Andra Day’s Super Bowl 2024 performance
Andra Day performed “Lift Every Voice and Sing” during the pregame ceremony for Super Bowl LVIII on February 11, 2024, at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas. The song is often called the “Black National Anthem,” although it is not the legally designated national anthem of the United States. Day performed before kickoff, alongside ASL performer Shaheem Sanchez.
The NFL announced Day’s participation on January 18, 2024, as part of a pregame lineup that also included Reba McEntire singing “The Star-Spangled Banner” and Post Malone performing “America the Beautiful.” The performance was later made available through the NFL’s official video channels.
What song did Andra Day sing at the 2024 Super Bowl?
Day sang “Lift Every Voice and Sing,” not her better-known song “Rise Up.” That distinction matters because Day is closely associated with “Rise Up,” but the Super Bowl LVIII appearance was a performance of the historic hymn written by James Weldon Johnson and composed by his brother, John Rosamond Johnson.
The performance took place in the Super Bowl pregame ceremony, before the game began. It was not a halftime performance. Shaheem Sanchez provided American Sign Language interpretation alongside Day, according to the NFL’s official performance video.

Why “Lift Every Voice and Sing” is called the Black National Anthem
James Weldon Johnson wrote “Lift Every Voice and Sing” as a poem in 1900. His brother John Rosamond Johnson later composed the music. According to the NAACP, a choir of 500 children first performed the song publicly at the segregated Stanton School in Jacksonville, Florida, during a celebration of Abraham Lincoln’s birthday.
The song’s importance comes from the way it brings together several themes: the pain of historical oppression, religious faith, perseverance, hope, and the pursuit of freedom. It spread through Black communities and became closely associated with the Civil Rights Movement. The NAACP therefore commonly refers to it as the Black National Anthem.
That nickname is cultural and historical rather than a formal change to the United States national anthem. A precise description is that “Lift Every Voice and Sing” is commonly known as, or often called, the Black National Anthem.

From a 1900 poem to a Super Bowl tradition
The song’s appearance at Super Bowl LVIII was part of a relatively recent pregame practice. It was added to the Super Bowl pre-show in 2021, rather than being a feature that had been part of the event throughout its history.

Andra Day’s music beyond the Super Bowl
If you want to hear more of Andra Day after the Super Bowl performance, her debut album Cheers to the Fall is a logical place to start. Apple Music identifies the album as a 2015 R&B/soul release, while Warner Music’s discography documents a CD edition and Amazon’s artist catalog has displayed physical vinyl availability.
Cheers to the Fall is a related listening recommendation, not a soundtrack or recording of Day’s Super Bowl rendition of “Lift Every Voice and Sing.” Physical formats, sellers, prices, and availability can change, so check the specific edition before buying.
The song’s place in American music history
The Super Bowl performance brought a 124-year-old song to one of the largest television audiences in the United States. Its history is not limited to the stadium or the broadcast: the song began in a Jacksonville school, circulated as a hymn and community song, and became a powerful expression during the Civil Rights era.

The Library of Congress catalogs a 1921 edition for high voice and piano by James Weldon Johnson and J. Rosamond Johnson. The catalog identifies it under the heading “National Negro hymn” and provides access to digitized images and a PDF of the score. That archival record helps show how the song moved from a poem and public school performance into published musical repertoire.

Day’s 2024 rendition should therefore be understood in two contexts at once: it was a carefully staged Super Bowl pregame performance, and it was another public performance of a song whose meaning was shaped over more than a century.
