Best Places to Download Free Music Legally in 2026

The safest places to download free music in 2026—and how to tell whether a track is actually licensed for your documentary, podcast, video, or commercial project.

Short answer: Start with Free Music Archive for broad independent-music searches, Jamendo Music for Creative Commons discoveries, Musopen for classical recordings, and ccMixter or dig.ccMixter for samples, stems, remixes, and creator projects. SoundCloud and Bandcamp are useful when an artist has enabled an official download or released a track at zero price. The Internet Archive is valuable for selected archival collections, but its rights information must be checked item by item.

The important distinction is that free to download does not automatically mean free to use in a documentary, podcast, monetized video, advertisement, or other published project. A safe download has both an official download mechanism and clear permission for your intended use.

What makes a music download legal?

A page having an MP3 button is not, by itself, proof that you can legally use the recording. The safest approach is permission-based:

  1. Use the service’s own download control rather than a ripping or conversion tool.
  2. Identify the artist, uploader, label, or rights holder.
  3. Open the individual track or item’s license and terms.
  4. Confirm that the license covers your actual use: personal listening, documentary video, podcast, remix, commercial work, or something else.
  5. Save the license information and attribution requirements with the downloaded file.

This matters because a recording can be legally offered for personal listening while still being unsuitable for a monetized film. It is also possible for a public-domain composition to have a separate copyright-protected recording. Treat every track as its own rights decision.

This guide uses “best” as an editorial category rather than a universal ranking. Catalogs, prices, download controls, account requirements, and licenses can change by country, artist, release, and date. The services and policies below were checked against the supplied research on August 12, 2026 UTC; recheck the live track page before publishing a project.

Quick comparison

Source Strongest use What you can download Main licensing caution
Free Music Archive Independent music, background tracks, podcasts, and videos Downloads are available across the catalog, with search filters for public-domain, commercial-use, and remix or video use cases The catalog uses several licensing arrangements. Read the license on each track page.
Jamendo Music Discovering independent Creative Commons music Free streaming and downloading in the Jamendo catalog Attribution, NonCommercial, NoDerivatives, and ShareAlike conditions vary by track. Jamendo Music is separate from paid Jamendo Licensing.
Musopen Classical music, study, education, and public-domain resources Selected royalty-free and public-domain recordings can be listened to and downloaded free Check the rights attached to the particular recording, not just the composition.
ccMixter and dig.ccMixter Samples, stems, remixes, podcasts, games, and video soundtracks Music and remix materials offered under track-specific Creative Commons terms Commercial use, attribution, and derivative-work permissions differ between tracks.
SoundCloud Artist-authorized downloads of individual tracks An individual track only when its uploader has enabled the official download-file button on the web A download button does not grant broader reuse rights. Playlists and the mobile workflow are not supported for this download feature.
Bandcamp Supporting independent artists and obtaining DRM-free releases Free items and no-minimum name-your-price releases when the artist or label permits a zero-price download DRM-free describes the file, not your copyright rights. Do not redistribute or reuse commercially without permission.
Internet Archive Historical audio, live recordings, and public-domain collections Downloads depend on the individual collection or item Licensing is mixed. Inspect the item-level rights statement and uploader information.

1. Free Music Archive: the best general starting point for creators

Free Music Archive is one of the most useful first stops when you need independent music for research, listening, a documentary soundtrack, a podcast, or a video project. Its current catalog is described as free to play, download, and share, and its search tools expose filters for public-domain music, commercial use, and remix or video use cases.

Those filters are useful for narrowing the search, but they do not replace reading the track page. Free Music Archive includes Creative Commons licenses as well as other arrangements, including a download-only license. The archive is therefore not one uniformly reusable catalog.

How to use it safely

  1. Search by mood, genre, artist, or use case.
  2. Apply a commercial-use or video-use filter if your project needs those rights.
  3. Open the individual track page and identify the exact license.
  4. Check whether attribution is required and whether NonCommercial or NoDerivatives restrictions apply.
  5. Save the track page, license name, artist name, and attribution wording before downloading.

Best fit: documentary makers who want a broad independent-music catalog and a way to filter toward particular production needs.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Watch out: a track labeled free download may be suitable only for listening. A commercially reusable track may still require credit, and a track suitable for a video may not permit editing or other adaptations.

