer: Laura dies because Daniel holds her underwater while trying to save Cherry. Cherry does not demonstrably plan the drowning, but the ending confirms that Laura’s fears about Cherry’s capacity for manipulation and violence were credible. Daniel has discovered the warning—and the series ends just before we learn whether Cherry will make him her next obstacle.

The finale strongly suggests that Cherry may eventually harm Daniel if he becomes an obstacle to what she wants. However, the series ends before Cherry does anything to him, so his future is a threat rather than a confirmed event.

The Bottom Line
