1. John David Washington
John David Washington is Denzel and Pauletta Washington’s eldest child. ABC News identifies him as born on July 28, 1984. Before establishing himself as an actor, he played professional football. He later moved into acting across film, television, and theater, building a career that is distinct from his father’s even though the family connection is an unavoidable part of public discussion.

John David played Boy Willie in The Piano Lesson. He first took on the role in the Broadway production and later reprised it in Malcolm’s film adaptation. That collaboration makes the project especially significant: John David was not simply appearing in a family member’s movie, but returning to a role he had already developed onstage.
2. Katia Washington
Katia Washington has worked behind the camera as a producer. Her role in The Piano Lesson was executive producer, not director or cast member. The distinction matters because the film brought several members of the Washington family into different parts of the production rather than placing them all in front of the camera.
Katia’s producing work represents a different branch of the family’s entertainment careers. While John David and Olivia are known primarily for acting and Malcolm led the film as director, Katia’s contribution was connected to the organization and development of the production.
3. Olivia Washington
Olivia Washington is an actor and Malcolm Washington’s twin sister. She appeared in The Piano Lesson, giving the film two of Denzel and Pauletta Washington’s children in the cast alongside John David.
Olivia has also spoken publicly about her parents’ support for her acting. In an interview reported by ABC News, she described their approach as combining criticism with strong encouragement. That is her reported characterization of her parents’ support, rather than a basis for making broader claims about the family’s private life.
4. Malcolm Washington
Malcolm Washington is a filmmaker and director. He directed The Piano Lesson, a screen adaptation of August Wilson’s play. Netflix’s official coverage identifies Malcolm as the film’s director and highlights the participation of his father and siblings.
The film marked an important expansion of the family’s professional profile. Denzel Washington was involved as a producer; Malcolm took the director’s chair; Katia served as an executive producer; and John David and Olivia appeared onscreen. Malcolm’s role therefore placed him in a leadership position on a major family project rather than simply extending the family’s acting tradition.
Are Malcolm and Olivia Washington twins?
Yes. Malcolm and Olivia Washington are twins. The cited family coverage gives April 10, 1991, as their shared birth date. John David is the eldest, Katia follows him, and Olivia and Malcolm are the younger twins.

What has Denzel Washington said about family life?
In an older interview with The Guardian, Denzel Washington discussed having four children and the challenge of balancing a demanding acting career with family responsibilities. Those comments provide historical context, but they should not be treated as a current account of the family’s private life.
There is also no need to fill in gaps with speculation. Public appearances and entertainment credits do not establish details about the family’s finances, residences, relationships, personal beliefs, or private dynamics. The most reliable public picture is narrower: four adult children, each pursuing a different role in entertainment, with The Piano Lesson serving as their strongest documented shared project.
