There is a date mismatch in the puzzle request: Sunday, June 1, 2025 was Connections game #721. Game #722 was published on Monday, June 2, 2025. Because the requested number is #722, the hints and answers below cover June 2 first; the June 1 answers for #721 appear afterward.

Connections gives you 16 words and asks you to sort them into four groups of four. Each group has a shared connection, but some words are designed to fit more than one possible category. You can make up to four mistakes, so the safest approach is to identify the most specific group before committing.

The 16 words were: SPHYNX, TREASURE, MARKDOWN, ODYSSEY, JACKPOT, FRANKINCENSE, MYRRH, VALUE, NYMPH, JOURNEY, ESTEEM, NICKNAME, VOYAGE, PRIZE, RHYTHM and QUEST.

Category Words
Expedition JOURNEY, ODYSSEY, QUEST, VOYAGE
Hold dear ESTEEM, PRIZE, TREASURE, VALUE
Words whose only vowel is “Y” MYRRH, NYMPH, RHYTHM, SPHYNX
Names ending in “K” plus word FRANKINCENSE, JACKPOT, MARKDOWN, NICKNAME

1. Expedition: JOURNEY, ODYSSEY, QUEST and VOYAGE

All four words describe a trip, particularly one that is extended, purposeful or adventurous. A journey is a trip from one place to another; an odyssey suggests a long and eventful one; a quest is a purposeful search or mission; and a voyage is an extended journey, traditionally by sea but also more broadly.

This is the cleanest starting point in the grid. Once these four are removed, the remaining words become easier to separate.

2. Hold dear: ESTEEM, PRIZE, TREASURE and VALUE

These words can all express regarding someone or something as important, precious or worthy. You may esteem a person, prize an object or quality, treasure a memory or relationship, and value someone’s contribution.

The noun sense of prize can be distracting because it also means an award. In this group, it is being used as a verb meaning to value highly.

3. Words whose only vowel is “Y”: MYRRH, NYMPH, RHYTHM and SPHYNX

In the conventional spelling used by the puzzle, these four words contain none of the traditional vowel letters A, E, I, O or U. The letter Y supplies the vowel role or sound:

  • MYRRH: an aromatic resin
  • NYMPH: a mythological nature spirit
  • RHYTHM: a pattern of beats or movement
  • SPHYNX: a mythical creature or, in another spelling context, a cat breed

The category is about the letters in the spellings, not a claim that English has only one universally agreed definition of a vowel. That unusual spelling pattern is the key that separates these words from the remaining four.

4. Names ending in “K” plus word: FRANKINCENSE, JACKPOT, MARKDOWN and NICKNAME

Each answer begins with a familiar name ending in the letter K:

  • FRANK + INCENSE = FRANKINCENSE
  • JACK + POT = JACKPOT
  • MARK + DOWN = MARKDOWN
  • NICK + NAME = NICKNAME

This is the purple group’s word-boundary trick. The full answers are ordinary words, but their beginnings can be read as FRANK, JACK, MARK and NICK followed by another word or word segment.

A practical solving route for #722

  1. Circle the travel words: JOURNEY, ODYSSEY, QUEST and VOYAGE form a relatively direct set.
  2. Test the value-related words: ESTEEM, PRIZE, TREASURE and VALUE all work as ways to express high regard.
  3. Inspect the unusual spellings: MYRRH, NYMPH, RHYTHM and SPHYNX share the absence of A, E, I, O and U.
  4. Use the leftovers: The remaining words split into FRANK-INCENSE, JACK-POT, MARK-DOWN and NICK-NAME.

The important trap is to avoid treating TREASURE, PRIZE or VALUE as nouns only. The verbs “treasure,” “prize” and “value” all mean to regard something highly, while ESTEEM supplies the same idea for people or things.

Connections answers for Sunday, June 1, 2025: game #721

If you meant the date in the headline rather than the puzzle number, the June 1 grid was Connections #721. Its groups were:

Category Words
Local watering hole DIVE, ESTABLISHMENT, HAUNT, JOINT
Compete in a modern pentathlon FENCE, RIDE, SHOOT, SWIM
Ensure, as a victory CINCH, GUARANTEE, ICE, LOCK
___ fund HEDGE, MUTUAL, SLUSH, TRUST

How the #721 groups work

  • Local watering hole: A DIVE, ESTABLISHMENT, HAUNT or JOINT can refer to a place people regularly go for a drink or social visit.
  • Compete in a modern pentathlon: The event includes FENCE, RIDE, SHOOT and SWIM. In the puzzle, each word functions as a verb describing one of those activities.
  • Ensure, as a victory: To CINCH, GUARANTEE, ICE or LOCK something is to make it certain—in this case, a victory.
  • ___ fund: HEDGE fund, MUTUAL fund, SLUSH fund and TRUST fund are familiar phrases.

Why the date and puzzle number can look inconsistent

Connections is released daily at midnight in the player’s local time zone. That means a reader’s calendar date can differ depending on location, publication timing and when an answer article is indexed. For this puzzle pair, however, the game numbering is clear: Sunday, June 1, 2025 was #721, and Monday, June 2, 2025 was #722.

So an article labeled “June 1” and “#722” may be combining the date of one puzzle with the number of the next. Checking both identifiers is the best way to avoid using the wrong answer set.
