Leanne Morgan as Leanne Murphy
Leanne Murphy is the emotional center of the show. After 33 years of marriage, she is forced to confront a future she never expected when Bill leaves her for another woman. The change affects more than her relationship status: it unsettles her finances, routines, family role, friendships, and understanding of who she is outside marriage.

Leanne is a mother and grandmother who has spent much of her adult life caring for other people. The sitcom’s central question is therefore not simply whether she will date again or reconcile with Bill. It is whether she can make choices for herself and build a life that is not defined exclusively by being a wife, mother, or grandmother.
The character is connected to Leanne Morgan’s public comedic voice and the series was inspired by Morgan’s stand-up, but Leanne is fictionalized. Leanne Murphy is not a literal account of Morgan’s life, and the sitcom’s family, marriage, and plot belong to the show’s fictional story world.
Kristen Johnston as Carol
Carol is Leanne’s sister and her sharpest contrast. She has been divorced twice, has no children, is more socially adventurous, and is more comfortable with a bar than with church. Where Leanne has spent decades inside a conventional marriage and family structure, Carol represents a more rebellious and independent version of adulthood.
That contrast does not make Carol detached. She is fiercely loyal to Leanne and acts as her ride-or-die support system. Carol can challenge Leanne, push her toward unfamiliar experiences, and say the thing other family members are avoiding. Their disagreements create comedy, but their bond is one of the show’s most important relationships.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteLeanne and Carol also give the series two different answers to the question of what a woman’s life can look like later in adulthood. Leanne is starting over after losing the structure she expected to keep; Carol has already lived outside that structure. Neither sister is presented as a simple model for the other, which gives their arguments more substance than a standard opposites-attract pairing.
The older generation: Mama Margaret and Daddy John
Celia Weston as Mama Margaret
Mama Margaret is Leanne and Carol’s mother and the family matriarch. She is faithful, optimistic, community-oriented, and deeply involved in the family’s daily life. Her positive outlook gives the household a stabilizing presence even when the younger generation is dealing with divorce, parenting pressure, and uncertain futures.

Margaret’s health scare helps launch the early Season 1 conflict. Leanne tries to keep her mother from learning that Bill has left, turning the marriage breakdown into a family secret. The attempt to protect Margaret creates comic complications, but it also reveals how quickly Leanne resumes her familiar role as the person who manages everyone else’s emotions.
Margaret is also portrayed as unusually prepared for her own mortality while remaining energetic and engaged. That combination—practical about death but positive about life—adds another perspective to Leanne’s fear of change.

Blake Clark as Daddy John
Daddy John is Leanne and Carol’s father. He is old-school about gender roles, outspoken, strong-willed, and devoted to his family. His traditional outlook often places him at an angle to Leanne’s attempt to become more independent.
John’s presence gives the sitcom a generational counterpoint. Leanne’s new life is not being built in a vacuum: she has to negotiate the expectations of the parents who helped shape her, as well as the assumptions of the marriage she is leaving behind.
Ryan Stiles as Bill
Bill is Leanne’s husband at the beginning of the story and becomes her ex-husband after leaving their 33-year marriage for another woman. He built an RV business to support the family and is described as a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and son-in-law before his decision destroys the family’s stable arrangement.
Bill is the event that sets Leanne in motion, but he is not treated only as an offscreen villain. His departure creates an ongoing relationship conflict because he remains connected to Leanne, their children, their grandchild, and the family business. His uncertainty after leaving also complicates the question of whether the marriage is truly finished emotionally, even if its old form has ended.

The adult children: Tyler and Josie
Graham Rogers as Tyler
Tyler is Leanne and Bill’s son. He is married, has a baby, and works for Bill at the family RV business. He is Leanne’s “pride and joy” and occupies the family’s responsible golden-child role.
Tyler is also facing a transition of his own. As a new father, he is trying to establish his own household while his parents’ marriage suddenly collapses. That makes it difficult for him to remain only a son responding to a family crisis; he has responsibilities to his wife and baby as well.
His connection to Bill’s RV business links the family drama to practical concerns about work and independence. Tyler is caught between his parents not only emotionally but also through the family enterprise.
Hannah Pilkes as Josie
Josie is Leanne and Bill’s daughter. She is free-spirited, fun-seeking, and willing to break rules. Her jobs and relationships are less settled than Tyler’s, and she accepts the role of family rebel rather than trying to compete for the golden-child position.
Josie gives the ensemble a younger and less conventional response to the family crisis. Her instability is part of the character’s identity, not merely a source of isolated jokes. In contrast with Tyler, Josie shows what happens when an adult child resists—or simply fails to fit—the family’s preferred expectations.
Jayma Mays as Mary
Mary is Leanne’s neighbor and close acquaintance. She wants a deeper friendship with Leanne, giving Leanne a path into a social life beyond her relatives and her failed marriage.

Mary matters because Leanne’s recovery is not limited to family support. The character represents the possibility of building new community connections later in life, even when forming friendships can feel awkward or unfamiliar after decades of being part of a couple.
Tim Daly and the supporting cast
Netflix’s official renewal announcement lists Tim Daly, Annie Gonzalez, and Blake Gibbons among the cast. The official material reviewed for this guide does not provide enough character-level information to assign each performer a definitive role without risking an incorrect name or relationship.

For that reason, they are best identified as supporting cast rather than given unverified character descriptions. Cast databases can contain incomplete or conflicting information, so a character name should be added only when it is confirmed by an official credit, Netflix character guide, or reliable episode-level source.

Season 1 character development Spoilers for the Season 1 direction
Leanne uses the aftermath of the divorce to show small steps toward independence rather than presenting reinvention as a single dramatic decision. Family secrets, sibling disagreements, church connections, social outings, and new activities all become part of Leanne’s adjustment.
By the end of Season 1, Leanne is exercising, spending more time with loved ones, reconnecting with church friends, and joining a book club. These details matter because they show her developing routines and relationships that belong to her, not just replacing Bill with another romantic partner. The season’s broader arc is about reclaiming a self that had become submerged inside marriage and family obligations.
Is Leanne coming back for Season 2?
Yes. Netflix renewed Leanne for Season 2 on October 27, 2025. Netflix’s 2026 programming guide lists Season 2 as a 2026 title, but an exact premiere date was not established in the official information reviewed for this guide.
