Best overall: Wallace & Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl is the strongest all-around movie added to Netflix in the United States during January 2025. It is clever, family-friendly, accessible to newcomers, and distinctive enough to stand out in a month whose best offerings were often catalog acquisitions rather than brand-new Netflix films.
This ranking treats “new” as new to Netflix U.S. in January 2025, not necessarily a movie that premiered for the first time that month. Alongside Netflix releases such as Back in Action and Ad Vitam, the month brought acclaimed films including Apollo 13, Erin Brockovich, Interstellar, Notting Hill, and Hereditary. Catalog availability changes, so none of these titles should be assumed to remain on Netflix today.

1. Wallace & Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl
Best for: Families, animation fans, and anyone who wants a smart comedy that does not require homework before watching.
Nick Park’s stop-motion duo return in a feature-length mystery involving Wallace’s high-tech garden-gnome invention and the return of the memorable villain Feathers McGraw. The result is an unusually strong lead recommendation: newcomers can follow it easily, while longtime fans get the visual detail, eccentric inventions, and dry British humor associated with the franchise.

Vengeance Most Fowl was one of the few January Netflix originals that contemporary critics treated as an unqualified recommendation. It also gives this list something the month otherwise lacked: a genuinely family-friendly film with enough wit for adults. The movie arrived on Netflix on January 3, 2025, outside the U.K., according to contemporary reporting.
Fans who want something tangible beyond the stream can look for Vengeance Most Fowl merchandise through the official Wallace & Gromit store. Regional inventory and any retail or partner availability should be checked separately.
2. Number 24
Best for: Viewers who want a focused historical thriller with resistance and espionage elements.
This Norwegian period thriller is based on the real life of Gunnar Sønsteby, a World War II resistance fighter. Rather than treating history as a backdrop for spectacle, the film places its protagonist in a world of divided loyalties, moral compromise, and decisions whose consequences extend beyond a single mission.
Its arrival on Netflix represented its U.S. debut after a late-2024 release in Norway. That makes it a particularly useful discovery for viewers who have already exhausted the service’s more familiar English-language war dramas. The film is compact and direct, using thriller mechanics to make its historical subject accessible without turning the story into a generic action movie.
3. Apollo 13
Best for: True-story drama, space survival, and viewers looking for a dependable prestige rewatch.
Ron Howard’s 1995 film dramatizes the aborted 1970 lunar mission and divides its attention between the astronauts in danger and the mission-control teams trying to bring them home. That dual perspective is central to the film’s tension: the danger is physical for the crew, but solving it requires careful, collective problem-solving on Earth.
Apollo 13 remains one of the safest recommendations in this group. It has the scale of a space movie, the structure of a survival thriller, and the emotional clarity of a true story. Because the broad outline is known, the suspense comes from the film’s execution rather than from pretending the audience does not know the outcome.

4. Erin Brockovich
Best for: Inspirational true stories, legal and investigative dramas, and Julia Roberts fans.
Steven Soderbergh’s film follows Erin Brockovich’s campaign against Pacific Gas & Electric over groundwater contamination in Hinkley, California. The story combines investigation, legal pressure, and personal hardship, but it avoids becoming a procedural that asks viewers to care about paperwork more than people.
Julia Roberts gives the film its driving force and won the 2001 Academy Award for Best Actress for the role. Her performance makes Brockovich’s confrontational manner and lack of formal legal credentials part of the drama rather than obstacles the film needs to apologize for. It is a grounded, motivating choice for viewers who want a film about persistence without sacrificing character or humor.
5. Interstellar
Best for: Ambitious science fiction, emotional spectacle, and Christopher Nolan viewers.

Its premise supports the kind of large-scale imagery associated with modern science fiction, but the film’s central appeal is emotional: the cosmic journey is also a story about family, separation, and the cost of trying to save a future that may not be witnessed firsthand.
The movie’s reputation grew substantially after its initial release, and its combination of visual scale and sentiment makes it the list’s most expansive viewing experience. It is also a good choice for a rewatch because its ideas, imagery, and emotional relationships give viewers more to revisit than the basic survival premise.
If you would rather own a high-rewatch-value title than depend on a changing streaming catalog, a current listing for an Interstellar 4K Blu-ray is worth checking. Edition, price, and stock can change, so this should be treated as an ownership option rather than a claim about present availability.
6. Notting Hill
Best for: Romantic-comedy comfort viewing.
This 1999 romance pairs a famous actor with a mild-mannered London bookseller, then builds its comedy around the practical and cultural complications of that mismatch. Julia Roberts and Hugh Grant provide the necessary chemistry, while the film’s supporting characters and gentle awkwardness keep the premise from feeling like a simple celebrity fantasy.
Notting Hill is an especially useful addition to a January list otherwise weighted toward war stories, survival dramas, thrillers, and horror. It is warm, rewatchable, and easy to recommend when the viewer wants charm rather than intensity. The film’s appeal depends less on surprise than on its tone and the comfort of watching two stars settle into a familiar romantic-comedy rhythm.

