Jensen Ackles’s character is not killed in Big Sky’s season-three finale. He helps rescue his daughter, Emily, after the kidnapping storyline reaches its conclusion, but his personal future is left unresolved. ABC later canceled Big Sky on May 12, 2023, meaning the episode that aired on January 18, 2023, now serves as the series finale.
Spoilers for all three seasons of Big Sky follow.
Why was Big Sky canceled?
ABC canceled Big Sky after three seasons when it decided not to include the crime thriller on its 2023–2024 schedule. The cancellation was announced on May 12, 2023, alongside the network’s decisions to cancel Alaska Daily and The Company You Keep.
The announcement came several months after the third-season finale had already aired. As a result, Big Sky was not given a specially written series finale. Its January 18, 2023, episode, “That Old Feeling,” became the show’s final canonical episode after the fact.
Reported ratings provide context, but not a confirmed official reason from ABC. TVLine reported that the third season averaged approximately 4.8 million total viewers and a 0.5 Live+7 rating among adults 18–49, down from season two. The report described Big Sky as one of ABC’s lower-ranked dramas that season. That makes declining performance the clearest reported explanation, but it would be too strong to claim that ABC publicly attributed the cancellation to any one factor.

What happened to Jensen Ackles’s character, Beau Arlen?
Beau Arlen is alive at the end of season 3. He also succeeds in finding his daughter, Emily, who has been caught up in the season’s kidnapping storyline.
During the finale, Beau confronts Buck Barnes and nearly kills him while trying to force information about Emily’s whereabouts. Jenny Hoyt intervenes before the confrontation goes further. Sunny Barnes then shoots Buck.
Cassie Dewell and Cormac Dewell eventually locate Emily and Denise at an old mine site. When Emily sees Beau, she runs to him, confirming that the sheriff survives the finale and that the immediate family crisis has been resolved.
Does Beau leave Montana?
The show never gives a definitive answer. Beau says that Carla and Emily are moving back to Houston, but he is uncertain about what he will do next. That leaves two obvious possibilities: he could return to Houston with his family, or he could remain in Montana and continue his life as sheriff.

The finale also leaves Beau and Jenny’s relationship deliberately open. Beau visits Jenny and thanks her for helping him. Their final exchange carries romantic potential, but the episode does not establish that they become a couple. It is a possibility, not a confirmed outcome.
In other words, Beau’s final status is:
- He survives the season-three finale.
- He rescues Emily.
- His family’s future is tied to a possible move back to Houston.
- His own decision about Montana remains unknown.
- His relationship with Jenny is suggestive but unresolved.
Was Beau’s ending supposed to set up season 4?
Yes. The finale was written while the series was still awaiting ABC’s renewal decision, so it resolves the season’s central crime story without closing every character arc.
Ackles said after the finale that Beau’s next chapter would depend on whether ABC ordered a fourth season. He pointed to possible stories involving Beau’s history in Houston, his former partner, his marriage, and his relationship with Jenny. Those comments describe possible directions rather than a fixed plan for the character.
Showrunner Elwood Reid also said the creative team had more stories planned for the characters. The ending therefore worked as an open-ended season finale when it first aired. Once ABC canceled the show, however, those open threads became the permanent endpoint for Beau.

How the cancellation changes the meaning of the finale
“That Old Feeling” was not originally structured as a complete goodbye to Beau, Jenny, Cassie, or the wider Big Sky ensemble. The kidnapping and serial-killer storyline receives a resolution, while Beau’s romantic and family decisions are held back for a possible continuation.
That distinction matters. The episode does not reveal that Beau chooses Jenny, permanently leaves Montana, or returns to Houston. It simply ends before he makes that decision. ABC’s later cancellation transformed that intentional uncertainty into the character’s final on-screen fate.
So the most accurate description is not that Big Sky gave Beau a tragic ending or that he was written out. His story ends with survival, a successful rescue, and an unresolved choice about where—and with whom—he will build his next life.
What was season 3 about?
ABC branded the third season Big Sky: Deadly Trails. The story returned Cassie and Jenny to a Montana investigation involving Sunny Barnes’s backcountry excursion, with Beau Arlen joining the central group of characters.

The season’s mystery combines a missing-person investigation with the darker secrets surrounding Sunny’s operation. Beau’s personal storyline is closely connected to the case because Emily becomes endangered, turning the investigation into a direct family emergency for him.
The season premiered as part of ABC’s 2022–2023 schedule and returned from its winter break on Wednesday, January 4, 2023, at 10 p.m. Eastern/Pacific. Its finale followed two weeks later on January 18.
Is Big Sky based on a book?
Big Sky began as a television adaptation of C. J. Box’s Cassie Dewell-related crime novels. ABC’s original series premise centered on private detectives Cassie Dewell and Cody Hoyt, together with Jenny Hoyt, as they searched for kidnapped sisters along a remote Montana highway.
For viewers interested in the source material, The Highway by C. J. Box is the natural place to begin. Macmillan identifies the novel as the inspiration for the ABC series and lists editions including an audiobook. The television show expands and changes the material across its three-season run, though, so the novel should not be treated as an explanation of Beau Arlen’s television fate. Beau’s unresolved ending belongs to the TV series.

Because the show was canceled after season 3, there is no fourth season that continues Beau’s story. Any listing or article suggesting that Ackles’s character returns for a completed season 4 is not describing an aired continuation of the ABC series.
