According to a death certificate cited by contemporary reporting, the immediate cause was cardiac arrest stemming from breast and bone cancer. Locke’s death was widely described through the lens of her relationship with Eastwood, but her career began years before that partnership—with an acclaimed film debut—and included acting, directing, television work and a memoir that presented her own account of Hollywood and her legal battles.
An Oscar-nominated debut in The Heart Is a Lonely Hunter
Born Sondra Louise Anderson in Shelbyville, Tennessee, on May 28, 1944, Locke made her film debut as Mick Kelly in The Heart Is a Lonely Hunter (1968), an adaptation of Carson McCullers’s novel.

Her performance earned an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress. The nomination established Locke as a serious young performer before she became associated with Eastwood or the action and comedy films that later defined much of her public profile.
Her early and mid-career film credits included Cover Me Babe (1970), Willard (1971), A Reflection of Fear (1973) and The Second Coming of Suzanne (1974). She also appeared in television series and films including Amazing Stories, Joe Forrester, Cannon, Night Gallery and Friendships, Secrets and Lies.
Six films with Clint Eastwood
Locke met Eastwood professionally on The Outlaw Josey Wales (1976), in which she played Laura Lee. The two became romantic partners after working on the film, and their professional collaboration continued for six more projects in total.
Locke and Eastwood appeared together in:
- The Outlaw Josey Wales (1976)
- The Gauntlet (1977)
- Every Which Way but Loose (1978)
- Any Which Way You Can (1980)
- Bronco Billy (1980)
- Sudden Impact (1983)
The films covered several genres. The Outlaw Josey Wales was a Western, The Gauntlet an action thriller, and the Every Which Way but Loose films combined action with comedy. In Bronco Billy, Locke played a woman who becomes involved with Eastwood’s struggling showman. She played a different kind of role in Sudden Impact, the fourth film in the Dirty Harry series, which Eastwood directed.
The relationship lasted approximately 13 years and ended in 1989. Locke was not Eastwood’s wife. She married actor and sculptor Gordon Anderson in 1967, and the Guardian reported that they remained legally married at the time of her death.

Locke’s work as a director
Locke also pursued directing, a part of her career that is often overshadowed by her association with Eastwood. The AFI Catalog credits her as director of Ratboy (1986), a dark fantasy film about a young man with rat-like features whose life becomes a public spectacle.
Obituary coverage also identified later directing projects including Impulse, Death in Small Doses and Trading Favors. These projects reflected Locke’s effort to work behind the camera as well as in front of it.
The breakup and lawsuits
After her relationship with Eastwood ended, Locke sued him for palimony. The case became part of a much larger and highly publicized dispute over their personal and professional relationship.

Locke later filed a fraud lawsuit involving a production arrangement with Warner Bros. She alleged that the arrangement had been used to induce her to abandon or settle earlier litigation. The case was settled in 1996 during jury deliberations, according to contemporary obituary reports; the terms were not disclosed.

Those events should be understood with care. Locke’s memoir and interviews provide her account of the relationship, the breakup and the lawsuits, while news reports document the existence and broad chronology of the litigation. Allegations described in Locke’s account should not be treated as independently proven simply because they appear in her memoir.
Her memoir: The Good, the Bad, and the Very Ugly
Locke published The Good, the Bad, and the Very Ugly: A Hollywood Journey in 1997 through William Morrow. The book discusses the two men she described as most influential in her life—Eastwood and Gordon Anderson—as well as her acting career, cancer treatment and lawsuits.
Readers interested in Locke’s own account can look for The Good, the Bad, and the Very Ugly: A Hollywood Journey, the documented physical book authored by Locke. It is best read as a primary source for her perspective and self-presentation, not as independent verification of every allegation involving Eastwood, Warner Bros. or other people named in the narrative.

Locke’s legacy has two overlapping stories. One is the highly visible Hollywood partnership with Eastwood, which produced six films and made her familiar to a broad movie audience. The other begins with her Academy Award-nominated debut and continues through her work in independent films, television, directing and memoir.
Remembering Locke only as Eastwood’s former girlfriend misses the professional arc that preceded and outlasted the relationship. She was an actress recognized by the Academy at the beginning of her career, a director who continued to seek creative control, and an author who recorded a contested but important personal account of her years in Hollywood.