7. Hereditary
Best for: Serious horror and psychologically intense viewing.
Ari Aster’s feature debut begins with a family dealing with grief and inherited trauma, then steadily turns that domestic distress into something far more disturbing. Toni Collette is at the center of the film, giving the family’s unraveling an emotional force that makes the horror feel personal before it becomes overtly supernatural.
The film works both as a dysfunctional-family drama and as a terrifying cult-horror movie. That combination is also why it needs a clear warning: this is not a casual background choice or a light supernatural thriller. Viewers looking for a demanding horror film with a sustained sense of dread should put it near the top of their list; viewers wanting a relaxed movie night should choose almost anything else in this ranking.
8. Back in Action
Best for: Mainstream action-comedy, star-driven entertainment, and viewers who want a straightforward Netflix original.
Cameron Diaz and Jamie Foxx play former CIA operatives who leave that life behind in an attempt to build a family. The plan collapses when their past pulls them back into espionage. The premise gives the film an obvious engine: domestic responsibilities collide with professional skills that the characters thought they had retired.
Netflix released Back in Action on January 17, 2025. Its audience response was enormous by Netflix’s own viewing measures: it opened at No. 1 on the English-language film list with 46.8 million views, reached No. 1 in 85 countries, and remained No. 1 for three consecutive weeks.
Those figures establish major popularity, not automatic critical superiority. Back in Action belongs on this list because it is a useful choice for viewers seeking accessible action-comedy and because its audience reach was too significant to ignore—not because viewership alone settles the question of quality.

This French Netflix original arrived on January 10, 2025. It offers a fast-moving international alternative to the English-language action titles that usually dominate streaming recommendation lists, with a revenge-and-conspiracy setup designed to keep the story moving rather than linger on procedural detail.
Netflix’s January reporting showed strong interest: Ad Vitam led the non-English film list for a second week and later reached 54.5 million views since its debut on Netflix’s global most-popular non-English films list. That performance makes it a worthwhile recommendation for viewers who want international action with a clear commercial-thriller pace. As with Back in Action, the viewing figures are evidence of reach, not a substitute for individual taste.
10. The Sand Castle
Best for: Psychologically tense international drama and viewers willing to sit with ambiguity.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesMatty Brown’s Lebanese drama follows a family stranded on a barren Mediterranean island. As the film proceeds, the family’s past and the circumstances of their escape gradually emerge. The island is fictional and is placed somewhere off Greece and Turkey, giving the story an isolated setting without reducing it to a conventional survival adventure.
Nadine Labaki, Ziad Bakri, and siblings Zain and Riman Al Rafeea lead the cast. The survival premise, refugee-related subtext, and gradual revelation of the family’s history make this a more demanding recommendation than the broad comedies or classic dramas above it.
The film was included among the January 24 arrivals in a contemporaneous schedule and was covered by Netflix’s Tudum on January 29. Netflix later reported 4.9 million views for it during the week covered, enough to place it at No. 3 on the non-English film list. It is an appropriate final selection because it expands the list beyond familiar Hollywood genres without pretending that every worthwhile movie is effortless viewing.

Netflix’s own Top 10 reports are useful for identifying audience traction, particularly for Back in Action, Ad Vitam, and The Sand Castle. They are not an objective quality ranking, which is why the list weighs critical reputation, distinctiveness, genre variety, and usefulness to different kinds of viewers as well as popularity.
Availability and regional warning
Netflix catalogs change over time and vary by country. The dates and additions described here refer to the United States unless a different geography is specifically noted. A movie’s January 2025 arrival does not guarantee that it remains in the Netflix U.S. catalog now, so check the current Netflix listing before planning a movie night.
Netflix also maintains an official Netflix merchandise shop for licensed products. That is separate from streaming availability, and inventory, geography, and any publisher or affiliate partnership should be verified before purchase.
Reporting basis: The list draws on contemporary January 2025 coverage, Netflix Tudum material, and Netflix’s weekly Top 10 reporting. View counts refer to Netflix-reported viewing figures and should not be read as critic scores.
