Jodie Foster has two children: sons Charles “Charlie” Bernard Foster, born in 1998, and Christopher “Kit” Bernard Foster, born in 2001. Foster raised them with her longtime former partner, producer Cydney Bernard. The brothers have largely stayed out of the spotlight, but the public record shows two notably different interests: Charlie has pursued theater and acting, while Kit studied chemistry at Princeton.
Who are Jodie Foster’s children?
| Name | Birth information | Publicly documented interests |
|---|---|---|
| Charles “Charlie” Bernard Foster | Born July 20, 1998 | Acting, improvisation and theater |
| Christopher “Kit” Bernard Foster | Born in 2001; an exact birth date is not established in the strongest available sources | Chemistry and organic-chemistry research |
ABC News identifies Charlie’s full name and birth date and describes Foster as the mother of two sons. Public biographical reporting and a CNN transcript identify Kit as Christopher “Kit” Bernard Foster and place his birth in 2001. ABC News’ family report and CNN’s interview transcript are among the sources for those details.
Charlie Foster
Charlie is Foster’s older son. The Yale College Arts biography page describes him as a theater enthusiast, and Yale production records identify him in student theater work, including a production of Pippin. Those records support describing theater as a significant part of his public profile, but they do not establish a long-term professional career.

Foster has also spoken about Charlie’s interest in performance. In comments reported by the Golden Globes’ archive, she said in 2015 that her older son liked acting and improvisation, while acknowledging that she did not know whether he would ultimately make acting his profession. The Golden Globes archive provides that account.
In 2025, BroadwayWorld reported that Charlie B. Foster was cast in Girls Will Be Girls, a world-premiere play scheduled for an Off-Broadway run at The Alice Griffin Jewel Box Theatre at The Pershing Square Signature Center in New York. Because that information comes from a trade-style casting report rather than a complete official production archive, the careful description is that he was reported as part of the cast. It would be inaccurate to label him an established Broadway actor on the basis of that report. BroadwayWorld’s casting report contains the announcement.
Kit Foster
Kit is Foster’s younger son and has a more private public profile. Foster referred to him as her “scientist son” at the 2025 Golden Globes, contrasting him with Charlie, whom she called her “actor son.” That shorthand reflects their publicly reported interests; it does not by itself establish Kit’s current job, employer or professional title. ABC News’ account of Foster’s remarks documents the description.
Rank #2
Kit’s strongest public academic record comes from Princeton University’s Department of Chemistry. A 2024 Princeton article identified him as a member of the Class of 2024 and discussed his senior thesis, Advancements in Nitrogen Deletion Enabled Squalene Synthesis, conducted under the supervision of adviser Erik Sorensen.
In that article, Kit discussed developing “chemical intuition” and eventually immersing himself in drug-discovery chemistry. Princeton’s wording supports describing him as a chemistry graduate with substantial research experience and a strong academic record. It does not confirm that he is currently a practicing scientist, pharmaceutical researcher, graduate student or employee of a particular organization.
Princeton’s 2024 chemistry awards announcement lists Kit H. Bernard Foster among the students receiving high honors. It also identifies him as an inductee into Sigma Xi and as the recipient of the American Chemical Society Division of Organic Chemistry Award. The relevant Princeton senior-thesis article and Princeton chemistry awards announcement are the most reliable sources for his academic accomplishments.

Who raised Jodie Foster’s sons?
Foster parented Charlie and Kit with Cydney Bernard, a producer and her longtime former partner. Foster publicly thanked Bernard as her “heroic co-parent” during her 2013 Cecil B. DeMille Award acceptance speech and referred to Charlie and Kit as her “amazing sons.” The ABC News transcript of the speech records those remarks.
Foster later married photographer and filmmaker Alexandra Hedison. In a 2024 interview with The Guardian, she discussed raising her two sons and said they were in their twenties at the time. The interview confirms the family structure described above, but it does not provide a comprehensive account of the sons’ private lives. Read the Guardian interview.

They have made occasional public appearances with their mother. Both sons attended the 2012 Golden Globes with Foster, which the Golden Globes’ archive described as their first appearance at the ceremony. Foster also spoke about them during her 2013 Golden Globes speech, although she has generally kept family details private. The Golden Globes archive’s ceremony coverage documents their 2012 appearance.
What is known—and not known—about Foster’s children?
The reliable public record is relatively limited, by design. It supports the following summary:
- Charlie is Foster’s older son, born in 1998, with documented interests and activities in acting and theater.
- Kit is her younger son, born in 2001, and completed a chemistry degree at Princeton in 2024.
- Kit received high honors, was inducted into Sigma Xi and received the American Chemical Society Division of Organic Chemistry Award.
- Foster raised both sons with Cydney Bernard and has spoken warmly about Bernard’s role as a co-parent.
- The brothers have maintained a level of privacy that makes detailed claims about their current personal or professional lives difficult to verify.
There is no strong basis in the reviewed sources for stating where either son currently lives, whether Kit entered graduate school, who employs him, or what Charlie’s long-term acting plans may be. The available sources also do not establish claims about biological parentage, private relationships, salaries or day-to-day activities. Those details should not be treated as fact merely because they appear on celebrity-aggregation websites.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Charlie and Kit’s different paths
Foster has summarized the contrast herself: Charlie is associated publicly with acting, improvisation and theater, while Kit is associated with chemistry and scientific research. Charlie’s Yale theater work and reported Girls Will Be Girls casting point toward performance. Kit’s Princeton thesis and academic awards point toward advanced chemistry study. Neither description should be expanded into a claim about a settled lifelong career without newer, authoritative evidence.