2. Jamendo Music: a large Creative Commons discovery catalog

Jamendo Music is a strong choice for finding independent artists and Creative Commons releases. Jamendo’s official developer documentation describes free streaming and downloading of more than 350,000 songs in its Jamendo catalog, although catalog size and availability can change.

Creative Commons is not one single permission. Depending on the track, the license may require attribution, prohibit commercial use, prohibit derivative works, or require an adapted version to carry the same or a compatible license. Read the specific license shown for the release.

Do not confuse Jamendo Music with Jamendo Licensing

Jamendo Music is the discovery and listening service. Jamendo Licensing project license is the separate route for project-specific rights for online videos, podcasts, social content, commercial work, and similar uses. It is not necessarily free of charge. In this context, “royalty-free” means that the applicable license does not require recurring royalties after the relevant terms are met; it does not mean that the license costs nothing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Best fit: personal listening and carefully documented creator projects where the track’s Creative Commons conditions clearly match the intended use.

Watch out: do not assume that every Jamendo download can be used in a monetized documentary. A NonCommercial restriction can rule out paid client work, advertising, monetized channels, and other commercial activity.

3. Musopen: classical recordings and music education

Musopen is a nonprofit resource focused on classical music, sheet music, recordings, and music education. Its site lets users browse royalty-free recordings, listen online, download free material, and find public-domain resources.

It is particularly useful when a documentary needs classical repertoire, a student needs practice material, or an educational project needs a historically significant work. But verify the status of the particular recording before publishing it.

Composition versus recording

These are separate rights objects:

  • The composition is the underlying work: the notes, melody, harmony, and arrangement.
  • The sound recording is a particular performance captured in audio.

A centuries-old composition may be public domain while a modern orchestra’s recording of it remains protected. A public-domain label for the composition does not automatically clear the recording. Save the recording’s own license or rights statement and follow any attribution instructions.

Best fit: classical listening, education, historical documentaries, and projects that can verify the recording rights separately from the underlying composition.

4. ccMixter and dig.ccMixter: best for samples, stems, and remixes

ccMixter is designed around Creative Commons music that creators can download, sample, combine, and remix when the individual license permits it. It is especially useful when a finished song is not enough and you need stems, loops, samples, or material to build into a soundtrack.

dig.ccMixter presents music for videos, apps, games, podcasts, school projects, and personal music players. Some tracks are identified as available for commercial projects at no charge, but that status still needs to be checked for the specific track and its license.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Before using a ccMixter track

  • Check whether the license permits commercial use.
  • Confirm whether attribution is required and where it must appear.
  • Check whether the license permits derivative works, including edits, remixes, sampling, and synchronization with moving images.
  • Look for ShareAlike requirements if you are distributing an adapted work.
  • Keep a record of the source track and the license that applied when you downloaded it.

Best fit: documentary editors, video makers, podcasters, game developers, and musicians looking for remixable source material.

Watch out: a track that works for a personal experiment may not work for a monetized documentary. NonCommercial and NoDerivatives restrictions are especially important here.

5. SoundCloud: download only when the artist enables it

SoundCloud is not a universal free-download library. Its official help guidance says that a listener can download an individual track on the web when the uploader has enabled the download file button. Not every track has this option. Playlists cannot be downloaded as a whole, and the same download workflow is not supported on mobile devices.

The official button is the legitimate way to obtain the file through SoundCloud. Do not use a third-party SoundCloud downloader to bypass a disabled button. More importantly, an enabled download does not automatically grant permission to place the track in a documentary, remix it, upload it elsewhere, or monetize it. Check the uploader’s stated license and ask the artist when the terms are unclear.

Best fit: finding individual, artist-authorized downloads from musicians who clearly state how the files may be used.

Watch out: “downloadable” and “licensed for reuse” are different claims. Treat the former as permission to obtain the file, not as a blanket synchronization or commercial-use license.

6. Bandcamp: free and zero-price releases from artists

Bandcamp gives artists and labels control over whether a release is paid, free, or offered as a no-minimum name-your-price item. When the artist permits a zero-price download, a fan can enter zero and obtain the release. Bandcamp also states that downloaded files are DRM-free.

