That does not mean the Dutton family’s story ends with 1883. The series is the first origin chapter in the modern Yellowstone chronology, and 1923 follows a later generation. But 1923 is a separate series—not a renamed or replacement Season 2.
Is 1883 Season 2 happening?
There is currently no 1883 Season 2 to watch, and there is no confirmed release date. Paramount’s current catalog lists 1883 as a 2021 drama with one season and 10 episodes. The company’s franchise material describes it as a miniseries whose story takes place across those 10 episodes.
#1 Best Overall
The most accurate way to describe the situation is that 1883 was designed as a closed-ended limited series, rather than an ongoing drama that was canceled before its story could be completed. Taylor Sheridan has also described the project as a specific, complete journey. That distinction matters: the absence of Season 2 is not the same as an unresolved cancellation.
Why do viewers think there should be a second season?
1883 became an important part of the expanding Yellowstone universe, and Paramount continued announcing and promoting related projects after the show’s success. That broader franchise activity has led some viewers to interpret every new Dutton or Sheridan project as a continuation of 1883.
However, a new series in the same fictional universe is not automatically 1883 Season 2. The original show follows one particular wagon-train journey, and its 10-episode structure was built around completing that journey. Paramount’s current catalog still lists only that single season.
How many episodes of 1883 are there?
1883 has 10 episodes in total. The first two episodes premiered on December 19, 2021, and the listed finale, “This Is Not Your Heaven,” arrived on February 27, 2022.

What is 1883 about?
The series is a Yellowstone origin story about the Dutton family’s earliest known journey west. James Dutton, Margaret Dutton, their children and a larger group of travelers leave Texas and cross the Great Plains on the way to Montana.
The wagon train is led by Shea Brennan, with Thomas serving as his close associate. The journey is presented as a dangerous migration rather than a simple relocation, with the group facing the physical risks of the landscape and the uncertainty of frontier travel.
The principal cast includes Tim McGraw as James Dutton, Faith Hill as Margaret Dutton, Isabel May, Sam Elliott as Shea Brennan and LaMonica Garrett as Thomas.
Spoiler-free explanation of the ending and the Dutton timeline
Spoiler warning: the following section discusses what the ending means for the franchise, without recounting every event in the finale.
The ending is best understood as the completion of the journey that 1883 set out to tell. It establishes the historical foundation for the Dutton family’s connection to Montana and provides context for the generations seen later in the franchise. Because the series was structured as a finished origin story, the finale is not designed as a conventional cliffhanger leading directly into Season 2.
That is why a continuation would not simply be “the next season” of the same journey. A further Dutton story would involve a different time period, generation or conflict—and that is the approach taken by the franchise’s other series.
Is 1923 the second season of 1883?
No. 1923 is the closest direct follow-up for viewers who want to continue exploring the Dutton family chronology, but it is a separate series with its own cast, setting and storyline. Paramount’s official Dutton-family viewing guide presents it as a later origin-story chapter.
The titles refer to different periods:
- 1883: follows the Dutton family and their companions during their westward journey from Texas toward Montana.
- 1923: shifts to a later Dutton generation and a different historical moment.
- Yellowstone: focuses on the modern Dutton family and the Montana ranch at the center of the main series.
You can watch 1923 as part of the wider Dutton story, but it should not be labeled 1883 Season 2.

Is Lawmen: Bass Reeves connected to 1883?
Lawmen: Bass Reeves is also not 1883 Season 2. It is a separate Taylor Sheridan/Paramount+ Western project. It may appeal to viewers looking for another historical Western from the same creative ecosystem, but it does not continue the Dutton family’s storyline or pick up the ending of 1883.
Where can you watch 1883?
Paramount’s streaming guide lists all 10 episodes on Paramount+. The official series listing also identifies the complete first season. Availability, subscription terms and regional access can change, so check the current listing for your country before subscribing.
If you are searching for the show, use the full title and look specifically for the 10-episode limited series. A listing for another Yellowstone-universe production is not evidence that a second season exists.

What should you watch after 1883?
- Watch 1923 next if your priority is following another generation of the Dutton family.
- Watch Yellowstone if you want the modern ranch story that made the Dutton universe widely known.
- Try Lawmen: Bass Reeves if you want another historical Western associated with Taylor Sheridan and Paramount+, but do not expect a continuation of 1883.
- Rewatch or buy the complete 1883 season if you want to revisit the original journey in its intended, self-contained form.
Final answer: will there be an 1883 Season 2?
There is no 1883 Season 2, no announced release date and no official indication that the original limited series is being revived as a conventional second season. 1883 is a complete 10-episode story. For more Dutton family history, continue with 1923; for another Sheridan-associated historical Western, consider Lawmen: Bass Reeves.
