Kerdiles died on September 23, 2023, after his motorcycle collided with an SUV at the intersection of 14th Avenue North and Wheless Street. The Metropolitan Nashville Police Department said he was riding west on Wheless Street when he traveled through a stop sign and struck the driver’s side of a BMW SUV. He was taken to Vanderbilt University Medical Center, where he later died.

Reports published in November 2023 describing the medical examiner’s findings referred to injuries including broken bones, brain bruising and abrasions. Emergency responders transported Kerdiles to Vanderbilt University Medical Center. He died there after the collision. Police said at the time that no charges were anticipated.

The police account describes the preliminary crash sequence. The later medical-examiner reporting addressed the injuries and the manner of death. Those are related but separate findings: the accidental ruling does not mean every detail of the collision or any potential contributing factor was established by the death certificate alone.
What did toxicology show?
Later reporting on the autopsy stated that toxicology detected ethanol in Kerdiles’ bloodstream and estimated his blood-alcohol concentration at approximately 0.124. For drivers over 21, Tennessee’s legal limit is 0.08.
That toxicology result should be distinguished from the Nashville police department’s initial statement that officers observed no signs of impairment at the scene. The first statement reflected an assessment made during the immediate crash response; the BAC figure came from later toxicology reporting.

Available reporting does not establish that alcohol legally caused the crash. The supported conclusion is that alcohol was detected and that later reporting cited an estimated BAC of 0.124. He made his NHL debut for the Ducks on February 22, 2017. The team noted that he was the first player raised in Orange County to play for the franchise. Kerdiles appeared in three NHL games and recorded an assist during the 2017 Stanley Cup Playoffs.
