Death by Lightning is a 2025 Netflix limited drama about President James A. Garfield and his assassin, Charles J. Guiteau. The title is not literal: Garfield was shot in 1881, survived for more than two months, and died after a prolonged medical crisis. The four-episode series uses that tragedy to explore political patronage, Republican factionalism, obsession, medicine, and the unrealized possibilities of Garfield’s presidency.

Death by Lightning is a four-episode Netflix limited drama about James A. Garfield, the obscure former congressman who became the 20th president of the United States, and Charles J. Guiteau, the deluded office seeker who shot him. Despite its title, Garfield was not literally killed by lightning. He was shot at Washington, D.C.’s Baltimore and Potomac Railroad Station on July 2, 1881, survived for more than two months, and died on September 19 after a prolonged medical crisis.

Created by Mike Makowsky, the 2025 series adapts Candice Millard’s nonfiction history Destiny of the Republic: A Tale of Madness, Medicine and the Murder of a President. It is best approached not as a conventional assassination thriller, but as a political and medical tragedy about ambition, patronage, obsession, and the historical possibilities lost when Garfield’s presidency was cut short.

What is Death by Lightning about?

The series follows two sharply contrasting lives. Garfield rises from poverty and relative obscurity to national political prominence and the presidency. Guiteau, meanwhile, becomes convinced that his own political importance entitles him to recognition and a government appointment. Their paths eventually meet in the railroad station shooting that changes American history.

Garfield’s presidency had barely begun when the attack took place. He did not die at the station, however. The bullet left him alive, and the story then becomes a prolonged struggle involving the president’s physical decline, the efforts of his doctors, the political consequences of his incapacity, and the question of what might have happened had he survived.

That structure gives the drama a wider scope than the phrase “presidential assassination” might suggest. The shooting is the central event, but the series is also about the political system that surrounded Garfield, the man who believed a government job was his due, and the medical limitations of the late nineteenth century.

Why is it called Death by Lightning?

The title is metaphorical and ironic. Garfield was killed by an assassin’s gunshot, not by a bolt of lightning. The lightning image evokes the sudden, almost unbelievable force with which violence can destroy a political future, while also pointing toward language associated with Garfield and the series’ broader interest in fate and contingency.

The distinction matters because Garfield’s death was not immediate. He survived the July 2 shooting until September 19, 1881. That interval is historically important: the bullet, the treatment he received, the assumptions made by his physicians, and the uncertainty surrounding his condition all form part of the tragedy. The title should not be read as a literal explanation of the president’s cause of death.

The historical timeline

Date Event
July 2, 1881 Charles J. Guiteau shoots President James A. Garfield at Baltimore and Potomac Railroad Station in Washington, D.C.
July–September 1881 Garfield initially survives but suffers a prolonged illness while doctors attempt to treat the wound.
September 19, 1881 Garfield dies, ending a presidency that had only just begun.
September 1881 Vice President Chester A. Arthur assumes the presidency.
June 30, 1882 Guiteau is found guilty and executed.

James A. Garfield: the president history nearly forgot

One of the series’ main purposes is to recover Garfield from the shadow of his assassination. He is often remembered primarily as the president who was shot, but the historical Garfield had already built an impressive career before reaching the White House.

His rise—from poverty to congressman and then president—helps explain why his story carries such a strong sense of unrealized potential. Garfield’s term was so short that his abilities, policies, and ambitions are easily eclipsed by the circumstances of his death. Death by Lightning treats that lost future as one of its central subjects: what could Garfield have accomplished if violence had not removed him from office?

The question is necessarily speculative. The series can dramatize Garfield’s leadership and private life, but no viewer can know exactly how his administration would have developed. That uncertainty is not a flaw in the story; it is the historical wound at its center.

Charles Guiteau and the politics behind the shooting

Guiteau is presented as a deluded political office seeker whose admiration for Garfield turns into grievance and obsession. He believed that political service entitled him to a government appointment, and his disappointment became part of the logic he used to justify the attack.

It would nevertheless be too simple to describe the assassination as the result of one rejected job application. The Republican Party of the period was divided by factionalism and by the patronage system, in which political connections could determine access to government positions. The conflict between the Stalwart faction and reform-minded Republicans forms an essential political backdrop.