This is a good option when you want to support an independent artist and keep a local copy for offline listening. However, DRM-free means the file is not locked by digital-rights-management software; it does not give you the right to redistribute it, upload it to another service, use it in a film, or exploit it commercially.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Best fit: personal listening and artist-supported downloads where the release is offered free or at zero price.

Watch out: read the artist’s release terms and contact the artist or label if you want synchronization, commercial, broadcast, or client-project rights. Do not mistake a zero-price release for a public-domain work.

7. Internet Archive: useful, but only collection by collection

The Internet Archive contains valuable music-related material, including authorized live recordings, historical audio, public-domain works, radio, and other archival collections. It is best treated as a research repository with mixed rights information, not as a blanket guarantee that every uploaded music file is legal to reuse.

  • The item-level rights statement or license.
  • The uploader or collection owner.
  • Any restrictions on commercial use, redistribution, editing, or public performance.
  • The download terms and the identity of the particular recording.

Best fit: archival documentaries, historical projects, live-music research, and public-domain material where the item’s rights information is unusually clear.

Watch out: the existence of an upload does not prove that the uploader had authority to make it available. Mixed licensing makes item-level verification essential.

Free to download is not the same as free to use

Use this distinction when evaluating any source:

Label or situation What it may allow What it does not automatically allow
Free download Obtaining a file through the site’s permitted download mechanism Reuploading, redistributing, remixing, synchronization, or commercial use
Personal use Listening privately or keeping an offline copy where the terms permit it Using the music in a public documentary, client job, advertisement, or monetized channel
Attribution required Use under the license after giving the required credit and license link Ignoring the credit requirement or changing the license conditions
Commercial use permitted Commercial projects within the stated license scope Assuming every form of commercial distribution, broadcast, advertising, or resale is covered
NonCommercial Qualifying noncommercial use under the license Monetized videos, paid client work, advertising, commercial podcasts, or business promotion
NoDerivatives Only the uses allowed without making an adapted work Remixing, editing, synchronizing, or otherwise adapting the track when prohibited
ShareAlike Adaptation when the resulting work follows the required same or compatible licensing terms Releasing an adaptation under incompatible restrictions
Royalty-free Not paying recurring royalties under the applicable license Assuming the track is free of charge or unrestricted

Creative Commons labels are helpful shorthand, but the full license and the track page control. Attribution commonly means naming the artist, naming the work, identifying the source, and linking to the exact license when required. Do not invent a credit format: follow the artist’s or service’s instructions.

A safe workflow for downloading music for a documentary

1. Decide what the project actually is

Write down whether you need the music for private listening, a classroom exercise, a festival submission, a public documentary, a monetized video, a client commission, a podcast, a game, an advertisement, or a remix. “Video use” is not precise enough. A free track may be cleared for one of these uses and restricted for another.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

2. Download only through the official control

Use the Download, Download file, or equivalent control supplied by the service or uploader. Do not use stream-ripping websites, browser tools that bypass a disabled button, or video-to-MP3 converters for unauthorized uploads. An easy technical route does not create copyright permission.

3. Read the track-level terms

Look for the exact license, rights statement, or artist instructions on the individual release. Check the four most common Creative Commons conditions:

  • BY: attribution is required.
  • NC: commercial use is not allowed.
  • ND: derivative works are not allowed.
  • SA: adaptations may need the same or a compatible license.

Also look for restrictions that are not summarized by an icon, including platform limitations, synchronization conditions, territory, duration, or required contact with the rights holder.

4. Save a rights record

Create a folder beside the audio file containing the artist name, track title, source page, exact license name, license link, download date, and any required credit. A screenshot or saved copy of the terms can help document what you relied on, although it does not replace obtaining permission when the license is unclear.

A simple record can look like this:

Track: [title]
Artist: [name]
Source: [track page]
License: [exact license or rights statement]
Credit required: [yes/no and required wording]
Project use: [documentary, podcast, personal, commercial, etc.]
Downloaded: [date]

5. Build the credit before publication

Put the required credit in the documentary’s end titles, description, show notes, or another location specified by the license. Keep the credit readable and include the requested license link. If the license does not clearly permit your intended use, stop and obtain written permission or choose another track.

