The phrase “wasn’t a drag queen” came from Ana Navarro during the July 15, 2024 episode of The View, which discussed the attempted assassination of Donald Trump at a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania. Navarro was not identifying the shooter’s motive. She was making a political argument about the groups she believed are often blamed for violence in conservative rhetoric.
The panel’s broader response was more extensive than the headline suggests. The hosts condemned political violence, expressed relief that Trump survived, discussed the country’s escalating political language and social-media environment, and debated whether the shooting would lead to any meaningful response on guns or political rhetoric.
What happened before the segment aired?
On July 13, 2024, a gunman opened fire from a rooftop at a campaign rally near Butler, Pennsylvania. Trump was injured, one spectator was killed, and other spectators were wounded.

In a July 15 update, the FBI described the incident as an attempted assassination and said it was also investigating whether it constituted an act of domestic terrorism. Investigators said at that stage that the shooter appeared to have acted alone, but that no motive had been established. The FBI also said the firearm used in the shooting had been purchased legally.
Those facts are important when interpreting the television discussion. The July 15 broadcast was a live or near-live political reaction to an investigation that was still in its early stages. The hosts were debating political meaning and public policy; they were not presenting a completed explanation of why the attack occurred.
What did Ana Navarro mean by “wasn’t a drag queen”?
Navarro said she was relieved that Trump was safe and condemned political violence. She then argued that people should reject violence consistently, rather than objecting only when someone from their own political side is attacked.
As part of that argument, she contrasted the actual suspect with several groups she said are frequently portrayed as threats in conservative political messaging. Her wording included the line:
“It wasn’t a drag queen, it wasn’t an immigrant, it wasn’t a pissed off liberal woman.”
The line was Navarro’s political framing. It was not a law-enforcement finding about the suspect’s motive, and it was not the consensus wording of every host on the panel. At the time of the broadcast, the FBI had not announced a motive. Later FBI remarks in August 2024 likewise said investigators had not identified a definitive motive or credible evidence of co-conspirators.
In other words, Navarro was challenging what she saw as a double standard in political rhetoric: certain minorities, immigrants or ideological opponents can be treated as presumed sources of danger, while violence connected to a white male gunman is discussed differently. Whether a viewer agrees with that argument is separate from the factual question of what investigators knew. The broadcast did not establish that the suspect belonged to a particular political movement or acted for a confirmed ideological reason.
How did the other hosts respond?
Alyssa Farah Griffin: condemn violence without abandoning criticism
Griffin, a former Trump communications aide who later became a public critic of him, began by expressing gratitude that Trump was alive. She said Americans still have the right to criticize a politician’s policies and character, but warned that political language can become dangerous when the most inflammatory statements are rewarded.

She also discussed the role of social-media information warfare. In her view, online political ecosystems can repeatedly validate people’s fears and anger, making the country’s divisions worse. Her point was not that criticism itself should stop; it was that criticism and political disagreement should not be turned into escalating dehumanization or incitement.
Ana Navarro: political violence must be condemned consistently
Navarro connected the attack to her memories of political instability and to the January 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol. Her central point was that condemnation should not depend on whether the victim is politically sympathetic to the person condemning the violence.
Her comments about drag queens, immigrants and liberal women belonged to that larger argument. They were an accusation of inconsistency in political narratives, not a claim that the suspect’s identity alone explained the shooting.
Joy Behar: questions about ammunition and intervention
Behar questioned whether reports that the suspect had purchased approximately 50 rounds of ammunition should have triggered a report or intervention.

The FBI’s initial public update said the firearm had been purchased legally; it did not establish that the ammunition purchase itself should have been reported to authorities.
The distinction matters because ammunition purchases are governed by different rules from firearms, and whether a transaction should prompt intervention depends on the relevant law, the circumstances and the information available to the seller or authorities. Behar’s comment should therefore be read as a policy question rather than as a conclusion about negligence.
Sara Haines: hope that the attack would change Trump
Haines said she hoped surviving a near-death experience would become a lasting wake-up call for Trump and influence the way he addressed the public.
She also acknowledged that this was uncertain. People sometimes reassess their behavior after a serious illness or near-death experience, but there was no evidence during the broadcast that Trump had changed his political approach. Haines was expressing hope and speculation, not reporting a confirmed transformation.

Sunny Hostin: skepticism about a gun-policy response
Hostin expressed doubt that the shooting would lead to substantial gun-control action. She predicted that some conservatives would instead argue that the attack could have been stopped if more armed people had been present—the familiar “good guys with guns” argument—while the political response might remain limited to expressions of sympathy and prayer.
That was Hostin’s political forecast, not a description of an enacted policy. The segment aired before any later legislative or administrative response could be assessed, and the comment should not be presented as proof of what all conservatives believed or what policymakers ultimately did.
What did investigators know at the time?
The July 15 FBI update emphasized that the investigation was still developing. It said:
- the event was being investigated as an attempted assassination;
- the possibility of domestic terrorism was also being examined;
- the shooter appeared to have acted alone based on information available at that point;
- no motive had been identified; and
- the firearm had been purchased legally.
The Justice Department said the FBI, Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Western District of Pennsylvania, Justice Department National Security Division, Secret Service and state and local authorities were working on the case. Attorney General Merrick Garland called the violence an attack on democracy and said the department would commit available resources to the investigation.
What was learned later?
In August 2024, the FBI provided a more developed account of the investigation. Agents said they had analyzed extensive online activity, found no credible evidence of co-conspirators and still had not established a definitive motive. Investigators also said the shooter fired eight rounds from the roof of the AGR complex at approximately 6:11 p.m.
Those later findings add context, but they should not be projected backward into the July 15 discussion. When The View aired, the hosts were reacting to an attack only two days old. Their comments reflected immediate political analysis, personal reaction and speculation about consequences—not the final conclusions of a completed investigation.

“Wasn’t a drag queen” is a selective but accurate excerpt of Navarro’s remarks. It captures one of the segment’s most confrontational lines, but it can give the impression that the entire panel was making a single claim about the shooting. That is not what happened.
The full discussion included several overlapping points:

- the attack was wrong and political violence should be condemned;
- Trump’s survival was a relief, even for people who opposed his politics;
- politicians and commentators should be cautious about escalating rhetoric;
- social-media systems can intensify fear and hostility;
- gun access and possible intervention deserved scrutiny; and
- the attack might not produce meaningful changes in gun policy or political behavior.
Navarro’s phrase was therefore part of an argument about political double standards, not a verified explanation of the attack. The responsible factual description remains that the FBI investigated the Butler rally shooting as an attempted assassination, had not identified a motive at the time of the broadcast, and later still had not announced a definitive motive.
The key takeaway
The July 15 episode of The View combined grief, relief, condemnation and partisan disagreement. Navarro’s “wasn’t a drag queen” line referred to the way she believed conservative rhetoric assigns blame to particular groups. It did not establish why the suspect attacked the rally, and it should not be treated as a law-enforcement conclusion.
The most accurate reading of the segment is broader: the hosts agreed that political violence was unacceptable, while disagreeing about how rhetoric, guns and partisan narratives contributed to the country’s increasingly hostile political environment.
