Dept. Q Season 2 is officially happening, and filming is underway in Edinburgh. Matthew Goode returns as DCI Carl Morck, while the new investigation will target a terrible crime hidden within the highest levels of Scottish society. Netflix has not yet announced a release date, episode count, trailer, or specific Department Q novel adaptation.
Netflix has renewed Dept. Q for Season 2, and production is underway in Edinburgh, Scotland. Matthew Goode will return as DCI Carl Morck, joined by the principal members of the Edinburgh cold-case team. The new season will investigate “a terrible crime hidden in the highest echelons of Scottish society,” according to Netflix.
However, Netflix has not announced a Season 2 premiere date, episode count, trailer, or confirmed adaptation of any particular Department Q novel. Here is everything officially known—and what remains unconfirmed—as of August 12, 2026.
Dept. Q Season 2 release date
There is no confirmed release date for Dept. Q Season 2. Netflix announced the renewal on June 25, 2026, and said that production was already underway in Edinburgh. Its accompanying cast information also confirms that filming is in progress, but neither source provides a month, season, or year for the premiere.

A March 2026 production report said filming was expected to run in Edinburgh from July through December 2026. That is useful background for the production timeline, but it is not a Netflix release announcement. It would be premature to describe a 2027 premiere—or a late-2026 launch—as confirmed.
The safest current answer is: Season 2 is in production, but Netflix has not announced when it will premiere. The season will stream on Netflix, like the first season, though availability and release timing can vary by territory.
What will Season 2 be about?
Netflix’s official Season 2 premise is deliberately broad. Carl Morck and his team will investigate a serious crime concealed within the highest levels of Scottish society. The case will bring the Department Q detectives into conflict with wealthy and powerful people who believe they are beyond the reach of the law.
The broader format of the show will remain familiar. Morck leads the unconventional Department Q from the basement of an Edinburgh police station, where the unit takes on cold cases that other investigators have been unable to solve. Netflix describes the series as a darkly humorous, fast-moving procedural that also examines the complicated personal lives of its detectives.

Netflix has not confirmed that Season 2 adapts The Absent One, Disgrace, or another specific novel by Jussi Adler-Olsen. Those books may be mentioned in speculation because the series is based on the Department Q novels, but no particular book should be treated as the confirmed Season 2 storyline.
Returning cast
The announced returning cast includes:
- Matthew Goode as DCI Carl Morck, the abrasive and highly capable head of Department Q.
- Alexej Manvelov as Akram Salim.
- Leah Byrne as Detective Constable Rose Dickson.
- Jamie Sives as Detective Chief Inspector James Hardy.
- Mark Bonnar as Stephen Burns.
- Kate Dickie as Detective Chief Superintendent Moira Jacobson.
- Aaron McVeigh as Jasper Stewart.
- Sanjeev Kohli as Martin Fleming.
Netflix’s initial renewal announcement singled out Goode, Manvelov, Byrne, and Sives. A later official cast guide expanded the list to include the other returning performers.
New Season 2 cast members
Netflix has also announced 10 new cast members and their roles:
- Aisling Franciosi as Kimmie
- Greg Wise as Derek Powell
- Nicholas Rowe as Thomas Fulton
- Tony Curran as Winnie Calderwood
- Hamish Clark as Christopher Herron
- Alex Ferns as Phil Allenbeck
- Ross Anderson as Ricky Daddario
- Rebecca Root as June Lovesay
- Isla Johnston as Agnes
- Amy Brenneman as Helen
The official cast guide does not yet explain how these characters connect to the investigation. Netflix has not identified which of the new performers play suspects, victims, investigators, or members of the wealthy Scottish circles targeted by Department Q. Any more specific character descriptions would currently be speculation.
Where Season 1 left Carl Morck and Department Q
Dept. Q follows Carl Morck after a traumatic police shooting that killed another officer and left his partner, James Hardy, paralyzed. Morck is assigned to lead a new cold-case unit in Edinburgh. The department serves partly as a public response to unsolved crimes and partly as a way to keep the difficult, volatile detective under supervision.

Season 1 introduced Morck and his group of misfit investigators as they revisited an Edinburgh cold case. The first season premiered on Netflix on May 29, 2025, and Netflix says it spent six weeks in the Global Top 10 shows list. That performance helped provide the context for the renewal, although it does not guarantee further seasons.
This article remains spoiler-light. Netflix’s Season 2 announcement confirms that the team moves on to a new case, but discussing the outcome of Season 1 would reveal more than is necessary to explain the second season.
Is Season 2 based on a Department Q book?
The television series is based on the Department Q crime novels by Danish author Jussi Adler-Olsen. The Netflix adaptation relocates the action to Scotland, so the books should be treated as source material rather than as a scene-by-scene blueprint for the show.

Netflix has not announced which, if any, Department Q novel provides the specific basis for Season 2. Viewers should therefore be cautious with articles claiming that the new season definitively adapts The Absent One, Disgrace, or another installment.

A companion read for fans
The best starting point for readers who want to explore the literary origins of the franchise is The Keeper of Lost Causes by Jussi Adler-Olsen. The author’s official site identifies it as the first book in the international Department Q series, and Penguin Random House lists it as part of the Department Q novel series.
It is a companion recommendation—not a confirmed Season 2 adaptation. The television version has changed the setting and may substantially rearrange characters, cases, and chronology. No specific edition, price, stock status, or retailer availability is being claimed here.
Will there be a Season 2 trailer?
Netflix has not announced a Season 2 trailer or teaser in the official materials covered by this report. Promotional footage will likely arrive closer to the premiere, but no release date for a trailer has been confirmed.