6. Audit the finished edit

Before release, check every music cue against your rights record. Make sure an edit has not created a prohibited derivative work, that a NonCommercial track has not entered a monetized or client project, and that all credits survived the final export.

Where free music is most likely to fail

  • Third-party downloaders: they may bypass an uploader’s decision not to offer a file and provide no reliable evidence of rights.
  • “Free MP3” pages with no artist or license: you cannot verify who authorized the copy or how it may be used.
  • Confusing streaming access with ownership: being able to play a track does not mean you can save, extract, or redistribute it.
  • Confusing a free price with free copyright: zero-price Bandcamp releases and free catalog downloads can still be protected works.
  • Assuming a whole catalog has one license: Free Music Archive, Jamendo, ccMixter, and the Internet Archive all require attention to the individual track or item.
  • Ignoring the recording: public-domain music can still be represented by a protected modern performance.
  • Using a NonCommercial track in a business project: monetization, client work, advertising, and paid distribution can create a mismatch.

Organizing a local music library

Keep the audio file and its rights record together rather than downloading tracks into one anonymous folder. A useful filename can include the artist and title, while a separate text file preserves the license and attribution details. Keep at least one additional copy of irreplaceable project assets. A USB flash drive for music files can provide a simple offline copy of a legally downloaded library, but storage is not a license and a single USB device is not a complete backup strategy.

When a paid license is the safer choice

Free Creative Commons music is not always the best production choice. If your documentary is commissioned, monetized, sponsored, advertised, distributed by a business, or likely to be broadcast, a project-specific license may be simpler than trying to interpret a restrictive free license. Paid licensing can also be appropriate when you need a specific term, territory, platform, synchronization right, or warranty from the licensor.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Jamendo Licensing is one example of a separate project-licensing route, but review its current terms, price, and scope directly. It should not be described as a free download source or assumed to cover every use.

Bottom line for documentary makers

Use Free Music Archive when you want broad search and license filters; Jamendo Music for independent Creative Commons discovery; Musopen for classical and educational material; ccMixter or dig.ccMixter for remixable creator assets; SoundCloud when the artist has enabled the official individual-track download; Bandcamp for free or zero-price artist releases; and the Internet Archive only when the specific collection has clear rights information.

The reliable test is not whether a site has an MP3 button. It is whether you can show who offered the recording, what license applies, whether that license covers your project, and how you will provide the required credit. If any of those answers is missing, choose another track or obtain permission.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is an MP3 or lossless file better for a documentary?

That is primarily a quality and storage decision, not a copyright decision. MP3 files are smaller and easier to store, while lossless formats preserve more audio data and may be preferable when the source offers them and your editing workflow supports them. Either format still requires the appropriate permission and attribution.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do I have to credit music downloaded under a Creative Commons license?

Often, yes, but it depends on the exact license. Attribution requirements can include the artist, track title, source, and a link to the license. Follow the instructions on the individual track page and keep the credit in the documentary’s end titles, description, or show notes as required.

Can I use free music in a monetized YouTube documentary or paid client project?

Only when the track’s license explicitly permits commercial use and covers the way you are using it. Avoid tracks marked NonCommercial. Also check attribution, derivative-work, synchronization, platform, and territory conditions. If the terms are unclear, obtain written permission or a project-specific license.

Can I download free music for offline listening?

Usually, offline listening is the least restrictive use when the source has authorized the download. Use the service’s official download control and follow its terms. Offline access does not normally grant permission to redistribute the file or use it in a published production.

Is using a stream-ripping site legal if I only keep the music for myself?

Do not treat stream-ripping as a safe legal-download method. It can bypass the uploader’s disabled download control and may violate service terms or copyright law, depending on the service, work, and jurisdiction. Use an official download or obtain permission instead.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

Choose the source according to the project: Free Music Archive and Jamendo are strong general starting points, Musopen is best for classical material, ccMixter is best for remixable assets, and SoundCloud or Bandcamp work when the artist has expressly enabled a download or free release. Verify every track’s rights, save the license, provide the required credit, and use a paid project license when free terms do not clearly cover the documentary.