Figures such as Roscoe Conkling and James Blaine represent the larger struggle over party power, appointments, and civil-service reform. Garfield’s nomination itself emerged from this contested political environment. The machinery of nineteenth-century party politics does not merely provide scenery for the drama; it helps explain the pressures surrounding Garfield and the world in which Guiteau imagined himself politically significant.

The National Park Service’s historical interpretation also cautions against reducing Guiteau to a simple disappointed applicant. His actions were his own, but they took place within a political culture where patronage, party loyalty, and access to office were unusually powerful.

Lucretia Garfield’s role

Lucretia “Crete” Garfield, James Garfield’s wife, is an important emotional and historical presence in the series. As first lady, she occupies a position close to the presidency during the shooting and its aftermath. Her perspective also broadens the story beyond the assassin and the political establishment.

Her importance continues after Garfield’s death. Lucretia helped preserve his memory and later developed the Garfield home and memorial library. That legacy work is part of why Garfield’s life can still be understood as more than a brief presidential footnote. The story of Death by Lightning does not end with the gunshot or even with Garfield’s death; it also concerns who controls the memory of a damaged political legacy.

The medical tragedy after the shooting

The series’ medical dimension is one of its defining features. Garfield survived the initial attack, but his condition deteriorated over the following weeks. In 1881, doctors lacked many tools and forms of medical knowledge that would later become standard. Treatment decisions were made under pressure, with incomplete information and limited ability to locate or safely remove the bullet.

This does not turn the story into a simple claim that one person or one procedure alone caused Garfield’s death. The historical record is more complicated. The important point is that the assassination became a long medical crisis rather than an instantaneous killing. The bullet, the president’s illness, medical assumptions, and the political consequences of his condition are inseparable parts of the historical narrative.

How accurate is the series?

The basic historical spine is firmly established:

  • Garfield became the 20th president of the United States.
  • Guiteau shot him at Baltimore and Potomac Railroad Station on July 2, 1881.
  • Garfield survived the shooting for more than two months and died on September 19.
  • Chester A. Arthur succeeded him as president.
  • Guiteau was convicted and executed on June 30, 1882.

As a drama, however, Death by Lightning necessarily reconstructs private conversations and personal encounters. Dialogue, interior motives, and some meetings may be dramatized rather than directly documented. Netflix presents the production as a drama, and its explanatory material distinguishes historical events from scenes created for the adaptation.

A useful way to watch is to separate the documented chronology from the interpretation. The assassination, Garfield’s illness, the political factions, and Guiteau’s trial belong to the historical record. The exact words spoken in private, the timing of certain encounters, and the emotional presentation of individuals are elements of dramatic storytelling.

The book behind Death by Lightning

Viewers who want the nonfiction history should start with Candice Millard’s Destiny of the Republic. It is the source identified for the series, not a novelization or an official episode companion. Millard’s book examines Garfield’s rise, Guiteau’s attack, the political conflict surrounding the administration, the president’s medical treatment, and the legacy left after his death.

A related historical site

For readers interested in Garfield beyond the screen, the James A. Garfield National Historic Site in Mentor, Ohio, preserves and interprets his home, life, presidency, and legacy. The property is associated with Garfield’s famous front-porch campaign and with Lucretia Garfield’s work to preserve his memory and develop a memorial library.

The site offers a useful counterpoint to the assassination narrative because it presents Garfield as a politician, husband, family man, and public figure rather than only as a victim. Check the National Park Service for current opening information and visitor details before planning a trip.

Is Death by Lightning worth watching?

Yes—especially for viewers drawn to presidential history, political patronage, assassination stories, and the history of medicine. Its strongest subject is not simply who shot Garfield, but how an unstable political culture, a disappointed office seeker, a vulnerable new administration, and nineteenth-century medical limitations combined to produce a national catastrophe.

The series is also most compelling when it resists treating Garfield as a footnote. The central tragedy is that the country never got to see the full presidency he might have had. That makes the title’s lightning image effective: the destruction is sudden in political terms, even though Garfield’s physical decline and the country’s uncertainty continue for months afterward.
